It is probably easier to have 1 thread for the draft today and tomorrow than to bounce around amongst a few. A one-stop spot for rumors, angst and rants.

Wonder who the "out of left field" person might be. Think Weber is on the block?

Not sure if it qualifies as out of left field, but a Minny D? There hasn't been too much smoke there, it's mostly been all Shattenkirk.

How much do the expansion draft rules affect decision making tonight? Will teams start to lock in their 7 + 3 via trades, and target young prospects under the protection limit?

My feeling is you won't see much of that tonight, outside of someone like Bishop/Fleury moving from an organization that's identified the goalie they want to keep. Of course, from the Bruins' side that raises the question of Rask v Subban and whether you move Subban for value now, or you keep both and (if you don't find a trade partner) expose Rask to potentially get out of that contract.

The wrinkle I haven't seen answered definitively anywhere is whether Las Vegas will be able to select impending UFAs. The picks will be in on June 20, so the players will still technically be under contract to their existing franchises - the closest explanation I can see is here:

* The Las Vegas franchise must select a minimum of 20 players who are under contract for the 2017-18 season.

* The Las Vegas franchise must select players with an aggregate Expansion Draft value that is between 60-100% of the prior season’s upper limit for the salary cap.
The '16-'17 salaries for those players will still be in effect when they are drafted and that calculation is made, and that Las Vegas will be free to draft impending RFAs. I have to imagine they would be allowed to pick impending UFAs if those players are not protected.

Regardless, I feel like the main change you'll see over the course of the year (and maybe tonight included) is players with 1 year remaining on their current contract will increase in value on the trade market over the course of this year. Instead of the opportunity cost of an unprotected player being 1-2 more years of production, it will be the foregone 5-6th round pick for their UFA rights.

It's Haggs so consider the source.

A source with knowledge of the situation told CSNNE.com on Friday morning that “there’s a very good chance [Shattenkirk] is a Bruin, Ranger or Flyer” when next season opens in October.

Sources with knowledge of the situation were skeptical that the 29th overall pick in the first round would be enough, along with a young forward, to get the deal done with St. Louis for Shattenkirk. But Sweeney would also be wise to hold to that stance and fight the temptation to deal away a draft pick that will get the Bruins a good, young player ready to contribute within a couple of years.

That would hurt. I struggle to give up pick 14 in a 15 player deep draft for 1 year of a guy and the chance to pay him top of market value. I'm not saying I'd walk away, I'm just saying it would hurt.

Yep, I would. It is an overapy, but you have to pay through the teeth to get a legitimate top pairing defenseman. Look at what Yandle just got, and he is a debatable top pairing guy. Shattenkirk is young enough that I wouldn't worry too much about the back end of a 6/7 year deal. His numbers mostly look good, though he did take a nose dive with ES scoring this past season. That would be my one concern. 0.51 p/60 this past year, when he has typically been closer, or above 1 p/60 (his previous low was 0.81). Nothing drastic happened to his individual shooting percentage, but that is something worth a closer look to see if there was a dip in play or some bad luck involved.

So, the three main defensemen on the block are Subban, Shattenkirk and Fowler. Obviously Subban isn't happening, but the other two are interesting.

I would love to see them add either one, but I agree that I would try to do it without giving up the 14th pick.

I also have absolutely no faith in Sweeney doing anything, so I am perfectly content with him not trading anything and just taking the picks. Seems like he can cause less damage that way.

God, what an awful feeling. I'm always mr sunshine about trusting executives, but I'm with you. Hope to proven wrong.

Of those two, I think Shattenkirk is far superior, both in terms of fit and just the talent level. Fowler would be great but he's really a middle pair left shot D. We would have to play either him or Krug on the bottom pair and it would probably ensure that we get to keep both Kevan Miller and Adam McQuaid to play the right side. If I could get both and move Seidenberg, I'd be ok with both of the plugs and they would have a really interesting D.

Chara-Shattenkirk
Fowler-Miller
Krug - Mcquaid.

I don't know how we feel about Dom around here, but he is saying on HFBoards that JFJ is talking to Shattenkirk's camp as we speak.

edit- and so are two other teams.

FWIW, Blues guy re-tweeted by Bob says the Oilers are offering RNH for Shattenkirk. Blues want Hall or Eberle.

Talk on NHL Network of Hanzal being available... I would give a lot for a player like that. He's pretty much what people hoped Patrik Berglund would be.

I know Sweeney hasn't inspired much confidence, but we really dodged a bullet with Benning leaving before Chiarelli got fired.

Lars Eller for a 2nd in '17 and '18 to Washington

Chicago trades Shaw to Montreal for #39 and #45... holy hell did Chicago bend Montreal over.

Thinking more on the Eller/Shaw/Futures swap, I can see the appeal for Montreal. They may not have had players they valued as mid-high 2nd that would be available at 39 & 45 this year, and they get reinforcements there in '17 and '18.

Meanwhile, they trade a guy in Eller who ran hot and cold, and obviously has more skill and raw value than Andrew Shaw - but between Shaw, Gallagher, Byron, Flynn, etc. they get a level of grit they haven't had since the Bégin/Smolinski/Kostopolous line in '07-'08.
