#DFG: Canceling the Noise

Is there any level of suspension that you would advise Tom to accept?

When even the Daily News is sick of it, you know this thing has run its course. GJGE, NFL owners (because we all know who's behind this).

Hadn't seen this discussed here yet - apologies if this belongs in the other thread.. I figured since it's not directly relating to the case and its outcome I'd put it here.

http://www.patspulpit.com/2016/5/29/11782682/deflategate-robert-kraft-puts-money-where-his-mouth-is-patriots-potentially-on-hook-for-bill

From the article:
In other words, if a franchise joins a lawsuit against the league in any capacity, then said franchise is on the hook for the financial fallout if the NFL wins the case- and Goodell will be responsible for determining the final bill.
Edit - fixed link

From the article:
The link didn't work when I tried to click on it, but I wonder what the NFL's response would be if Kraft told Goodell to F**K off when/if Goodell tried to impose the financial penalty. Given the lack of process that owners have with the league, I assume Goodell would then impose the loss of a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th round pick in successive drafts, in which instance, Kraft would gladly pay the fine.

Florio is bored; don't chase the rabbit.

We are talking about an amicus brief, which the NFL cannot respond to unless and until the Second Circuit orders a response.

That response, if it comes, will devote more than 90% of its effort directed to what Ted Olson said, not what the Pats said.

You're not on the hook for the entire tab when you enter the game as a pinch runner in the 9th inning.

Now that you mention Florio, he took on Steven A who took on NFLPA and DeMaurice Smith re Deflategate, Florio is preaching to choir on SoSh in this piece today:
"
Tom Brady and Deflategate, from my understanding, has cost the Players Association millions,” Stephen A. declared. “I have a problem with that. I have a problem with the issue of deflated footballs regressing to a point where it’s taking millions of dollars out of the coffers of players. That’s my issue.”

If that’s his issue, Stephen A. should take it up with the league office. They’re the ones who pulled the pin on the still-exploding grenade by ignoring science, presuming guilt, and engineering the evidence in a way to confirm a predetermined outcome."

Intangibles.

But seriously, benighted have been set up the way you suggested and then adjusted when the ball started coming in across his body. It's a difficult camera angle. Would be interesting to watch the video again and see how he played it.

Isn't Jeter taking that throw in a really dumb way?
Why not wait over the bag and let the ball travel to you and only drop the glove after catching it rather than forcing yourself to have to make a much bigger motion to apply a tag?
The question would be which would travel faster, the ball heading to the glove (per your suggestion), or his glove moving from the catch-point to the tag-area (Jeter's apparent plan). The ball is probably moving faster than his glove could?

It's absolutely the ball. You also have to account for human reaction time, making sure the glove is in the ball, and the fact that the glove at the end of an arm isn't going in a straight line. But again, you have to work with the throw you get. Depth is not great in this pic.

Edit: Since I was curious... As I suspected, the picture angle is misleading. It wasn't a great throw, which necessitated a cross body catch to have any chance. If he catches it as Rough suggests, his glove is on the wrong side of the bag and Roberts is safe no matter what.

of course, ideally, his glove could take a more direct path from the intercept-point toward the tag, but that's probably not enough to compensate for the slower speed.

I don't know the relative speeds. I know that the relative speeds + the factors I listed make the sweep method slower. There is a reason that players always let the ball come to them vs. sweep when at all possible. at least, I'm reasonably certain of this from my ball playing days. Also, a pro catcher is throwing the ball across a diamond damn fast. It looks slower on TV.

Haven't found a good timetable out there, and haven't seen it in this thread.

What are reasonable timeframes for the next couple of steps in this saga?

There is no telling. The fork in the road is whether the Court asks for a response or simply rejects the petition. It is unlikely to grant the petition without a response.

My guess is that we'll hear something in a couple of weeks, but that's a WAG.

With JJ Watt's new logo, ESPN thought it would be funny to come up with some other personalized logos for players. Here's Brady's.

Sorry it's so big. Couldn't figure out how to downsize it.

It's a little rich that ESPN who played a huge part in the stupidity that is deflate-gate continues to try to imply that the balls were deflated or that Brady was involved. Out of the 30 player logos they created, only one of the logos makes fun of the player being represented.

For comparison, none of the Von Miller logos show a urine specimen collector.

I'm not one to take offense at every reference to ball deflation, but there is no cause to defend ESPN.

Your post was fine, and inspired a salient point from pappymojo. The intervening post was the one completely devoid of value.

Sure, if you want to ignore that the main criticism of ESPN is relaying partial accounts of the complete record. Otherwise its just hypocritical to post an incomplete record. I'm in no way defending ESPN (though I laughed at the logo and find nothing wrong with it, like it or lump it, it's attached to him now and I feel some people need to chill the f out and accept reality) but I'm saying if we are going to criticize them, let's live up to the same standards. Is that a lot to ask?

Maybe if this were the ESPN thread in the media forum, but this is the DFG thread. That was the only logo that applied here, and pappymojo's point was right on the money. The Patriots were unfairly persecuted in this farce, so their fans have every right to scream that from the rooftops until the rest of the country understands what really happened. The pendulum has already started to swing the other way, so now is not the time for Pats fans to stoically accept the NFL's version of the "truth".

Sorry for continuing the off-topicalness nature, but if you don't catch the ball in front of the runner, you risk the ball hitting or being knocked out by the runner and traveling into left field and allowing the runner to advance. So you reduce the risk but also reduce the time by a few fractions of a second .

Where are these talks of settlement coming from? The NFL would be foolish to entertain that at this point. They stood resolute during much more uncertain times that they face now.

It's like people don't understand the basic principles of negotiation.

I don't think it's anything more than some reporter asking Goodell if anything is happening with Brady/settlement in light of the Motion for En Banc Rehearing, and Goodell repeating his "integrity of the game/rules apply to all" mantra.

That some reporter would ask him if anything is cooking regarding a settlement is unremarkable in my view. It beats asking whether he's going to get a reversal of his lobotomy.

You might be right in this case, but we've seen this kind of inside information and speculation reported on in the past, so obviously some people in the media don't get it.

Not that it matters outside of my house, but the whole idea that RG has painted TB as someone who did not respect the "integrity" of the game and cheated without any real evidence is sickening. TB epitomizes the type of player and person any parent would want their kids to be.

TB looks down at RG's integrity from a million miles up. RG sold his soul years ago, as did Mort and all of ESPN for the Benjamins.

fake edit: I have been at a funeral and collation all day for a dear friend, a Pat's fan and yes, I have been drinking since 10 am. I am to the core pissed... 500 plus days later and still RG is tossing the word integrity around like he is the last guardian of the righteous. The Shield is pretty dented from the inside.

If I am a parent/spouse of a NFL player or about to become one, I would seriously be concerned that the NFL is covering up many medical issues that football players are subjected to and the NFL covers up, simply because of the fact the NFL dismisses the Ideal Law as the real reason for deflation to the balls that day. Even though there is no clear starting pressure # that could serve as a baseline of how much actual PSI was down in each ball since they were measured pre game, the NFL is doggedly hanging on to the premise that TB was cheating. If they will deny something as simple and defined as that, what issues would they dismiss that are not yet clearly defined because of lack of study.

End of rant and going to bed

I thought that the NFL's continued and obnoxious references to the 'integrity of the game' were always about the CBA. Wasn't the term pulled from the CBA as a undefined catch-all? Godell is trying to use this section of the CBA to justify his consolidation of power to rule on all things including times when Godell wants to award a larger punishment than what was previously agreed to in the CBA?

That's not right.

Goodell has consistently invoked the "integrity of the game" as his rationale for going after Tom. Even the biggest stars are not immune when the integrity of the game is at issue, he has said repeatedly told us in hushed tones.

Alcohol and grief aided or not, norm from cheers had it right in his rant above. That Goodell uses those words in the face of all of his various and extensive bullshit over the last several years is a twisted, pathetic joke.
