It seems like it might be time for Clay to come on down and meet his maker.

Edit: Of course trying to trade him for pennies on the dollar prior to the waiver option is a variation on that choice.

I think there's very little chance Buchholz would accept an outright assignment to the minors. He may go what we could call the Joe Kelly route where he's DLed with a minor injury and does a rehab assignment, but if they DFA him, and he somehow gets through waivers, he's refusing the assignment and forcing them to release him (and pay his full contract).
