So you sign a large contract in the off season, what do you do with some of your new found wealth?

Jason Heyward was quick to share the wealth after he signed an eight-year, $184 million contract with the Chicago Cubs in December. According to Bleacher Report, one of Heyward's first moves after locking up the new deal was to pay for teammate David Ross to get a hotel suite big enough for Ross's whole family for every road trip of Ross's final MLB season.

Ross and Heyward were teammates for three years back in 2010-2012 when both played for the Atlanta Braves. Heyward said Ross served as a mentor to him back then, so the hotel suite idea was a big league version of a thank you note for all Ross had done for Heyward during Heyward's early years in the MLB. Via Bleacher Report:

"I know how special it is to have teammates like he was my first three years in Atlanta. You don't take it for granted," Heyward told Bleacher Report. "I wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart, as a teammate and as a friend, for what he's done for me."

Shane Victorino released from Cubs'm AAA team. He wasn't hitting well in limited action, but could find a home -- at least on the short term -- as Royals (Gordon) and Rangers (Choo) have been hit with outfield injuries

Miami (oh, Miami!)
It'd be great if there was some sort of life chart of ex-Sox players. I clicked through a few old favs to see what they've been up to. Jose Iglesias is sporting a .523 OPS for the Tigers. Crawford is at .493 for LA, and Gonzalez is at .746. Meanwhile the Cubs have Ross at .801, Rizzo at .884, and are getting impressive performances out of Lackey and Lester (but nothing close to Steven Wright's).

Ex-Red Sox pitcher Bill 'Spaceman' Lee running for Vermont governor

Bill "Spaceman" Lee tells WCAX-TV that voters will "need umbrellas" if he's elected, because "it's going to be raining dollars," referring to money trickling down from the wealthy.

Lee pitched for the Boston Red Sox from 1969 to 1978. He was inducted into the team's Hall of Fame in 2008.

Lee says he's a "pragmatic, conservative, forward thinker." He supports legalizing marijuana, a single-payer health care system and paid family leave.

Manuel Margot is pretty much doing what Manuel Margot does. .280/.345/.406 in AAA.
Logan Allen 33ip, 32k/9bb 0hra 1.91era 1.15 whip in Full A
Javier Guerra isn't doing so well in Hi A, .188/.245/.300 with 13bb and 61 strike outs in 170 ab. He's striking in out in like 1/3 of his PA.
Carlos Asuaje .333/.385/.503 in 165 at bats. Of course it's the PCL, so that goes for Margot as well.

Trade doesn't look so bad if Guerra really was a helium guy and the power wasn't real.

Dodgers DFA Carl Crawford, with another year and roughly $30M left on his deal.

I'm not gonna say this guy was the cause of the end of the Theo/Tito golden age, but he was easily the biggest mistake Theo ever made (quibbles over who was really the one pushing for CC and that ridiculous contract aside), and it was a miracle that they were able to get out from under the bulk of that deal so quickly after it went predictably south.

This is a significant datum in looking at the actual results from the Punto Trade. Which looks sweeter and sweeter.

I'm sure someone's got a spreadsheet out there but on my digital napkin:

Gonzo - 2322 PA, 126 OPS+, 12 Bref WAR, $85m paid, $44m for the next 2 seasons.
Beckett - 35 starts, 106 ERA+, 2 WAR, $47m paid.
Crawford - 1119 PA, 103 OPS+, 2.8 WAR, $62m paid, $42m owed for the next 2 seasons.
Punto - 378 PA, 88 OPS+, 2.5 WAR, $3m.
$10m cash.

That's roughly $229m to date for 19 WAR. Ironically, without Punto, it looks far worse.

None of the players the Dodgers gave up provided any significant WAR during their control years (Loney did post FA). Most were slightly negative. We did get a season out of Miley (2.5 WAR) from Webster/De La Rosa, and Sands/DeJesus were pieces in the Brock Holt/Hanrahan deal. Holt's at 4 WAR and is a FA in 2020. Call it something like +4 WAR worth of control coming out of the deal to date? I mean this stuff eventually attenuates as years of control pass, but the point is that LA gave away prospect value in addition to taking on the contracts. Maybe the Sox were snakebit on some of those trades, but the value is still there.

Although it's not precise, one could view that as something like net 15 WAR for the Dodgers to date.

At $6-7m per win, you'd be expecting something like 33-38 WAR?

If Gonzo does not decline end ends up putting up 12 more WAR, it ends up being $273 for 31 WAR. (Or net 22 WAR if Holt continues as is). Expected 40-45 WAR.

So unless we're talking intangibles (3 post seasons for LA/marketing) if the 2 WAR performances from everyone else cancel out, one could simply this in a way, and say from the Dodger's perspective this ended up being; Dodgers pay $273m for 6 years for Gonzo's performance.

I love Gonzo, but that's rough.

What the hell happened to CC? Was he juicing or something down in Tampa? Did he skills just erode that quickly?
FWIW, Eduardo Perez said on Baseball Tonight that all of Crawford's game was in his legs, and when he had leg injuries and his legs went, he had no game -- and he knew it.

Former Red Sox among those defrauded by a "devout Christian" financial advisor:
http://www.marketwatch.com/story/three-pro-athletes-defrauded-out-of-30-million-by-their-investment-adviser-2016-06-21/print
According to The Wall Street Journal, Denver Broncos quarterback Mark Sanchez, San Francisco Giant pitcher Peavy and former Houston Astros pitcher Roy Oswalt described in court filings how they met Narayan and “came to trust him as he described his devout Christian faith and charitable work over the years.” Also according to The WSJ, Sanchez and Oswalt said Narayan invested $7 million of their money in Ticket Reserve, while Peavy said Narayan took at least $10 million — all without their consent.

Brewers call up WMB, just after we were speaking of him yesterday.
Counsel says he'll primarily come off the bench, with an occasional start.
He had a July 1 out clause in his contract, meaning he could have become a free agent had the Brewers not agreed to call him up. His recent hot streak made the choice easier.
