Depending on what he said and the message delivered, I don't think that's necessarily a bad call. A lot can be learned for young guys when they see a former star talking about the mistakes he made and how his career was over too soon because of them. Probably a lot more effective coming from Rice (provided he was genuine and that was his message) than listening to some nobody from the office.
He probably told them that that Cris Carter's advice to rookies last year ("Get yourself a fall guy") was insufficient. They also have to disable any cameras.
With Vollmer's injury history and him on the last year of his contract, I'd consider moving Vollmer to the 3rd tackle. Monroe would be owed 3 years and $20 million from the Patriots. I'd have to be comfortable with his injury history which is an issue. But, if you're looking to re-sign Vollmer and it's going to be more than what Vollmer wants I'd consider trading for Monroe.

You could also easily cut Marcus Cannon and save over $3 million while opening up a spot on the OL depth chart.
Yeah, but then you still have to bench someone (or kick someone to G).
They could use a better tackle than Cannon as the third guy, but all these guys are getting paid too much not to start and I'm not sure Monroe is better than Solder or Vollmer. And Monroe is 29 and coming off a year where he was hurt, so he's probably not a long-term solution either.
Why is Monroe taking a backup job and backup money at age 29?
The much better question to ask - instead of "do the Patriots have interest?" - is "does the player have interest?"
In this case, I'm guessing that Monroe has no interest in a backup role for backup money. He might be interested in starting at left tackle for starting left tackle money. Both San Diego and Seattle could slot him into that role/salary - the Giants can pay him, but Ereck Flowers complicates their ability to give Monroe the LT job.
Ozzie Newsome is a brilliant GM and was an incredibly talented player. I've liked him since the 1980s. But the last few years, his off-field track record makes it REALLY hard for me to like "him".
If they cut Monroe for his personal opinion on weed - when Monroe has NOT (to my knowledge) failed a test - then this is another case of the Ravens having the wrong fucking priorities.
Article is hilarious. Ravens can save over $4M in cap money this year; Monroe missed 15 games in the last two years; their just-drafted, stud left tackle hasn't practised Stanley anywhere but LT - and all of a sudden because the Ravens didn't cut him on June 2 like everyone thought they are trying to dump him for views that he has been expressing for months? Yeah right.
Who knows why the Ravens waited 13 days to cut him? Maybe they were trying to work out a trade. Maybe they wanted to see Stanley in one more session of OTAs. Maybe Ozzie was on vacation until yesterday. No matter what, everyone knew that Monroe was probably going to be a cap casualty for football reasons. Not ideological ones.

The best part is he says they can just have joint practices, which the Ravens didn't even do this year. Can he ever shut up?
Granted, he does complain and whine a lot; that said, on this one I agree with him.
Preseason games are a complete and utter joke, they are a huge accident/season killer waiting to happen.
I remember one year in the final preseason game, the Patriots lost Veris, Lippett and Tippett to season ending injuries and speaking of ending, that ended the season right then and there for the Patriots.
College football doesn't have preseason games, don't understand why the pros do.
Oh wait; just another cash grab for the billionaire owners, forcing season ticket holders to buy tickets for these games.
As Harbaugh said, they used to play 6 of these, then they cut it to 4, but naturally, they expanded the season from 14 to 16 games in the process. Guaranteed at some point they'll cut them to 2, but expand the season again to 18 games.
They either need to expand rosters or shitcan these preseason games altogether.
Tom Brady got hurt in the first quarter of the first game of 2008. Should the NFL stop playing the first quarter because of it? A player can get hurt anytime, including at practice. If Harbaugh was so worried about the injury bogeyman, he should have sat all his best players. He didn't, obviously, because he wants to give them some work to get the ready for the season, which is the point of these games.
Once the season starts, all bets are off, whatever happens happens.
And yes, a player can get hurt in practice too; ie, anytime, anywhere.
Or a player can slip on a banana peel at home and get hurt too.

When it comes to preseason games, it's a variable that can be somewhat controlled through proactive thinking by the league.
But it's the NFL, so there is such thing as proactive anything when it comes to them.
You get a 90 man roster for most of preseason and a 75 man roster for the end of it. You can literally not play any of your starters if you don't want to. Gronk hasn't played since 2012. Tough shit for Harbaugh. If Brady got hurt on Friday night we wouldn't be bitching about preseason, we'd more likely be bitching that he was out there at all (and of course fuck Goodell)
I am reasonably sure that college football teams play scrimmages, either intra-squad or against other teams.
Injuries are just as likely to happen in any game situation whether it be in a practice, scrimmage, pre-season game or regular game. I can speak directly to the high school level, where each of the last 5 seasons the team that I coach has lost a player for the season due to an injury during early season practice. It happens.
