Game Four, May 6, 2011
BOSTON 5 Philly 1

For the second year in a row the Bruins entered Game 4 up 3-0 on Philadelphia. We won't talk about 2010.
The Bruins power play scored their first of the playoffs on a meaningless 5 on 3 late in game 3. At 12:02 Milan Lucic took a feed from Nathan Horton and scored a much more meaningful one to put the Bruins up one after one.
Kris Versteeg brought the visitors even at 13:22 of the second and the teams went to the locker room tied at 1.
Just 2:42 into the 3rd a Johnny Boychuk slap shot off a face off found its way past Bobrovsky and gave the Bruins back the lead. Then at 15:03 a nifty feed from Horton sent Lucic in alone and he gave the Bruins an insurance goal. Empty netters by Marchand (18:04) and Paille (19:35) gave the Bruins their second 5-1 win in a row. And sent them to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Meanwhile in other news...

Hot running Tampa swept out top seed Washington in another in a line of early exits for Alexander Ovechkin. Tampa will face Boston in the Eastern Finals.

Out West...

Vancouver dispatched Nashville in 5. San Jose went up 3-0 on Detroit only to find themselves pushed to a game 7 before knocking out Detroit. The series featured 6 games decided by a single goal while game 6 was decided by 2 on the strength of an empty netter.

Game One, May 14, 2011
BOSTON 2 Tampa 5

Fresh off an emotional 7 game series against rival Montreal and another emotional revenge series against Philadelphia the Bruins came out in Game One of the Eastern Conference Finals ... and stunk up the joint. Goals by Sean Bergenheim, Brett Clark, and Teddy Purcell put the Lightning up 3 goals in 1:25 halfway through the first. A late goal by Tyler Seguin got the Bruins within 2 witha pretty crossover move but they got no closer. 3rd period goals by the bad Bergeron and Gagne (empty netter) put Tampa up 5-1 before late goal by Boychuk provided the final 5-2 score.
Frustrations boiled over late as Lucic and Horton took matching roughing/misconduct penalties at 19:23.

Game Two, May 17, 2011
BOSTON 6 Tampa 5

Things started poorly again for the home team as Adam Hall scored for Tampa just 13 seconds in. A Horton power play goal evened things halfway through the first but a St Louis goal off of Boychuk with 7 seconds left in the period sent the Lightning to the locker room with the lead.
In the second the Bruins offense, led by Tyler Seguin (2G, 2A), exploded with 5 goals of their own. But a Lecavalier PP goal kept the Lightning within striking distance going into the 3rd.
And strike they did with goals by Stamkos (3:47) and Moore (13:15) but Thomas held on for the last 7 minutes and the teams would head to Tampa with the series even at 1 apiece.

Game Three, May 19, 2016
Boston 2 TAMPA 0

The suddenly red hot Bruins offense continued its ways early in Tampa. Milan Lucic found a wide open David Krejci in front of the net who had time to make a cup of tea before sliding a backhander past Dwayne Roloson. The Tampa defense stiffened, however, and Roloson and Thomas traded saves for the next 50 minutes of play.
At 8:12 of the third Andrew Ference scored his second of the playoffs (first without a glove "malfunction") to put the Bruins up two. Thomas did the rest, making 31 saves en route to the shutout and a 2-1 Bruins series lead.

The Bruins came out flying again and goals by Bergeron (11:47), Ryder (16:34), and Bergeron again (17:58, SH) put the Bruins up 3 after one. But a funny thing happend on the way to a 3-1 series lead. The Bolts woke up.
Two goals by Purcell (6:55 and 7:58) and Bergenheim (10:53) tied it up going into the 3rd.
Gagne put the home team ahead at 6:54 and an empty netter by St Louis evened the series at 2 apiece.

Game Five, May 23, 2016
BOSTON 3 Tampa 1

Things started poorly for the home team as a pinching Ference stumbled, resulting in a 2 on 1 that Gagne netted to put Tampa up 1. Thomas held firm on the Lightning pressure, however, and kept the Bruins within 1 going into the locker room.
Momentum switched in the second as Horton (4:24) and Marchand (15:56) scored to put the Bruins up 1 going into the third.
Once again the Bruins relied on Tim Thomas and once again he made a lead hold up against relentless Lightning pressure (including a pretty good ad for Reebok sticks). Finally an empty netter by Rich Peverley (19:47) put the Bruins on the brink of the Stanley Cup Finals.

Game Six, May 25, 2011
TAMPA 5 Boston 4

The Bruins headed to Tampa Bay looking to clinch a trip to the Stanley Cup finals. The Lightning were not ready to go away just yet.
Teddy Purcell scored just 36 seconds in on the first shot of the game and it looked like it would be a long night for the visitors. But goals by Lucic (7:09) and Krejci (16:30) put the Bruins ahead going into the first intermission.
From there penalties were the story of the game. St Louis (7:55) and Purcell (13:35) both scored on the power play in the second and Stamkos added a third just 34 seconds into the third. Krejci brought the Bruins back within one with a power play goal of his own at 9:46 but St Louis killed any momentum by scoring just 29 seconds later. Krejci completed the hat trick at 13:28 to bring the Bruins within one again but the Roloson and the Tampa defense were able to hang on, sending the series back to Boston for a decisive Game 7.

Game Seven, May 27, 2016
BOSTON 1 Tampa 0

Game 7 started with a frenetic pace with no whistles for the first 4 minutes and plenty of chances both ways. Nathan Horton only played 4 minutes as a collusion with Nate Thompson sent him to the locker room but was able to return for the second. The teams continued to trade chances but both goalies held firm and the first ended with a 0-0 tie.
5 minutes into the second Steven Stamkos had his nose "shattered" by a deflected shot from Johnny Boychuk that knocked his shield back into his face. He would return later with a full cage and plenty of dried blood. More probing continued in the second but again both goalies held firm, sending the game to the third still tied at 0.
The pace continued in the third with both teams having chances but both goalies standing tall. Then with 7:46 left the period the Bruins were called for offsides, setting up a draw just outside the Tampa zone. Krejci won the draw back to Ference who circled back to his own defensive end to set up the rush. Crossing over the blue line he fed a streaking Krejci through center ice, beating the 1-3-1 trap with one quick move. As Krejci crossed the offensive blue line he headed to the left faceoff dot, criss-crossing with Nathan Horton who drove the net. Krejci fed a pass through 2 defenders and just out of the reach of Roloson's left leg right to Horton who calmly directed the puck into the empty net. From there Tim Thomas and the Bruins defense took control, including an impressive last 2 minutes in which the Lightning were unable to attempt a shot on goal. Nathan Horton's game winner was his second Game 7 game winner of the playoffs. And the Bruins were headed to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1990.
Of note, no penalties were called in a playoff game for the first time in over 20 years.

Agreed. Just the brilliance of Ference's pass to get it going and Krejci's great feed to Horton. Was watching the game in the other room from my family and they wondered what the fuss was all about as I screamed and raced around the room. Rewound it about 5 times. I can still see it and it brings a smile to my face every time I think if it.

This is wholly subjective because of how much it meant to the franchise, but I don't think anything has topped Game 6 in 2008 yet. That's not to say this Bruins era peaked at what was effectively its origin, because it obviously didn't, but as a single game that still stands alone in my mind.

The Lightning Game 7 though, as far as a sharply played game that built tension the entire time until Horton finally broke through, was one of a kind. Unreal hockey and I forgot how good Roloson was. God, this ride was so much fun (when you weren't on the brink of cardiac arrest).

Meanwhile out West...

The Canucks and Sharks met for the first time in the playoffs with a trip to the Finals on the line. After winning both home games Vancouver split on the road to return home up 3-1. San Jose looked ready to force a game 6 until a controversial icing call led to a goal by Ryan Kesler with 13 seconds left to force overtime. At 10:18 of the second overtime Kevin Bieksa knocked in a rebound to send the Canucks to the Finals for the first time since 1994.
Boston and Vancouver met once during the regular season -- a 3-1 Bruin win.

Game 1, June 1, 2011
VANCOUVER 1 Boston 0

Tim Thomas and Roberto Luongo were both nominated for the Vezina for the 2010-2011 season. Game 1 showed why.
12 power plays, including a 1:32 5 on 3 for the Bruins, went scoreless and Thomas and Luongo traded saves all game. Some early spice was introduced to the series when Alex Burrows bit Patrice Bergeron's finger. Burrows was called for a double minor but no supplementary discipline was handed out.
The hot goalkeeping continued through the third until with 19 seconds left Raffi Torres tucked a feed from Jannik Hansen past a sprawling Thomas to give the Canucks a 1-0 win and a 1-0 series lead.

Game 2, June 4, 2011
VANCOUVER 3 Boston 2 (OT)

Alexandre Burrows scored on a power play 12:12 into the first, farther frustrating Bruins fans who thought he should have been suspended after biting Patrice Bergeron in Game 1.
Milan Lucic and Mark Recchi (PP) scored 2:35 apart in the second to give the Bruins their first goals and lead of the series.
But a Daniel Sedin goal at 9:37 of the third sent the game to overtime.
Where, just 11 seconds in, Burrows faked a shot to draw Thomas out of position, circled behind the net, and tucked it in the open side. It was a save Roberto Luongo would have easily made. But it sent the Bruins back home licking their wounds and down in the series 2-0.

Dammit. It's been a great season, but Luongo's just too good these days. I wonder if the B's will ever score again.

Game 3, June 6, 2011
BOSTON 8 Vancouver 1

The simmering hatred between the Bruins and Canucks boiled over at 5:07 when Aaron Rome hit Nathan Horton high and late, knocking out Horton and earning a 5 minute major and game misconduct. He would later be suspended for 4 games, the first multi-game suspension in the history of the Finals, assuring he would miss the remainder of the series. The Bruins, however, were unable to capitalize on the 5 minute power play and the teams ended the period tied at 0.
After a reportedly spirited discussion in the locker room Andrew Ference started an offensive explosion for the Bruins just 11 seconds into the second. Mark Recchi (4:22, PP), Brad Marchand (11:30, SH) and David Krejci (15:47) followed and the Bruins had a commanding 4-0 lead after 2.
Daniel Paille added the second short-handed goal of the game at 11:38 of the third. Jannik Hansen paused the party and broke Thomas' shutout at 13:53 but the Bruins continued to pour it on as Recchi (17:39), Chris Kelly (18:06), and Michael Ryder (19:29, PP) provided the final 8-1 margin.
In addition to making 40 saves Tim Thomas added a hit against Henrik Sedin at 6:39 of the 3rd period. The game featured 143 total penalty minutes, the most in a Cup Final game since 1990.
Vancouver fans came to Boston seeking a coronation. Instead they got a series.

Game 4, June 8, 2016
BOSTON 4 Vancouver 0

The Bruins dominated the first half of the first period but Luongo was able to keep them off the board until David Krejci fed a streaking Rich Peverley at the offensive blue line. Peverley broke in alone and slipped a forehand 5 hole to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead at 11:59.
Ryder (11:11) and Marchand (13:29, 4 on 4) expanded the lead to 3 after 2 periods and then at 3:39 of the 3rd Milan Lucic banked a pass off of a net-crashing Peverley to give the Bruins a 4-0 lead and knock Luongo from the game.
Tim Thomas did the rest, making 38 saves to complete the shutout (his third of the playoffs) and even the series at 2 each.
Tempers flared again late in the game with 54 minutes of penalties (including 3 10 minute misconducts) called in the 3rd period alone.

I still think Marchand's submarine hit on Sedin was totally ok. If Sedin is going to be a punk by going for a late hit after the whistle, Marchand has every right as much as a punk in not taking the hit.

God, that Game 3 was fucking orgasmic. I may have kind of thought it was going to have a 1999-ALCS-Game-4 post-hoc vibe to it at the time (look at the f***ing nancy over here), but it was goddamn good.

Every time I watch those highlights it annoys me that they go on and on about Marchand and neglect to mention Sedin was going for a late hit after a whistle. Par for the course I suppose.

Also, I just renewed the 2010-11 page. Best $45 I spend every year.
I also grabbed Thomas [to go with Recchi (they made me edit out "fuckin' right!")] and gave this message:

It smells like high school sponsor(s) this page.
Smiling Joe always did love you

Time to look around and see who else is available :)

In fairness they do call out a couple pretty obvious Canuck dives and turtles at other times. And were pretty fast to back track once they saw what happened to make Thomas go all lumberjack on Burrows.

"It is a good thing that was Daniel Sedin going in there, because he wasn't going with any speed."

Eddie Olcyzk.

Every time I watch these highlights, I'm amazed at the amount of stupid shit Olcyzk said during that series. In game 4 there is the quote above regarding a charging Sedin going in at Marchand. Criticizing Marchand is fair in the heat of things, but that was a clear on charge. I'm not sure how could claim Sedin was going in slow. In game 3 he calls for a penalty on Thomas for checking a Sedin on grounds that skaters can't hit goalies, and then that Thomas wasn't trying to play the puck. There is no such rule against goalies checking skaters. As for Thomas not playing the puck, I was unaware that making a play on the puck was now a requirement for making a body check. The guy you hit must be playing the puck, not the checker. In this case, Sedin plays the puck towards Thomas and Timmy lays him out. None of Eddie's takes make any sense at all.

I look forward to "Gotta get him outta there!!" coming up in a few days.

Game 5, June 10, 2011
VANCOUVER 1 Boston 0

The 2 teams flew back west for a pivotal Game 5. Both goalies flashed the Vezina nominated status and a defensive struggle ensued. Thomas blinked first at 4:35 of the third as Maxime Lapierre corralled a wide shot by Kevin Bieksa and beat the Bruins goalie short side. Luongo saved all 31 shots he faced for his second 1-0 win of the Finals.
The Bruins would head home to more comfortable ice facing a must win Game 6 on June 13.

There used to be a video on YouTube of a comedian from B.C. who, while normally was a Sharks fan, wore a Bruins jersey on the streets of Vancouver the day of Game 7. To put it mildly, the Canucks and their fans are perfect for each other.

Reading about the existential angst (allegedly) suffered by many Canadians over whom to root for was pretty amusing.

Game 6, June 13, 2011
BOSTON 5 Vancouver 2

The Stanley Cup was in Boston as the Canucks looked to finish off the pesky Bruins and hoist the first Cup in franchise history.
The Bruins has other ideas, however, and 3 goals in a span of 3:04 (Marchand (5:31), Lucic (6:06), and Ference (8:35, PP)) knocked a bewildered Roberto Luongo out of the game. Michael Ryder continued the onslaught at 9:45 and the Bruins had a commanding 4-0 lead after 1.
After a scoreless 2nd Henrik Sedin gave the visitors a glimmer of hope on the PP just 22 seconds into the 3rd but Krejci gave the Bruins back the 4 goal cushion at 6:59 on a 5 on 3. A late goal by Lapierre (17:34) provided the final 5-2 score. Tempers flared again at 18:29 as Marchand, Lapierre, Sedin, and Thornton all earned misconducts and a delirious home crowd cheered the Bruins to the locker room and on to Game 7.
