It seems we might have 2-5 years of "We don't talk about players that are not on our team." potential regarding Cardona.

Maybe this can be a running joke for the next few years. Good way to cap off every press conference: "Regarding Joe Cardona, well, we ran out of time..."

It is plausible that they could work out a release from any active duty service if he agrees to pay back the entire tuition.  I know more than one West Pointer that have been able to get out of service by paying it all back.

I thought I had read that Belichick met with folks at Annapolis during the run-up to the draft. I strongly suspect BB felt, but cannot admit that he feels, quite certain (reassured by Navy officials?) that Cardona will be snapping for the Patriots THIS season.

From Reiss' latest mailbag:

A. Josh, my sense is that Cardona has a good chance to play because he was drafted. That is basically unprecedented. As I understand it, Bill Belichick had visited the Naval Academy before the draft and spoke with some folks there about the situation, and I think he came away from there with a feeling that Cardona had a good chance to play if he was drafted. Those situations can always turn, but if you were asking me my prediction right now, I think we see Cardona snapping for the Patriots this fall. I view that as a solid pick, right in line with Matthew Slater in 2008. Every team needs a snapper, Cardona was the only one deemed worthy of a draft pick this year, and by the fifth round you're picking players who might not even make your team. I think that was the right place to pick him and it's why I put him in the "middle-to-late-round" projection category before the draft.

The WSJ just published an article on Cardona.

http://www.wsj.com/articles/should-military-athletes-get-special-treatment-1431363885

Here's the key quote by a Navy spokeman:

“Along with his Annapolis classmates, Midshipman Cardona will serve on active duty after he graduates in May to fulfill his service obligation,” Naval Academy spokesman John Schofield said. “The Navy is currently looking at assignment locations that would allow him to both serve in the Navy and play in the NFL in his off time.”

I'm telling you, LAX coach US Naval Academy Prep.

A title has a different demand on a persons time then the actual job ....

Plus he would be coaching... Long Snapping....but only when the Special teams coach "really needs him".  His main function might correspond more to the off season when they are "recruiting" kids to the prep school.  Couldnt hurt to have "NFLer Joe Cardona" taking you out to dinner.

I guess the point is, as you know, there are 100 ways to check all the necessary blocks to make everyone happy.  it wouldnt be the first time a military assignment was "tweaked" for the convenience of all involved.

No idea how credible this is, but Joseph Greenspan can play for the MLS' Rapids after his graduation, and the article also contains this:

In a weird twist, Greenspan thinks his chances of playing this season were boosted by, of all people, Bill Belichick, the head coach of the NFL's New England Patriots. Last month the Patriots drafted Navy long-snapper Joe Cardona and the Navy has agreed to also allow him to delay his deployment until after the 2015 NFL season so he can play professional football.

“I think Joe’s situation definitely helped, what with football being a little more high-profile and it being the Patriots and all," Greenspan said. "Once they decided to let (Cardona) play and get that publicity it made it easier for them to decide to let me play.

Just weird no other reporter has picked up on that.

Pats are now cheating the military to gain a competitive advantage on the football field. Their transgressions seemingly have no limits. We Pats fans smile now, but we'll be none too pleased when ISIS is living in our backyards.

Take it for what it's worth but one of my former students is a long-snapper who is being highly recruited by colleges now and attends a long snapping camp every three months, where Cardona is one of the main figures. He has gotten to know Cardona well and calls him, "the best long snapper in America, period." This kid claims that Cardona will play for the Patriots this year because the Navy and BB already have worked out a deal.

How long before some people start claiming that the Patriots are putting America's national security at risk?

I'm only half kidding.

we already got our just punishment for winning another super bowl.  if we win again this year then they'll have to manufacture another excuse to take away more picks.  hurting national security makes about as much sense as maybe possibly deflating footballs by a tiny fraction of a PSI.

Based on all this, I expect to hear that Belichick is depriving America of Cardona's ability to snap torpedos through his legs at enemies.

Can you guys shut the fuck up? Not every thread needs an unfunny joke made about deflategate.

I'm trying really hard to not be a dick, but these are exactly the kind of throw-away posts that have littered every thread the last few months. In a span of 5 hours, there's three posts trying to make a thread about a navy long-snapper into deflategate jokes.

Cut the shit.

Reiss said in his chat today that 2015 shouldn't be an issue, but 2016 may be

What does that mean? That he'll be available for the 2015 season (because he will have a posting somewhere reasonably near Foxborough) but not for 2016?

Mike, I read one report that the Navy cleared Joe Cardona for 2015. Can you confirm this?
Mike 12:03 PM ET
Ron, my understanding is that Cardona is good to go for 2015. The 2016 season could be more of an issue, but that will be something to address down the road.

Per Reiss, Cardona signed and will get pretty familiar with the Mt. Hope Bridge.

"Cardona has been assigned to the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, Rhode Island. Because of that assignment, he has been a regular contributor in the Patriots' offseason program."

That seems like great news. It is an incredibly important position to have confidence in that only shows up as important when big mistakes are made. Having a quality LS is one less thing the coaching staff will need to worry about and focus on, and assuming that Cardona is the kind of quality individual that you would generally expect from Annapolis, will be a great addition to the locker room. Well done Coach Belichick.

Just an update from Reiss.  Sounds like the Pats remain optimistic but don't want to say it's a certainty Cardona will be cleared to play.

When the Patriots drafted long snapper Joe Cardona in the fifth round, there was some question as to his availability for this season based on him being in the Navy. I asked Belichick last week if he had any more certainty about Cardona, and he said, “Ultimately, that’s not really our decision, but the Navy has been very cooperative in terms of his responsibilities. He’s on duty, it’s not like he’s getting out of anything.” As I understand it, the Patriots are proceeding as if Cardona will be with them for 2015 because he has been assigned to Newport, Rhode Island’s Naval Academy Preparatory School. But there’s no guarantees beyond 2015.

Does that have any impact on his contract? Do the Pats lose the year of control or is it essentially stalled for a year, like if he retired?
Yeah, there's a Military Reserve list they can put him on. They've used it before (with Eric Kettani, I think?).

They brought in Christian Yount a couple weeks ago - he snapped for Tampa Bay and Cleveland in the past. I assume that was with an eye to Cardona being unavailable this year.

Love the deep cover move from the Krafts here, keeping the team named "Patriots" for years while stealing our military personnel right in front of us.
