How so? With limited cap space and a player he feels can be his starter, this all seems like Elway is trying to ensure the team has a starter not named Mark Sanchez. If Elway is able to get Kaep to restructure, everyone wins.

If all GM's do this every year, how is Elway entitled?
It's one thing to coerce a player currently on the roster to take a pay cut, particularly in the NFL where contracts aren't guaranteed anyway. It's another to try and coerce a player who isn't even on the roster to take a significant pay cut from a guaranteed contract to come to Denver and compete for the starting job. The Clady situation is another example. He is due $10 million this year, is coming off of multiple injuries, yet Denver is trying to trade him. The fact that they just signed Okung for essentially half that amount as a free agent (ie, no compensation involved) should speak to Clady's trade value, but Elway can be quite stubborn.

Perhaps a more appropriate term would be that Elway "overvalues" his franchise and the way it is perceived around the league. Clearly Denver is a winning franchise and well structured in many ways, but just because they took advantage of the Okung situation (no agent) doesn't mean a player like Kap should take $5 million less to come, or that another team should give up value for an overpaid, injured player.

No he's not taking a pay cut. When I say restructure, I mean he has to convert some of his base salary into bonuses and incentives to lower his cap hit.
I get what you're saying, but I was confused to your initial response because all reports are about him taking an actual pay cut, not doing a restructured deal. Other than Denver being a better team than San Fran, there is no reason why Kap should do that. Is competing for the starting job on a potential contender worth giving up at least $5 million guaranteed and likely more, given that Kap has a long term deal? I doubt it, but I guess we'll find out.

He doesn't really have a long term deal if i understand it correctly. His money is only guaranteed against injury and is on a year by year basis. Every year on 4/1 it guarantees just for that year and it actually goes down if he doesn't meet incentives. So he's guaranteed this year, but he could trade out more real actual guaranteed money over the next few to get his cap number down and reduce the risk that he just gets cut and gets none of it after next year.

Isn't this akin to the Randy Moss situation back in 2007 when he came to the Pats?

According to Wikipedia:
During the first day of the NFL Draft, the Patriots and Raiders discussed the trade several times before reaching an agreement. Bill Belichick spoke with Moss for the first time about the possibility of joining the Patriots at 2:30am Sunday morning.[40] Moss then boarded a plane and arrived in Boston later that morning on April 29 and was required to pass a team administered physical. Once he was cleared by Patriots officials, a trade was completed that sent Randy Moss to New England in exchange for a fourth-round selection in the 2007 NFL Draft. The draft pick had been acquired by the Patriots the previous day from the San Francisco 49ers, and the Raiders selected John Bowie.[37]

One of the conditions of the trade was that Randy Moss would have to restructure his contract for salary cap reasons.[37] Just hours before the Moss trade was completed, New England quarterback Tom Brady converted $5.28 million of his 2007 base salary into a signing bonus that was spread out over the remaining portion of his contract so that it could free up cap room.[citation needed] This enabled the Patriots to absorb Moss' incoming contract under the salary cap.[41][42] Moss had two years remaining on his current deal and was scheduled to earn $9.75 million in 2007 and $11.25 million in 2008. Once the Patriots had Moss on their roster, he quickly agreed to a new one-year contract to replace his old one. The new deal gave him a $500,000 signing bonus, a base salary of $2.5 million, and the ability to earn an additional $1.75 million in incentives.

I highly doubt Moss' money was guaranteed like Kaeps. I'm too busy to dig further but I'll try and find the details later.

From about 10 minutes of research, I don't believe ANY of Moss' contract for '07-'08 was guaranteed. Which means he had no leverage - unlike Kaepernick, who has guaranteed salary and thus all the leverage.

Please. Cut. Talib. I dare you.
I'm sure he'd get hurt on a different team, after magically only missing one game with injury while with Denver.

Of course, he's also 30 now so it's maybe not an awful idea to move on before he declines, especially if you could trade him for something.

No harm in trying, but Elway misread this one as I thought.

The fact that Denver wants San Fran to pay some of the contract is also unrealistic. This isn't baseball with guaranteed contracts, and given the price of QBs in this market, Kap's is far from an albatross. If San Fran wanted out of the contract, they could have done so before last week when it became guaranteed.

If I am in San Francisco then if I am paying any money for him to play for Denver then I'd want a higher pick than they agreed to trade in the first place.

If they hadn't matched the Miami offer for CJ Anderson they would have the $6M they need to close the gap with Kaep. I have to think it would be easier and cheaper to find above average RB play rather than league average QB play. They also still don't have enough cap room to sign anymore free agents or pay their draft picks, so, regardless of the outcome of the Kaepernick situation, another cut (Clady?) or restructure (Sanders?) is coming.

This might not be about salary cap implications alone to Elway. I think this is a situation very similar to the Osweiler scenario where Elway simply refuses to pay a qb what the market will bear if that number is more than he thinks they are worth. He just won a SuperBowl after beating a Hall of Famer in a contract battle, so who am I to question him?

Manziel the QB is a great fit for Kubiak. If I was a Broncos fan, I would probably pretend I didn't want to risk it, but deep down would be intrigued to see what he could do on the shortest of leashes. Given their roster construction, I think it's probably pretty low risk-high reward. If he acts up, he's gone immediately and should cost a few million bucks tops.

A list of people Johnny Manziel currently lives with.

It is definitely a weird statement to make unless you actually live in the same house as the guy, so knows what's going on in Manziel's head. There's also the possibility that TMZ is just full of shit.

Or maybe Manziel actually lives at Miller's house, just not with Von, because Klis then added:
Dancing with the Stars is housing Von Miller and all contestants. "Dancing" is not housing Johnny Football.
Stupid twitter reporting.

Manziel reportedly spotted in Mosul, Iraq, moving in with leaders of ISIS. More to come when Ben Volin comes back from his afternoon shit in the men's room.

Wouldn't that be a better place for him considering Muslims generally lay off the sauce? I mean if he doesn't turn into a terrorist. I'd rather have him there than Josh Gordon's.

I think the easy answer to why Johnny said he was living with Von is he was being drunk and stupid, per usual. The whole statement sounds alcohol fueled to me.

Now they're saying he's not actually living with Josh Gordon, but he probably is (or was), but he knows it's not a good idea for that to be public knowledge. I mean, Josh Gordon picked up Johnny Manziel after he and a driver were the perps in a hit-and-run on Sunset Blvd.

And now, Johnny's 2nd agent this year, Drew Rosenhaus, has issued a very public ultimatum to him.

looking at Denver sch i see 8-10 wins with the first 2 Weeks of the season must win games

this could a mid 2000's type of season for Denver where they start 6-2 finish 2-6

as after the first 2 weeks they have 5 winnable games in row then will need to spit @ oak @ no set as overall denver must win 9 of the first 13 games because they couild lose the last 3 very easyly

well it was the NFL wanted to do anything possible in not giving Brady Kraft ring 5
The Denver thread has been great and it's directly related to your insight and posts as a fan, for which I thank you.

But whenever you orbit the WWF-style conspiracy that "the NFL has a script they adhere to in pre-determining game outcomes" it detracts from that insight. [Unless these posts are meant to be humor or sarcasm, in which case I apologize].

on denver draft if lynch pans out its a A- if he does not its a C-

Lynch needs time hopefully a year but at least haif a season he does have bad footwork been in a shotgun off etc the goal here is for Lynch to be a souild starter by 2018

i do not like the 2nd round pick as he was overdrated Gotes espn says he is a M Jackson clone i will need to see it to beleave it

J Simmons will start by 2017 i like the upside

D Booker could be Off rookie of the year
Mcgrovn will start at RG for denver in time

and our last pick was a punter

so if everything goes well denver draft could have 4 starters + a rotionl DE

They're sort of stuck in a catch-22 here, though: if Booker gets the playing time to be Offensive Rookie of the Year, they're wasting a considerable amount of money on CJ Anderson and Hillman.

Elway seriously misplayed his hand when you consider they could have had Anderson for just the first round tender.

yes but after this year anderson cap nun goes down to 4.5 mil and hillman will be gone

if u look at 2017

this is what i see
QB Lynch
RB Booker Anderson
FB/TE Jankivoich/ V green
WR DT
WR 2 i think sanders will leave unless he sighs a 3 year deal for 33 mil or under
Folwer Draft pick maybe a FA Addison undraftfd FA laitmer last year of rook deal
TE Jeff H V Green maybe a undrafted fa like herty coble
LT Okung
LG Garica
C Pardris
RG mcgolven
RT Steveton or Draft pick steveton might be RG as well with TY Sambroing at RT

DE Wolfe Kenny A
NT ? kilgo or draft pick maybe phil taylor S Williams is a ? mark now
DE Gothis or crick

LOLB Miller
MLB Marshall is a ? mark so as of right now
T Davis Cnelson Draft pick or FA
ROLB Ray barnett
i assume ware will retire if he says for 2017 Barnett would look good at MLB
CB Harris and Roby are locks i think tabib will be on the roster in 2017 but it would not be awful if he was cut if it meant keeping sanders marshall and sy williams T Nxon with DP or low cost FA
FS Simmons or stewart
ss ward or simmons

K Mcmanas
P Dixon
KR/PR Addison or booker

Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib is expected to be released from a Dallas hospital Monday and make a full recovery after suffering a gunshot wound in his lower right leg Sunday.

But details remain murky on what happened early Sunday in Dallas, leaving two others injured.

“Everything was a blur and I was too intoxicated to remember what happened,” Talib reportedly told Dallas police, according to WFAA TV’s Rebecca Lopez.

According to WFAA, Talib told the police that he was at a park with a large group when he was shot around 3:40 a.m.

So i'm assuming he gets 4 games as Plaxico did? I'm sure Commissioner Goodell is familiar with past punishments and the CBA?
