The Bruins fall to the Devils 3-2, finishing the regular season 46-25-11. By virtue of winning the Northeast Division with 103 points they earn the 3rd seed behind other division winners Washington (107) and Philadelphia (106). This sets up a first round match-up with Montreal. The series is set to begin April 14.

I swear to god, if they lose this series I want Claude and Chia out on their asses. Let's see if Horton has a pulse

If they get down a couple of games in this series, it's over. This team has no ability to come back from being down.

Does anyone here have a Civic? If so, you should probably try to protect it in the upcoming weeks. Just a heads up.

And damn, Seidenberg has been great lately, and he could really help lead this team deep into the playoffs. He seems like the kind of player who could play at a high level until he's 45.

I got offered tickets to Game 5, but I'm already going to see the Revs that day. Probably won't matter, we'll choke and lose in 5 or some bullshit.

I'm totally going to blame the crap out of Chiarelli for the Kaberle trade if this postseason doesn't go anywhere. He was brought on to be a goal scorer, and he has one. Can't we get Kampfer more playing time?

Game One, April 14, 2011
Montreal 2 Boston 0

The Bruins playoff push got off to a rough start only 2:44 into the game as Scott Gomez stole a soft Tomas Kaberle clearing attempt and fed a wide open Brian Gionta who then beat goalie Tim Thomas. The teams battled through a scoreless second. At 16:42 of the 3rd history repeated itself as Gomez stole the puck from Milan Lucic and fed Gionta who beat Thomas from the right faceoff dot. Thomas got a piece of the puck but it trickled through him into the net to put the game out of reach. Carey Price made 31 saves to earn his first shutout of the playoffs.

Game Two, April 16, 2011
Montreal 3 Boston 1

Things went from bad to worse for the home team as this time it took only 42 seconds for the Habs to strike. James Wisniewski stole a Boychuk clearing pass and walked down the right wing side. Thomas was able to stop his shot but an uncovered Mike Cammalleri knocked in the rebound. 1:38 later, with Dennis Seidenberg in the box for interference, Cammalleri scored on a feed from Mathieu Darche and the Bruins were on the ropes. Patrice Bergeron got the Bruins within 1 midway through the 2nd, tipping in a nifty feed from Brad Marchand, but Yannick Weber knocked in a Lars Eller rebound to put the Habs back up two late in the period. Neither team scored in the 3rd and the 3-1 loss sent the Bruins to Montreal in a huge 2-0 hole.

Game Three, April 18, 2011
Boston 4 Montreal 2

This time it was the Bruins who struck first at 3:11. David Krejci buried a feed from Patrice Bergeron as a Too Many Men on the Ice penalty expired. Price kept the Habs in it through an early Bruins onslaught but at 14:38 Nathan Horton banked a shot off Price's back into the net.
The Bruins scored early again in the 2nd as Rich Peverley took a giveaway from Price and buried it into an empty net.
Montreal made it interesting as Kostitsyn scored at 7:03 of the second and Plekanec brought it to one at 4:08 of the 3rd but Thomas held firm and Chris Kelly sealed the win with an empty netter at 19:34.

Game Four, April 21, 2011
Boston 5 Montreal 4 (OT)

Montreal comes out strong early but Tim Thomas is stronger, stonewalling a Canadien attack looking to take a strangle hold on the series. Brent Sopel scores at 8:13 but it could have been much worse for the visiting Bruins.
Michael Ryder got the Bruins even early in the second but the Habs scored twice in 55 seconds to go up 3-1. Andrew Ference brought the Bruins within one at 9:59, a fact he explained to the home crowd in interesting fashion, and Bergeron evened it at 3 late in the period.
With Bergeron in the box for hooking PK Subban rifled a shot past Thomas to put the Habs back on top at 1:30 of the 3rd. A relentless attack by the Bruins was finally rewarded at 13:42 when Chris Kelly knocked in a loose puck. The teams traded chances but both goalies held ground and the series had its first OT game.
The drama ended early as Chris Kelly found Michael Ryder wide open in front of Carey Price. Ryder had time to settle the puck and cleanly beat a scrambling Price at 1:59, sending the series back to Boston even at 2.

Game Five, April 23, 2011
Boston 2, Montreal 1 (2OT)

Boston tried to become the first team to defend home ice and came out firing but Carey Prrice held off the early Bruin attack. Michael Ryder proved that he can do more than just score goals with a glove save of his own. The teams traded chances through two periods until Brad Marchand broke the ice at 4:33 of the third on a feed from Patrice Bergeron. The Bruins were unable to hold the lead however as Jeff Halpern evened it at 13:56 and the scene was set for another overtime.
Goaltending was the story for much of overtime. Price stopped Krejci from right in front. Chara's leg blocked an open net. Tim Thomas made a remarkable save on Gionta on a 2 on 1. And many others. Finally at 9:03 of the second overtime Milan Lucic fed Andrew Ference who walked down the left wing and ripped a shot through a David Krejci screen. Price made the initial stop but the rebound bounced to Nathan Horton who buried it into the empty net to give the Bruins a 3-2 series lead.

That back check by Ryder at the end of regulation...

Also watching these makes seeing Seidenberg's current state that much more painful, he was just an excellent skater

Five years later, and what I can't believe is how many of the same players there are on both teams.

Geez, do ya think one of the reasons both teams are so disappointing currently is the fact that most of each team is just 5 years older?

Game 6, April 26, 2011
Montreal 2 Boston 1

A too many men penalty followed by a Seidenberg slash 4 seconds later gave Montreal a chance to strike midway through the first period. And strike they did as Mike Cammalleri took a cross ice pass from PK Subban and fired it past Thomas to give the Habs a lead at 10:07.
The Bruins tied it just 48 seconds into the second as Seidenberg gathered in a Rich Peverley rebound and tucked it 5 hole from behind the net.
But a boarding major from Milan Lucic and a delay of game penalty from Patrice Bergeron gave Montreal their second 5 on 3 of the game and agan they cashed in, this time as Brian Gionta slammed home a loose rebound in the crease.
Boston had 3 power play chances of their own in the 2nd period but continued their woes with the man advantage and were unable to score.
Due to game 6 being delayed by a Lady Gaga concert at the Bell Centre and an edict from the NHL that the opening round be finished by April 27 Game 7 will be played on no rest tomorrow night in Boston.

Game 7, April 27, 2011
Boston 4 Montreal 3 (OT)

Bruins. Canadiens. Game 7. The first game 7 between the two since April 21, 2008 when an over-matched Bruins squad took the Habs to the brink before falling.
Johnny Boychuk settled the nerves of the home crowd at 3:31, firing a shot past Price from the point.
Mark Recchi made them wonder if for once it might be easy at 5:33, taking a feed from Ference and putting the Bruins up by 2.
But, typical Montreal, the Habs responded with a PP goal from Yannick Weber to pull with one at the end of one.
In the second the hapless Bruin power play went from bad to worse, giving up a short handed goal to Tomas Plekanic on a break away at 5:50 that evened the score.
Halfway through the 3rd period the caged Chris Kelly put the home team back on top after Roman Hamrlik dove trying to draw another penalty and it looked like the Bruins were poised to move on. But a late high-sticking penalty by Patrice Bergeron gave PK Subban a chance to even it up again at 18:03, sending Game 7 to overtime. Of course.
After a back and forth 5 minutes the Bruins lined up for an offensive zone draw at 5:23. A stalemate off the draw eventually led to the puck bouncing to PK Subban who wired it around the boads. A punching McQuaid stole the puck from Cammalleri and then stole it again from Subban, knocking it to Lucic just outside the right faceoff dot. Lucic found a wide open Horton who had dropped back to the blue line to cover for the pinching McQuaid. Horton glided left, clearing the pile in front of the net, and blasted a slap shot past a sprawling Price at 5:43. And "The Bruins! Knock off Montreal!"
The Bruins become the first team in NHL history to win a 7 game series without scoring a power play goal. They also become the first Bruins team to come back from down 0-2 to win a playoff series.
Up next: Philadelphia, the 2 seed.

I think I would have quit hockey if they had lost that game. I wanted to vomit the whole 65 minutes.

I forgot what a great play that was by McQuaid.

I'm pretty sure this game was the start of what led to my glorious divorce 4 years later. I spent the entire 3rd period alternating between on my knees feeling like I was going to puke, and curled up in the fetal position, and it might have been the night my wife decided I just wasn't the right person for her.

Best. Game. Ever.

Meanwhile in other news...

The top seeded Capitals dispatched the Rangers 4-1 in a series that was closer than it seemed with 2 games won in OT by the Caps.
Second seeded Philly was pushed to 7 games by plucky Buffalo on the strength of Ryan Miller and 2 1-0 wins. Up 3-2 in the series and 3-1 in game 6 it looked like Buffalo might pull off the upset but Philly came back and won it in OT and cruised to a game 7 win.
In the 4-5 series Tampa won 3 games in Pittsburgh including a 1-0 shutout in Game 7 to advance.
Philly will host 3 seed Boston while 1 seed Washington will match-up with Tampa.

Out West...

Top seeded and President's Trophy winner Vancouver won the first 3 against Chicago and looked to easily advance. But Chicago fought back, forcing a game 7 that went to overtime before Alex Burrows sent the 'Hawks home.
Second seed San Jose knocked out LA in 6, winning 3 overtime games along the way.
Detroit swept away Phoenix convincingly.
5th seed Nashville won their first playoff series in history, knocking off 4th seed Anaheim in 6.
Vancouver will draw the Preds while San Jose and Detroit will meet in the other Western Semi.

No lie, when Bergeron took the high-sticking penalty late in the 3rd, I turned my back to the TV at the bar and looked at my friends, because I KNEW how it would end. I KNEW that Montreal would score, and they'd win it on OT. They always do it.

Sure enough, Subban scored within seconds. Then the torture of the OT, with the Bruins looking flat for most of it. Then one faceoff violation, then one won faceoff for Krejci, then a whole series of won 50/50 battles along the boards, including McQuaid pinching low to get in tight on Subban, knocked out to Lucic at the right point, pass across to a charging Horton, shot off Halpern's skate and past Price.

They never won those games, especially against the MotherFucking Canadiens.

Guys, I don't know if I can do three more rounds with this team. They're going to kill me.

Game One, April 30, 2011
Boston 7 PHILLY 3

Fresh off an emotional 7 game series against Montreal the Bruins face the team that delivered a historic blow the previous year. Up 3-0 in the series center David Krejci was injured in Game 4 and the Bruins floundered through the next 4 before losing game 7 at home.
Krejci got the visiting Bruins going early, taking a Nathan Horton pass and knocking a backhander past Brian Boucher just 1:52 in. Daniel Briere evened it up midway through the first but Horton knocked in a Krejci rebound to give the Bruins back the lead at 19:24.
The Bruins exploded in the second as Mark Recchi (2:34), David Krejci (15:26) ad Brad Marchand (17:14) gave the visitors a commanding 5-1 lead, knocking Boucher out of the game in the process. James van Riemsdyk stopped the bleeding at 17:30 and the teams headed to the locker room with the Bruins up 3.
Mike Richards gave the home team hope with a power play goal at 13:02 but Marchand's second at 14:59 and Greg Campbell's first at 17:39 gave the Bruins an easy 7-3 win and a 1-0 series lead.

Game Two, May 2, 2011
Boston 3 PHILLY 2

The home team had revenge on their mind and looked good early, scoring on a 2 on 1 off a bad pinch just 29 seconds in and again on a power play at 9:31.
The Bruins struck back, however, and Chris Kelly knocked in a Kaberle rebound to get them on the board at 12:50 and Marchand evened it up at 14:15 after being set up in the high slot by Bergeron.
What looked like a track meet settled into a defensive and goal-tending battle (Thomas would go on to make 52 saves on the night) and the game remained tied at 2 through regulation.

With 4 minutes left in the first overtime Braydon Coburn's around the net pass eluded Kimmo Timonen and Nathan Horton pounced and fed Krejci in the slot for the one timer. Krejci celebrated, the Bruins started to leave the bench, and Lucic stood in front of Boucher pointing in the net but play went on. 18 seconds later an icing was whistled and after a short review Krejci was able to celebrate in earnest, sending the Bruins home with a commanding 2-0 lead in the series.

Game Three, May 4, 2011
BOSTON 5 Philly 1

If the Bruins felt overly comfortable being up 2-0 coming home all they needed to do is look back 2 weeks when they were in the same situation the Flyers were currently facing. This would be different.
Just 30 seconds in Brad Marchand gathered a rebound behind the net and fed a streaking Zdeno Chara at the left faceoff dot and snapped a shot past Boucher. 33 seconds after that Milan Lucic found David Krejci in front of the net and just 1:03 in the Bruins had a 2-0 lead.
The Bruins hit and hit and hit some more and at 13:39 of the second the Merlot line cashed in on a 3 on 2. Thornton drove to the net and Campbell fed Paille who beat Boucher clean. 1:35 later Horton completed the Gordie Howe hat trick with his 5th of the playoffs to put the Bruins up 4 and knock Boucher out of the game for the second time this series. Meszaros put the visitors on the board at 16:26 to send the teams to the locker room at 4-1.
Some late Flyer shenanigans gave the Bruins a 5 on 3 that even the Bruins couldn't screw up as Chara scored his second of the game. The first power play goal of the playoffs for the Bruins provided the final margin of 5-1.
Despite James van Riemsdyk playing like a combination of Gretzky, Lemieux, Orr, and Jesus Christ himself, the Bruins had a 3-0 series lead.
