I know why we all want to speculate about this -- as it's clearly the most important topic for the Pats' off-season, assuming no other legal machinations push it off -- but it's a bit foolhardy to try to predict the line on games that are 5 months away. We haven't seen the draft, or the invariable June FA signings, not to mention the pre-season injuries. Arizona may look formidable from here against Jimmy G playing in his first real game, but Carson Palmer is not exactly Lou Gehrig (or Brett Favre) in terms of durability -- the man's knee is an erector set. Does anyone else remember the infamous 1989 preseason where the Pats lost 3 key defensive starters in one game?

I hate to thread-derail, but your final sentence led me to Google and I found this article. Fun trip for the memory. Well, "fun" might not be the right word, but it's good to remember where you came from as a fan base. One highlight: "A week later, Madden’s story of the team’s home opener against the Dolphins started like this: “The punter thought he was a quarterback. The quarterback thought he was a tackling dummy and the coach thought he was a coach.”"

Even if they were 75% likely to win each game (they are not) the odds of sweeping the 4 are 30%. Put a more realistic 50% on each game and the odds of sweeping are 6%

I would be very surprised if they end up 4-0 and anyone saying otherwise is either vastly over rating Jimmy or under rating Brady
This a particularly egregious misuse of conditional probability.

Cross Hoyer off the list of potential fill-ins.

Signs with da Bears for 1 year/$2M. Little bit of a surprise that he's going somewhere with a seemingly solid QB ahead of him, but Cutler has missed 1 game each of the last 2 seasons and is Jay Cutler.

At this point, Hoyer has to take whatever he can get. The stink from that playoff performance is still on him. He'll probably finish out his career on a bunch of short deals. I think his chances of ever landing another starting gig are basically nil.

Cutler has been shaky at times over the years and has reached an age (33) where the wheels sometimes come off in a hurry, especially for guys who are exceptionally dependent on their physical gifts. Obviously, Hoyer would've preferred a chance to compete for a starting job, but assuming no one was offering that, Chicago is the best situation Hoyer was going to get.
