Maybe I'm being dense, and I know you're the marketing guy, but how does signing an alcoholic domestic abuser create marketing opportunities?
None for me, but if I think of it from the perspective of Jerry Jones:

Well, y'all won't understand this, but he's a great football player and this here's Texas . . .
Toss in the redemption angle (Jones being just arrogant enough to think that he'll be the one to finally get Johnny Football to clean up his act) and you have a recipe for keeping the Cowboys in the media 24/7.

Let me also be clear that I still believe that he won't play a down in 2016 and may never play again. But I am convinced that if Manziel makes even the slighted attempt to address his problem, Jones will jump on him.

The risk will be low - he won't get more than league minimum and will probably be a practice squad player even if he avoids a long suspension - the guaranteed media return will be high and if Johnny Football can turn himself around, it's a huge win. (Again, in Jerry's eyes, not mine.) But if Manziel does not make at least a token attempt at rehabilitating his image, if not his life, I agree that Jones won't bite.

Started the fall? Look who the optimist is.
Deflategate has probably been the worst thing to happen for this forum, but I actually think the slip started with the formation of Inside the Pylon. There was a period when the guys writing articles for ItP were diagraming d-line gap systems and route combinations in threads, and I learned more about football (soccer/hockey/lacrosse for me growing up) in those few months than I had in my previous years of existence combined. This isn't meant to be a shot at ItP, which is great. But when you take content like that out of the direct line of sight on the message board, discussion will suffer.

Still, Deflategate took that small slip and turned it into an avalanche.

If you are that delicate with your sensibilities and feel left out, get some better poster friends and be funnier.

Did you actually just post an ode to the glory days of being spoon-fed information?

Does your browser not work right? This is one of the laziest things I've ever seen.

Give the guy a break, probably a millennial who will vote for Sanders, was given a trophy for signing up for U8 soccer and still has his mom cut the crusts off his PB&J when home for the holidays.

Add in the fact that his lifestyle demands he hold a job and earn actual money to pay for shit like internet connections so he can complain on message boards about how shit was easier when people gave him everything. Well, life is hard, yo.

Now get over here RFDA2000, I'll wipe your nose for you.

I'm not sure exactly what the browser comment means. If you're assuming I don't go to ItP or don't like it, you're wrong. The articles are great, and I learn a ton about football. I loved the punt coverage pieces on Slater in particular. You're just not going to get that type of piece in most sports sections.

I also didn't mean my post to be heaping derision on BbtL. It's still the first place I come for Patriots news, and ironically it's been the only place worth following actual Deflategate news. I just thought that when the ItP type stuff was being posted in here, other folks who know way more about football than I were more likely to riff off of them, and I liked the forum even more. Mea culpa, you guys disagree.

Edit: Or I guess I could phrase it like this...Remember that time BbtL was so awesome that people decided there was enough good posting that they could start their own football website? That was awesome.

The other side of that coin is that some of the rest of us have gotten an increased exposure to their awesomeness. Contrary to what some of you may believe, the football world doesn't revolve around the Patriots. Some of us actively hate them so much that we avoid any and all discussion and news about them. It's shocking, I know.

What am I getting at, you ask? What I'm getting at is that I - and likely many others - had limited, if any, exposure to the awesome technical breakdowns of some of ItP's finest. That's because the majority of their work was isolated in Pats threads, which means that those of us who are football apostates didn't get to bask in the glory of their glorious football minds. I, for one, would like to thank everyone involved in ItP because I've learned a metric shit ton from that site. RandomLetters2000's viewpoint is not at all representative of how people with functioning human brains view the work being done there.

*I sincerely hope that anyone who can read above a third grade level can parse out which part of this post is sarcasm and which is not.

What about the big words you used? I hate carrying around my dictionary, dammit. It's weight-y and stuff.

The Patriots did play the Cowboys this year so you are lying that you avoided all news about them

Liar.

Jesus Christ, the point he was making is neither complicated nor incendiary. No one is suggesting anything negative about ITP or its existence. The offense being taken to such an innocuous comment is startling. The post above mine is also a pristine example of casual riffing among two or three people unfolding in the middle of discussions.

I don't have any hot takes to offer about the state of the forum, but it's not that hard to see where people are coming from.

As a Browns fan, I rarely read this forum so I have no opinion about whether this forum is good or bad.

But @gingerbreadmann should read @RFDA2000 post again.

When I saw how many new posts there were in here, I thought for sure we'd finally cut Manziel. Oh well. Spring training starts next week.

He merely pointed out that a consequence of it existing is that those sorts of posts no longer reside on here and offered the opinion that that has hurt the board. He went out of his way to praise the site itself and mention how he reads it regularly.

Unless there is something obvious that I'm missing, that doesn't seem too controversial. But I will go back to lurking and leave the thread derailing to the dopes. Apologies for contributing to this sideshow.

Jesus, this is a weird run of comments. As (mainly) a lurker, BbtL totally was impacted by ITP. I can't imagine arguing otherwise. It's not a slight to ITP-it's great, and everyone saying this is saying the same thing. But those posts aren't here anymore.

The only insult to the ITP folks would be if someone was arguing that then bringing that content somewhere else *didn't* diminish this forum.

This thread has gone Johnny Manziel. Which I guess is somehow appropriate?

edit: my humble suggestion: if you are thinking about posting something in this thread that isn't about JM, don't.

edit^2: irony.

don't think about it? okay

In all seriousness, I'm struggling to see how any of the arguments against him going to the Cowboys matter. People in this thread are thinking "why would they want him? it's a gigantic waste of money, the guy might not even play, and he abuses women and drugs". Meanwhile in Jerryworld, people are thinking the only downsides are that it's a waste of money, that he might not play, and that he abuses women and drugs. What's not to like?

Matt Cassel, Brandon Weeden, and Kellen Moore started a combined 12 games last year, leading the 'boys to a 4-12 record. Manziel magic would have been absolutely perfect for them last year. It's a match made in heaven.
