Yah totally agree. If some of these guys stick around with next year's class, that will be a stud team.

Usually they peak in November haha

Keep in mind our PG should be a senior in HS right now - he reclassified to graduate early after Tyus declared.

Just horrendous officiating so far, classic case of the game moving too fast for the fat old dude refs

Duke set offense sucks, it's all isos, but transitions are fucking great

I realize they are trying to change the game but refs this season are going way overboard on calling imaginary fouls that look like it but are actually just really good D. Ruining the game.

Always good to see the mid-majors play power 5 teams tough, even if they can't quite get over the hump for the win. I imagine that school from Connecticut will improve and have a chance to redeem themselves later this year.

Great game between UNC and Maryland - both teams played at a very high level and shot the ball tremendously well. Marcus Paige was outstanding in his first game of the season.

20 TOs by MD implies carelessness or good defense, but the good defense explanation does not square with MD shooting 55%+ (until the last 80 seconds when they had to just toss up a bunch of desperation 3's).

Also, sketchy FT shooting at the end - good thing those 3's were crappy shots...

I have a real affinity for this team. Mostly it's because the guys have predominately been here 3-4 years and I have been fortunate enough to be in town and see them play live way more than any other team. Even five years ago I would be excited for a one game over the holiday break.

The other part is Paige, of course. He's a joy to root for and his energy/vibe is infectious. Berry is my favorite player on the team, Justin Jackson is my favorite player to watch play defense. I am so much like a 9 year old boy when it comes to Carolina basketball that I purposively do not write in this thread because I know exactly how pathetic I sound.

Anyway, last night was great. I hope that, unlike Louisville at home last year, it was part of a great season and not the highlight of a good season.

I'll add I miss having Maryland in the league - Louisville, Pitt and Syracuse were all fine additions but I'd trade any of them to the Big Ten to get Maryland back.

Fuck Maryland. Their fan base sucks, their teams suck and they can whither down to nothing in the Big Ten.

Their teams do suck. They were good for like 2 years, won a natty, and think they are a top tier program. They blow. They've made 2 (TWO) final fours, EVER, and it was in 2 years. Fuck, they haven't made the sweet 16 since 2003 - that's 12 years. Why would you want that program in your conference?

Not to mention that the Maryland fanbase is probably the biggest group of assholes I have ever encountered. With most fanbases, there is always a small minority that run around and try to make things miserable for other people. It even happens with Duke. But whenever I travel to games, I am consistently amazed that the majority of fans for any school are generally reasonable, well-educated, and enjoyable people to talk to. Even from Kentucky.

Maryland is the one school that stands out where almost every fan I have met is a complete asshole to anyone wearing an opposing color. And they consistently made life miserable for players' families when visiting College Park as well. In conclusion, fuck Maryland.

Y'all are no fun - watching them be obsessed with Duke and then constantly get the football pulled away from them a la Charlie Brown in gut-busting fashion was hilarious, even for a UNC supporter.

I'd rather have Maryland than NC State.

Totally agree that Maryland fans suck. I remember traveling in March 2001 or 2002 - the high of the rivalry - and running into some Maryland fans. I hadn't told them I was a Duke guy and was telling them I thought their team was really good, played hard, big time threat to win it all... they asked me where I went or who I rooted for or whatever and when I said I went to Duke, they literally said "fuck you". After a perfectly pleasant conversation up to that point. Yeah, isolated incident, only two yahoos, whatever, but that is the picture they paint

There was a certain satisfaction with them thinking they had a rivalry because they won like three games, but they are just such miserable people that it wasn't really enjoyable. At least with NC State, you have the fun of having a new guy come in every four years, have one great recruiting class and have everyone talking about how they're back to greatness, and then watch them completely implode and half the team transfer before moving on to the next coach.

Holy shit. Brice Johnson just dropped 39/23 on FSU at their place. No Carolina player has ever gone for 30/20 in a game, and Johnson almost made that 40/20.

Top five single game performance in the history of UNC basketball. I can't put it over Sean May's 26/24 against Duke given the opponent and the stakes in that game, but it's up in that area.

Yup. It didn't hurt that Hamilton put all his eggs in the really-tall-big-man basket. I haven't seen two guys with worse court sense since the early days of Kris Lang and Brendan Haywood.

apparently ESPN was wrong about that and has corrected it on Twitter

Famous last words but this is my favorite Tar Heel club in a while. It isn't just Marcus and the Marcusettes like it has been the last couple seasons - he had three points tonight @ Syracuse and the team still won by 11 and scored 84 points. Just give them some good health and see where the chips fall in the end.

Duke looks like they're getting better since the loss to Utah and Miami, Pitt, and Louisville all look good too.

Duke is working through adjusting to the Amile Jefferson injury but UNC is a better team this year. Duke still has a shot at the final four though

I do think this is the strongest UNC team in the past 5 years. I probably have them, UVA, then Duke in the ACC this year. Duke is in the same situation as 09 where they just don't have enough interior depth, but Plumlee has been putting up some big numbers lately. But guys playing these types of minutes tend to wear down over the full season.

Have you seen Miami and/or Louisville? For that matter, and more pointedly, have you seen Virginia? I do not have them as the second best team. I'd say that goes to Miami or Duke.

I haven't seen Miami yet, and I think UVA is just going through some struggles right now, but they have experienced talent that will square itself away in the long run.

Oh man I can get standing room tix for the ND game on Saturday. Wild atmosphere last year. But Pats kick off at 4:30. Hmm. Can't risk it.
