Never broken your fibula?

It's not broken because doctors say it's not broken after the x-ray, not because he's walking on it.
He was walking around on it normally AFTER the X-ray. There's no reason for the Pats to play games with the media on a fib fracture. Everyone sounds pretty sure he doesn't have a broken bone in his leg.

Realistically the next important game could be January 17 in the divisional round, so he has a few weeks to heal up whatever the injury may be.

Worst case you have to think they go 12-4 and most likely they go 13-3 to 15-1 and secure a 1 or 2 seed. Next week is a cakewalk, then the Jets game might be a tough one, but they should be able to handle Houston, Miami and Tennessee with out without Gronk.
Given the injury situation with this team, there aren't any "cake walks" on the schedule. I'm sure the coach feels that way.

Yeah, no shit. It's why I said that I "assumed" it was a broken leg. All of the tweets confirmed otherwise. I'm not arguing with the reports.

I assumed broken leg if anything.

Fingers crossed it's nothing.

Then somebody is living right because I can't remember the last time somebody was carted off with a leg injury and played anytime soon. Even Ben this year hobbled off under his own power with help.
OTOH--Larry Csonka wrecked his knee when he was with the Giants and walked off the field like nothing happened.

If they had held on, I would not have had a problem with Gronk sitting out until the playoffs (or maybe the final game of the regular season)... assuming he's "fine".

I didn't think the hit on Gronk in the first half when a DB went low was all that dirty -- the hit was closer to his thigh than his knee and the DB did have to stop Gronk there.

The injury was a dirty shot. DB dove at his back leg, after the ball was well beyond the receiver. Fuck that guy sideways.

Oh yeah, Hightower's hurt too. This is a joke.
Your QB disagrees

Here
That wasn't a dirty hit at all. He was going right at his thigh/hip, which is where he should be going. Brady's throw was high and left Gronk a bit vulnerable.

Here
Gronk was holding his knee and writing in pain, I figured it was a broken knee cap. Glad to be wrong. He wouldn't have been walking around with a broken knee cap. Now the target date I'm looking at is Houston. They're going to need all the offense they can get.

I'm not celebrating until the MRI comes back clean. To this point, it's far better than I expected.

I know this is impossible to answer without more detail but any thoughts from the Docs on how long a strained MCL usually takes to come back from?
Not a doc, but recent comp is Matt Forte. MCL strain. Missed 3 games. I'm sure there are a variety of levels/grades of strains. Hoping for the best on both of these guys today.

Rapsheet: The belief is #Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski suffered no structural damage in his knee. Tests coming today, but his time out should be minimal

1-6 weeks. He was out on the sidelines in the second half and trying out some straight-line running on the sidelines so that's a good sign.

And can we PLEASE put a moratorium on any more "Well, he was walking on it, so..." - being able to walk on a leg injury means almost nothing in terms of prognosis in the absence of further info. Not just in this scenario, but in any case. I'm probably guilty of it myself from time to time, but it's not really indicative of much other than the ability to walk, which isn't winning any games any time soon.

I think I'm crankier than usual this morning - being up on Twitter until after 1AM and being at work at 6:30 didn't help. But hey, I can walk - that's good!

Isn't the no brace part more important than the actual walking on it? If they feared ligament damage, wouldn't they put him in a brace for precautions?

Another recent comp was Gates who (if memory serves correctly) only missed a couple weeks due to an MCL sprain.

Gates only missed week 7 against the Raiders; Mariota missed 2 weeks with a grade 2 sprain.

I think the lesson, as always, is to wait for more info and then let DRS tell us what to think.

I will tell you what to think and when to think it.

The problem with extrapolating from one player's injury to another is that the grade of injury may be different, if they have any pre-existing issues that may change things, the demands of their position may impact their return to play, etc.

Long story short - shut up, give me $10.

“@RapSheet: Sounds like #Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (knee) is unlikely to miss more than one game, I’m told. In fact, he may not even miss that.”

Which is exactly my point.

Yet it happens. Every. Fucking. Time.

Can I get an installment plan for the 10$?

When he got up to get on the cart he flexed his leg. Looks like it was just really painful. I doubt he's doing that with a blown up knee or a broken bone, but you never know. Great news.

They should probably hold him out this week regardless.

Pats get lucky again. /nonpatsfan
Laugh, but we are fortunate. That's three potential season Enders dodged when you include Slater.

As for DRS, he is much more expansive and reasonably priced than Clark Clifford, the legend for this sort of thing.

I still wouldn't play him vs. the Eagles.
Not sure how to say this without knowing the diagnosis. If he has a much higher risk of aggravating the injury than if he sits a week or two, sure, but if he's cleared to play he should play.

I don't recall ever hearing this much "source"-based speculation about a Pats injury. I'll high-five if the MRI results bear out the optimism. Until then, I'm waiting for the next gut punch.

That chatter gives me hope though in that season enders are always quiet until the IR designation is announced.

In my dream world the Patriots pick up steam after this and get healthy while winning the #1 seed. Meanwhile Denver/Brock get termed the team of destiny like the 2001 Patriots. They end up coming to Foxborough for the AFCCG and we unleash a healthy team on them and win going away 38-10 crushing fans' souls and media hype machines alike. This is not a farfetched dream. I would like to see it happen. I feel strangely emboldened after dodging this Gronk bullet. I hope the tram does as well.

The Patriots would gladly take Sunday night’s loss if they can get their star tight end back. The video of a ferocious hit to the legs and Rob Gronkowski writhing in pain scared everyone. On further film review, the right foot being off the ground likely saves Gronk from serious injury. My hope/expectation in real time was for contusion/bone bruise or possible mild knee sprain (LCL/PCL) without structural damage. MRI will be obtained this AM.

Early source reports, video of Gronk walking and dressing normally seem to indicate optimism. Hope this star tight end meets a better fate than Graham’s season ender.

Yeah the analogue that came to mind for me was the 2004 Steelers. Pats get beat in the regular season to end a long winning streak, win comfortably as clearly the better team once the postseason rolls around. Its not far fetched for sure, Id gladly lay points in a rematch in Denver with Edelman, Gronk, and Collins on the field.

Yeah, obviously want everyone but Im fine laying points if you just give the Pats those three guys back (or Hightower for the full game instead of Collins).
