Mike Carey illustrates, almost in real time, how inscrutable the NFL rulebook is.

I honestly don't know on that one. He had it on first contact wtih ground, and both went out of bounds and lost it before showing obvious 'completion'

Guess I'd go with 'completed when he landed' but since the rule is now indecipherable, who knows?

I wonder if different head refs have slightly different but consistent interpretation of the catch rule.

It seems like bryant's arm was on the ball before chancellor had both feet down, potentially establishing simulataneous possesion before chancellor could clearly secure the ball. Then, after rolling out of bounds, the ball pops loose. I agree with everyone else that the rule is a mess but I can see where Mike Carey was coming from.

The problem you have now is that camera tech and quality is so good now relative to even 10-15 years ago and you have this emphasis on objectivity validated by instant replay on certain calls. Its simply not about 'opinion' or how a ref sees it anymore.
Florio on his podcast suggested reducing the amount of refs on the field and moving them upstairs where they can send the correct call down to the field refs where anything is in dispute. That seems like a fine idea if the audience, the announcers, the NFL, the gamblers all want that objective call. The current model just seems antiquated anymore.

In fantasyville, I'd love to have all the head refs look at the best 4-5 replays of a dozen borderline catches and mark down anonymously whether they think it was a catch.

Part of the problem is that fans don't have consistent expectations. It's no accident that just about every big controversy has involved a scoring or sideline play -- if the Golden Tate, OBJ, or Dez Bryant plays occurred in the middle of the field and were called catch + fumble, people would be irate. And rightly so.

It went against my team today, but I'm ok with resolving ambiguity on these plays in favor of ruling them incomplete. And aside from the ridiculous Golden Tate catch, that's largely what the NFL has done.

Yup. Steelers are still very much in the thick of it:
  • vs. Colts
  • @ Bengals
  • vs. Broncos
  • @ Ravens
  • @ browns
That's 3 fairly sure wins. I think they'll also take 1 out of Bengals/Broncos matchup.

If Ben is out the Colts are no sure thing. I am assuming his baseline is low enough that the concussion won't keep him out next week, but they are no shoo in against the Colts with Jones starting.

As you alluded to, the problem really lies with people's expectations of officiating. The game has gotten bigger and stronger and faster and a ref's ability to process information isn't speeding up.

What they should do is limit reviews to normal speed replays on the theory that if you can't tell that a call is wrong at normal speed, then the call should stand. The problem is that super slow motion can see things that a normal human can't and that shouldn't be part of officiating.

Justin Gilbert goes down returning a kick on a low tackle by the kicker, no less.

It's obvious football is not a game to play with human knees.

No one watching tonght?

Two bad teams and two backup QBs, (Schaub for BAL, Austin Davis stepping in for McCown for CLE). But not a bad game.

I feel bad for the Browns. So should every NFL fan.

Good news! Ravens with a good chance to pick outside of a top-10 pick.

BTW, that kick looked way, way to the left from the TV angle. Most likely a miss even without the block.

Unbelievable.

It was dumb fir the Browns to run up the middle there, either throw one and call TO or kick the 50 yarder there.

And no one realized that they have to play the extra pont/2 pt conversion? This wasn't overtime guys!

I think the Browns were trying to lose the game. That's the only reason I can figure for the last sequence of plays - particularly why Davis decided to go down before getting a couple of more yards and going out of bounds.

Coons was aiming for Urban's hands. He's that good. And if you notice, Coons wasn't trying to chase down Hill.

Pretty sneaky sis.

QB giving himself up before getting out of bounds didn't do them any favors.
Quite possibly the most incomprehensible play I've ever seen. He could have gotten at least three more yards and stopped the clock.

Dumervil's face mask penalty to ends the Jags game was pretty stupid but at least you can say he was caught up in the emotion. Have no idea why Davis did what he did unless he was under orders not to win the game.
