Mangala is a disaster in all facets... I'll take it though.

Outside of Lallana/Firmino/Coutinho... dare I say Lovren was outstanding, and covered for Moreno really well on a number of occasions. If he can keep some level of competence moving forward that makes Sakho's absence that much easier to take. Lucas was excellent as well - made a necessary foul for a yellow in the 38' that prevented him from going in on Aguero for his goal, but otherwise provided great cover for the back 4

Home to Bordeaux on Thanksgiving then home to Swansea next Sunday - the latter should be interesting with a suspended Lucas.

Sturridge pulled out of the squad just before the match with foot discomfort. They are sending him for a scan. Sad really. He's as brittle as Tony Romo.

What would be the motivation for a world beating team be to sell its goalkeeper?
No idea .. Actually I vaguely remember a story where Barca was a little cash strapped and might have to sell off someone. IIRC they have a completely presentable backups.

At any rate there HAVE been rumours swirling around Ter Stegen. He's not actually the managers first choice these days and may want out.

I wouldn't mind the signing- don't get me wrong. It just doesn't pass the sniff test.

I feel like the British media (or maybe the football media in general) will print anything, including rumors simply made up to sell papers. Maybe that's a misconception on my part, but every window it seems like every hot player in the world is headed to a British team.

Yeah, you always have to consider the source. Metro is a daily rag, not exactly the most reliable outlet. It's over a month until the window opens, anyways.

Oh I know .. But if you Google ter Stegen Liverpool there are many reports .. Although most are from similar rags.

But this is entering the silly season. There have been reports that Liverpool were going to bring in Lewandoski and Thomas Muller for Christ's sake. This is what you get I guess with a high profile manager.

If you´re thinking german players for Liverpool, i would consider players who aren´t at the biggest clubs already and might be looking for a pay raise.
I guess Klopp wants dominant players, no matter where they come from, so if someone is at Barca (Ter Stegen isn´t dominating, so i´m not talking about him here, alright), Bayern, Juve, PSG,..., there´s no need to go to Liverpool, because at those clubs, they are already 1) earning the biggest money possible and 2) dominating at huge clubs.

So thinking about players like Lewandowski and Müller, Kevin Trapp, Özil,.., i don´t think there´s a big reason (besides the small Klopp connection for some, but he could be gone in an instant) to go to Liverpool.
The best option for german or german-based players would be to pick someone from Dortmund, Schalke, Leverkusen, Gladbach, Augsburg, Mainz, who are playing in Europa League and CL. Those guys would have a reason to go to Liverpool (much more money), might see a connection to Klopp and will come a lot cheaper than those huge sums for guys like Lewandowski.

I don´t think it makes sense to buy someone from Dortmund, as there isn´t anyone there who would be a safe bet to make it at Liverpool (Kagawa, Mikhitaryan had trouble at ManUnited / Dortmund, Reus is an injury waiting to happen, Hummels makes many mistakes, but gets criticized by the fans and might leave soon) or couldn´t help Liverpool for a reasonable price (Aubameyang is running wild, but i don´t know if Liverpool needs another front man, who could come for 75mil.€). The only players i could imagine are Sokratis as defensive depth and Aubameyang if they really want to spend big.

I think it makes more sense to look at other clubs. Who i´m thinking about?
Bernd Leno (Leverkusen, 23, keeper, contract til 18)
Jonathan Tah (Leverkusen, 19, CB, contract til 20)
Sané (Schalke, 19, att.midfield, contract til 19)
Granit Xhaka (Gladbach, 23, def.midfield, contract til 19)
Julian Brandt (Leverkusen, 19, att.midfield, contract til 19)

Klopp doesn´t need superstars and established guys for his system. He needs young players who can run 90minutes with perfect technical ability (also as defenders). If he wants to install a system like at Dortmund, i don´t think he would buy many offensive threats, as there´s already many options.
None of these players has to be sold with only one year remaining, some just came to their clubs or signed new contracts. And if they leave, it will be very expensive (Sané just joined the national team and Julian Brandt will be the next). If he wants to develop some young talent, buy some players like Sané, Tah (just went from Hamburg to Leverkusen for 10mil.€) or Brandt for 20-25mil.€ each, I would guess. Bernd Leno is also on the brink of joining the national team (Weidenfeller just leaving, still too many young keepers rotating behind Neuer) on regular basis and plays in CL basically each season with Leverkusen (150+ Bundesliga matches, 20+CL matches played).
Granit Xhaka led the turnaround at Gladbach this season (started with 6 losses in CL and Bundesliga, then won 8, drew 3 and lost 1 including CL), is a hothead in central midfield, runs around a lot (regularly with high distance/match), has very good technical ability (but lower than Sané and Brandt) and is now captaining Mönchengladbach.
It is rumored he has a 30mil.€ buy-out clause and he was linked several times with Liverpool (and Atletico) already.
If I´m a fantasy GM, I would buy three of those for 80mil.€... :)

Klopp to Sturridge: "Suck it up, Buttercup."

“The situation is Daniel was very often injured in the last few months, and maybe years, so it is normal when you get back in training usually it is not the same quality [as before the injury] but you need training,” (Klopp) said. “Your body has to learn to adapt to new intensities of training and in this time you have to learn what is serious pain and what is only pain."

The thought had crossed my mind that Sturridge might be a guy that wants to be truly pain free to play. If that was the criteria for me to go to work I'd never get out of bed.

I understand being gun shy about injuries. Some athletes are especially protective as it truly is their livelihood. We don't know exactly what's going on, but it makes a bit more sense to me that he doesn't know how to differentiate pain from an injury.

You're not going to like this, but I've also seen rumors saying that Klopp is interested in Timo Horn, as well. Does that seem plausible?
Plausible from the player site, yes. Horn(22) would make even more sense than Leno(23), as he plays at smaller FC Köln and is probably at the same level as Bernd Leno. The difference between those two is that Leno has proven himself on the international stage. Horn might want to improve his standing and seek international glory, so that Jogi Löw gets him on his screen. Kind of the same move what Kevin Trapp did (Eintracht Frankfurt to PSG for 9/10mil.€). Horn is the guy who comes cheaper, Leno is the safer bet.

Edit: --and 1.FC Köln is not 1.FC Kaiserslautern: Köln are the Goats, Kaiserslautern are the Red Devils!--

I like when Klopp looks like he's been on a four-day bender while harassing the referee. Hair out of place, talking with a asymmetrical mouth, eyes bugging...

The "he's winning 4-1, he's winning 4-1, Adam Lallana, he's winning 4-1" song after the grief Lallana was getting from the home fans was beyond outstanding also.

Topped only by them immediately updating the lyrics to 5-1 after the Ibe goal.

Liverpool will win the group with a point, Sion qualify with a point. The pitch is frozen.

In the "not a shock" department, it's 0-0 in the 90th minute and there have been 2 shots on goal the entire game (both by Liverpool).

This piece in the Washington Post will probably go over the heads of most Liverpool fans - me included - but for those here that are turned on by statistics, you might find it an interesting take on our recent improvements.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fancy-stats/wp/2015/12/04/jurgen-klopp-has-built-a-powerful-defensive-liverpool-side/?postshare=6521449303208170&tid=ss_tw
Thanks for this. I thought that the data show that Rodgers had bad luck and then we regressed to the mean.

Beyond this and after the draw with WBA, I think we are who we are and what we are is mediocre.

That's why Mignolet fits in so well!

Seriously though, that was some fucking bullshit. Forget about the poor distribution - he's had the most errors leading to goal in the league the last three seasons and it is totally unacceptable.

Also Benteke looked mediocre again. He can score some crazy goals from anywhere but I'm wondering if he really has the movement to excel in this system. Dude was a statue today.

On the plus side, most teams are mediocre this year, and Liverpool gained a point on United and Spurs this week.

As if our injury crisis isn't extensive enough, both Coutinho & Lovren have gone off with what look like hamstring injuries in the first 30 minutes of our 1st leg Capital One Cup semi with Stoke.

Our centre-back partnership is now Toure & Lucas...we have no other fit centre-half in the club.

I fucking hate so many games at this time of year - I've said for years we need a break, even if it's just a couple of weeks - and we've got Exeter in the FA Cup in 72 hours time.
