The place for free-agent deals and trades that don't need their own threads:

-- A.J. Pierzynski gets a $1MM signing bonus, a $2MM base salary and another $1MM worth of incentives, tweets Rosenthal, who also adds that the veteran catcher had a more lucrative offer but chose to return to Atlanta instead.

-- The Mariners announced that they’ve re-signed outfielder Franklin Gutierrez to a one-year, Major League contract. The Octagon client and long-time Mariner enjoyed an excellent rebound season in 2015.

Surprised by this, I thought he could get 45/3 somewhere. It's not like he's a strong candidate to substantially raise his stock. Maybe he thought the QO would scare teams away?
Not surprised one bit. No one was going higher than 10 million a year for him. Agent probably read the market.

Not here
So we go from nobody ever having accepted the QO to three.

I'm sure that's of some interest, I just don't know what it means.

The value of the qualifying offer and the depth of this free agency class main reasons. Plus everything happens in threes.

This seems plausible. But then you wonder why teams didn't adjust for these factors in when making the offers. Maybe teams are adopting the strategy the Red Sox have taken for a while of overpaying in AAV to save on years? All three (for different reasons) seem like the kind of relatively high-risk, high-upside players for whom that approach makes some sense.

That would be the interesting explanation. Of course it may well be just a fluke: three is really not that many.

I think it means some guys have paid attention to players like Kendry Morales and Stephen Drew sitting around for half a season. I think guys on the fringe are going to be more likely to grab the cash now that the dynamics have shifted on draft pick comp and perceived value.

I feel like Weiters could have gotten a real nice deal though still. He is the one confusing one for me.
I forget who it was (since I've been reading so many writers lately) but they made the point that Weiters makes $15.8M this year in basically a pillow contract and -- barring injury -- re-enters the FA market at a time when the team most consider a primary destination (Atlanta) should be ready to go from tear-down to build-back mode. In essence, he doesn't have to go through what this season looks like in Atlanta -- and at the same time completely answers all questions about his recovery.

Yes, it's a risk. But it's a risk for which he's making $15.8M

That and he won't have the draft pick compensation hanging around his neck in FA next year.

There is nothing stopping a team from offering a qualifying offer in consecutive seasons. Here is an article from CJ Nitkowski where that is one of his complaints about the system.

I see the argument. And I am sure Weiters and his team did the research and were putting out feelers, I just feel like a team would step up to the plate with 3 year $45 mil deal or something like that.

I'm sure he could have as well, but why not take the one year deal at a higher AAV and then go on the market? If he took a 3/$45 deal, he's going back on the market as a 33 yo catcher that may or may not have improved his stock. He's essentially guaranteed to improve his stock on this one year deal almost simply by showing he's healthy and recovered and then hit the market as a 31 yo guy that can probably get a 4-5 year deal at that point. I would also guess that Boras had some feelers out after the WS and at the GM meetings and had a good idea of what he could get.

Agreed, PP. Wieters is likely shooting for a McCann level deal, not 3/$45. And Boras will get it for him if he can catch 100+ games and not suck.

A's sign Rich Hill, one year, 6 million. Classic Billy Beane, strike early in FA, sign a guy that people aren't sure they should believe in.

That's a nice deal for the Tigers. Makes the Gose deal looks even fucking stupider is hindsight though

I don't get this one for the A's. Are they rebuilding again? I've given up trying to make sense of Billy Beane is doing.
Well, Chavez is a year away from free agency and Hendriks (9.9/1.5 K/BB ratio, 2.92 ERA in 2014) will be under Oakland control for four more years.

Please name another GM who has made the playoffs 8 times in the last 17 years with a bottom five payroll.

I'll hang up and listen....
Not many GMs have been lucky enough to be in a franchise with such a high tolerance for mediocrity that they'll get 17 years for the privilege of making it to the first round of the playoffs. And to get promoted after finishing last to boot, I'd love a job like that.

Fair enough. Chavez has shown flashes as a starter, at times, which will probably be his role in Toronto. Didn't expect to see him swapped for a reliever, though the control years help.

Oakland gets Jed Lowrie back from Oakland for pitcher Brandon McCurry

Pirates get Allen Webster from the D'backs for cash

Turning over the entire roster several times, the A's have averaged 86.9 wins over the past 17 years. I'll take that mediocrity (Sox have averaged 88.7). They've finished last twice.

Good trade of the A's, I think. McCurry's upside is a reliever and Lowrie's better than he played after his injury last season.

White Sox signed Alex Avila to a 1 year deal.

And with a payroll that at its highest was still less than 50% of the Red Sox payroll in the same season.

Given their financial situation, their stadium situation and their divisional competition, it isn't unrealistic to picture the A's mirroring what the Pirates did from ~1993-2012 had they had a different GM (likely multiple GMs) at the helm over the last 17-18 years.
