Brayan Bello signed to a 6 year, $55 million extension

Of course they can wait, but either he pitches well and the buy out price goes up, or he pitches poorly and they go year to year. The only way to get a good deal is to take a risk, pay him less overall, and hope that he will continue to improve the way your (the team's) metrics predict.

    Another Surgery for Pedey

So this is really just hypothetical since Pedroia only had 2 years left and the Sox are basically at the top lux tax threshold, but related to the buyout talk from earlier in the thread - let's say a fairly low payroll team (50+ mil under the 1st lux tax threshold) had a player who suffered a...

Cutting The Cord on Cable/Satellite TV Service?

Just took the leap into the 5-day free trial of YouTube TV with the intent of cancelling my Xfinity cable on Tuesday. So far the only issue I'm having is that NESN seems to buffer a lot on my (admittedly inexpensive) Vizio SmartCast TV in my bedroom. I'm assuming it's the TV (since it works fine...

Rafael Devers, JD Martinez and the future at the corners

Not directly, but if they think the newfound ability to hit is real then it does make it more feasible to shift JDM's money toward fixing pitching or extending Betts. This is even more true if they believe Devers is hitting his stride. If those two are really .800 and .900 (or better) OPS guys...

(video) Amir Garrett charges the Pirates dugout and tries to take on the entire team on his own (now with PHOTOS)

My favorite part of this is that players from 3 teams were suspended. There can't be too many examples of players being suspended after they've already been traded to an uninvolved team.

MLB needs to expand the roster to 26 so teams can keep an enforcer in the dugout like the NHL (used to?).

BA: MLB is targeting an international draft, as soon as 2020. w/ hard caps, rotating top picks

Yes, but the point of a draft with hard slots would be to stop those top teams from doing that. By guaranteeing that at least one top team gets a top 5 pick every year, they are at least partially defeating the purpose. If that's not MLB's goal, then I'm not sure what the point of a draft...

BA: MLB is targeting an international draft, as soon as 2020. w/ hard caps, rotating top picks

It also means that an already good team is guaranteed a top 5 prospect every year. Imagine if the AL East was this year's division - Orioles, Jays, Sox, Rays, Yankees as the top 5? 2 of the best international prospects in the world would go too the Sox and Yankees? Sports radio would break...

MLB/Atlantic league to experiment with the idea of stealing first base

Thanks, I knew there had been a change related to broken bats but apparently I had the timeline backwards.

Nightengale: MLB doping question is back

I mean that's about as clear as could be that it's the ball and not PEDs. The better question at this point is whether it was intentional or an unintended manufacturing change.

MLB/Atlantic league to experiment with the idea of stealing first base

Also, wasn't one of the reasons for changing bat material the dangers of broken bats? There's no way the league would force the use of a more dangerous bat (right?...right?)

Baseball Is Broken (on the field, proposed rule changes, attendance, etc.)

Depends on your definition. If he goes and publicly retracts/apologizes for the statement then I kinda agree with you. If he accepted getting yelled at by league officials and then walked away, I think that's about the appropriate reaction of an adult professional. What would you rather he do...

MLB/Atlantic league to experiment with the idea of stealing first base

That was my first thought too. If the rule actually took hold (it won't), we likely would never see another knuckleballer.

    Home Run Derby/ASG Game Thread

This screen layout is a complete mess. Whoever designed it should be fired. WAY too much going on - no way to actually focus on the hitter

Baseball Is Broken (off the field/labor relations etc.)

I think this is a logical step. Something like: teams have the 3 unrestricted options they have now, then after that they can option a player (at full salary - though maybe only some percentage of it counts toward the luxury tax?) But the player has the right to elect free agency instead. The...
