James Pearce suggested last week that LFC believes Al Ittihad will get up to £200m this week. Now whether or not there’s reps in London and the bid is up to £215m is specific enough to warrant a very well placed source that I don’t know if Jacobs has. But it’s not out of the realm of what LFC is waiting for.

IF they have reps in London AND IF they are getting ready for another bid then you’d have to think - given the £150m bid was summarily dismissed - it would have to be close to £200m to get LFC to the table. So Its a perfectly plausible story .

Of course they could be in London merely shopping at Harrods.

It’s deadline day for the Saudi clubs, and it doesn’t look like a new offer for Mo has been lodged. Maybe those KSA reps were in London to sign a sponsorship deal with Chelsea, eh?

Or they were hoping some back channel inquiries would lead to full negotiations - and they didn’t. Hope they had a nice time.

See you in May

The whole thing played out so odd to me. Did the saudis just assume that Salah would just come so they would be trying to jam Liverpool as much as possible in terms of finding a replacement? In turn, hoping that Henry would get fed up and look to officially sell the club?

I think this is what they’ve been doing to players to try and get them. Whisper to the player’s agent that they’re willing to double wages and get the player worked up and force their way out of their current club and (maybe) save a little on the transfer fee if the club doesn’t want to deal with a malcontent. I’m glad Salah didn’t take it

I think it might be two things
- hoping Salah would agitate to leave
And - when money is no object - they had no sense of the realities of the transfer market. They probably figured the £150m offer would get it done - without really caring about LFC’s inability of replacing him

Here’s a bag of money - welcome to the team!

Yeah, maybe I’m looking at it wrong. There were two baskets of players that made the jump - ones that their club were happy to get the player off the books and ones like Mitrovic who had to force their way there.

I guess I just saw Salah as a priority while Mitrovic or Veiga were luxuries.

We won’t know how early the discussions started, but if KSA was serious it would need to have been at the start of the window. If they offered 100m before the price structure exploded and Liverpool thought they could line up a replacement, maybe it gets done. Last minute with the adjusted market without any shot of bringing somebody in… Nope.

Salah also strikes me as a player that won’t agitate and break his contract. I could be out to lunch on that but it seems to fit the profile both sides have cultivated for years.

I just hope they can get something similar either in January or next summer.

They almost certainly have to sell him next summer, otherwise he’ll leave on a free in 2025. I can’t see him wanting to sign an extension , nor do I think LFC would offer one - or maybe a couple of years at reduced wages which , compared to the Saudi offer that would have quadrupled his salary would not get it done.

This is is last year as a Red - we should all enjoy him while we can.

That’s weird with Robertson seemingly going nowhere and being fairly durable I would have thought he’d want to try to start for a smaller club somewhere. But judging from interviews/social media stuff I’ve seen he’s very well liked by his teammates so he’s a good guy to keep around

I don't think they get over 115m next year for him. I think his production will go down this year for you age and at a year older he just won't be at that high peak value.

Al-Ittihad were offering a premium to get Mo in time for the Club World Cup, which is being played in SA. Mo is possibly the most famous Muslim in the world. One of the clubs will be back next summer now that they know Mo’s price range (£1.5m/week).

Re-upping Tsimikas makes sense. He’s a quality back up and it’s hard to fill that role. But Robbo has 41k minutes on his legs since he broke in a decade ago.

The club has 2 young RBs in the pipeline behind Trent, but really nothing behind Robbo. There’s Owen Beck, who is aging out of prospect status, and Gyimah, who’s only 17 and very unpolished.

Robbo has been a machine, no doubt, but resigning Tsimikas sets the club up for a pricy transfer when they have to replace the Scot. I’m not banking on LFC getting another steal like they did form Hull.

The sort of False 6 Trent has been playing has the added benefit of saving some miles on Robbo. It’ll diminish his offensive contributions but will help keep him in the side.

It also reduces the caliber of player they need for his backup. You won’t have quite the same dropoff if you’re looking for more traditional left back production.

He’s also Dutch. He is physically incapable of mouthing that vague athlete media speak. There’s a reason why Belichick has never drafted a Dutch player.

This is as honest as you’ll ever hear a manager at a press conference. Klopp on Hendo leaving:

If Hendo would have performed, he’d have played. I thought it was important to talk openly. Hendo is a super guy but he is not great when he is not playing. He was my captain. I didn’t want to lock horns because he thought he [should] be starting. He took that to mean we didn’t want him here. I couldn’t tell him he would start and that is why it is better that he moved on.
Also, no Trent this weekend.

No Trent no Virgil and no South Americans at least to start. Hopefully they can take some points out of this one

Top teams find a way to get a smash and grab 3 pts out of today. Let’s see who they are.

Liverpool advance past Leicester City in the Carabao Cup winning 3-1. Goals by Gakpo, Szoboslai (Gerardesque) and Jota.

Could have been 10-1 given the chances which were somehow denied by crossbars, posts and clearances off the line.

Szoboslai’s goal was incredible. I thought he got too excited when he saw the space and stepped up to hit it but he absolutely nailed it. Jota’s goal was a beauty too but he was a little too casual about it to recognize what happened in real time. I thought it was an own goal

LFC announce they have finally found their new minority partner - Dynasty Equity, an NYC-based fund that specializes in professional sports investments. No firm details yet, but reported to be £80-160m buy in. LFC announced that this will go towards debt - COVID loans, Anfield expansion, new training center, Melwood reacquisition, and transfers. Last public accounting, LFC was carrying about £150m in debt - very manageable for a club of this size. But this helps clear the books for whatever comes next…or whatever has to happen to get the Anfield expansion project done now that their construction firm is bankrupt.

Official statement from the club on the PGMOL fiasco

Including the slightly ominous

“In the meantime, we will explore the range of options available, given the clear need for escalation and resolution.”

Full statement:

Liverpool Football Club acknowledges PGMOL’s admission of their failures last night. It is clear that the correct application of the laws of the game did not occur, resulting in sporting integrity being undermined.

We fully accept the pressures that match officials work under but these pressures are supposed to be alleviated, not exacerbated, by the existence and implementation of VAR.

It is therefore unsatisfactory that sufficient time was not afforded to allow the correct decision to be made and that there was no subsequent intervention.

That such failings have already been categorised as “significant human error” is also unacceptable. Any and all outcomes should be established only by the review and with full transparency.

This is vital for the reliability of future decision-making as it applies to all clubs with learnings being used to make improvements to processes in order to ensure this kind of situation cannot occur again.

In the meantime, we will explore the range of options available, given the clear need for escalation and resolution.

That sounds like challenging the outcome of the match. That would not be beneficial to anybody.

Many pundits have come out and called this the worst VAR error to date and used it as the shining example of why the system is broken. Whether it’s the worst or not is irrelevant. Every team has been affected by it and nobody else has escalated to that degree. Just fix it.

As I’m talking myself through it, there’s an argument to be made that while everyone has been affected by it, nobody else can stake a credible claim that it’s cost them the title. There were enough points shuffled around a couple of years ago that it may well have changed the title race. Maybe they’re still feeling salty about that.

This is exactly what I was advocating in the game thread. Unless the owners act, nothing will happen other than hollow apologies. They’ve had enough of the “oops, we’ll try to do better next time” and no ramifications to the officials. A compounded error here probably affected the outcome so call it out and make them do something. They won’t change the result but maybe they change the rule somehow to verbally say “onside, goal” instead of confirmed. Maybe they announce it like at Women's World Cup so the VAR can clarify if needed.

I think @coremiller hit on it in the VAR thread. The whole system needs to be built from the ground up by an outside party with input from match officials. It can’t be built by the match officials, especially the select group that think they’re part of the spectacle fans go to watch.

What they should really demand is for PGMOL to release some kind of audio/video from the 60 seconds before the Diaz fiasco. What the fuck were the four guys in the VAR room doing during that period? Because they sure as shit weren't actually watching the match.

Curtis Jones red card upheld. He gets a 3 game suspension.
Liverpool were going to go at this from intended use of VAR:

71973
Based on that, how can it be upheld? It never should have been upgraded to red in the first place. Instead he gets a nice, long still shot.

I don’t understand what I’m reading. Did the Asst VAR still confirm offsides and only the replay operator badgering him to get it right got them to admit they screwed up.

The issue is, VAR doesn't report onside/offside, they report whether the call on the field is correct. They reported it was correct because they thought the call on the field was a goal. That's why they said check complete (meaning, no reason to change the call).

Right but aren’t they watching the game live? How did they not know the call on the field? Were they watching cartoons? The audio is so clear here - giving the offsides.

Video and audio synced up

Seems like an easy fix to simply state what they are reviewing out loud or place a giant graphic on the . “Confirming on field ruling of a goal” so the referee could confirm or refute.

The only thing I can think of is the confusion about the flag being raised there. Shouldn’t the linesperson kept the flag down there?

He did. He was “allowed(?)” to score and then it was called back. That part was surprisingly called right

The team on the field did everything correctly (other than blowing what is one of the most difficult calls in all of sports, which is why we have VAR in the first place).

The dialogue seems clear as day to me. The assistant on the field says he’s delaying while the play unfolds, then tells Hooper he was off after the goal. Hooper blows for offside and the check begins. Even if England wasn’t watching the screen when the cut to the assistant with his flag raised was shown, he had all of the verbal information he needed to know what he was checking. There was an inexcusable lapse in attention coupled with a rickety communication system.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp wants the Premier League game against Tottenham to be replayed after Luis Diaz's goal was wrongly disallowed by the video assistant referee.

VAR Darren England and assistant Dan Cook did not overrule when Diaz was flagged offside at 0-0 on Saturday.
Liverpool lost 2-1 thanks to a 96th-minute own goal from Joel Matip.

"Something like this never happened, so that is why I think a replay is the right thing to do," said Klopp.
I love Klopp but no way they replay the match.
