Jesus. The price for Watson will be absolutely insane.
No kidding ... I kept looking at the tweet to see whether it was fakeWell that drives up Watson’s price to like 13 first rounders
And, it must be said, a great deal by the usually inept Lions. Goff isn't likely to make a difference in their playoff chances next year, but that's a haulThis is a huge mistake by the Rams.
Was totally expecting to see it was AdamSchifter or something. Maybe he’s wrong about the terms. It makes no sense. No kidding ... I kept looking at the tweet to see whether it was fake
Today, at leastIs this the longest thread title in SoSH history?
Absolutely. Stafford wanted out, so that should have canceled much of DET's leverage. I guess we'll get to see just how much of Goff's success with having McVay in his ear the whole time. And, it must be said, a great deal by the usually inept Lions. Goff isn't likely to make a difference in their playoff chances next year, but that's a haul
Either way he holds the record. Is this the longest thread title in SoSH history?
I mean why call it “Stafford dealt for Goff and picks” when you can put all the details in title? Is this the longest thread title in SoSH history?
He's still writing his thread title for the Mookie dealEither way he holds the record.
There is that, yes.Well that drives up Watson’s price to like 13 first rounders
Lions are about to embark on a long rebuild. You take the picks, Goff's deal will expire before they're ready. This seems like paying extra to get rid of Goff, right?
Probably the only way to make it work for the Rams though I'm not sure why Detroit would want Goff to be perfectly honest. He feels pretty bust-y to me.
I think they should have traded Stafford for less and started fresh at QB.
If you are punting the next few years I guess, I can see the desire to add as many 1st as possible. But Goff isn't cheap and he stinks, thats a lot to take on for an extra 1st rounder.Lions are about to embark on a long rebuild. You take the picks, Goff's deal will expire before they're ready.
I was listening to the Athletic football podcast and Robert Mays said that McVay definitely has some of that John Gruden arrogance about him when it comes to the QB vs the system.I've never seen a HC turn on his QB so quickly. McVay's behavior is similar to what you'd see from a scorned lover. It seems like -- with whatever happened -- he could have used another month or so to cool down before making such a decision. I'm sure that the behind-the-scenes details will leak out soon.
They saved 42.5M in guaranteed money to Goff. The Rams are badly run. Their trade for Ramsey was goofy and this is arguably worse.I get that you don't want to waste Donald's window, but this trade is bananas.
Goff is average. Stafford might be slightly beyond that. Spending two firsts on this upgrade is odd as hell.
Goff has been disappointing for several years now under a top 5 QB contract, I do not think this was an emotional decision. I honestly don’t know what personal issue you are referring to, but as a football matter they had to explore a change.I've never seen a HC turn on his QB so quickly. I would object to the characterization of “rebuild”.
Agreed. In looking at Goff's contract, the price is now completely understandable. He can't be cut until after '22 (which you mentioned); cap hits of 34.9 and 32.9 is a hefty burden. It's possible that the Lions draft a QB and let the rookie battle it out with Goff.Part of what the Rams are paying for is to get off the Goff contract - the trade leaves them with $22mn in dead money this year, but gets them off $43mn of guaranteed salary. The Lions look like they end up with Goff for the next 2 years with a ~$28mn cap number and then they can move on. Considering what the Texans gave up to get off one year and $16mn of Brock Osweiler, it's probably not crazy to say it was something more than a third rounder just to get rid of Goff. Even if you just call it a third to get rid of Goff, 2 first for an above average starting QB in a league where Sam Bradford goes for a 1 and a 4 is maybe steep but hardly crazy.
Toughness is overrated. Being able to read coverage after 5 seasons in the league isn't. Goff is a not good QB that if you surround him with great weapons and scheme guys wide open can elevate to mediocre. DET will probably play him for a year or two before cutting him for their QB of the future.I mean Goff showed his toughness playing hurt and winning against the Seahawks in the playoffs this year, no? So I'm interested to see how he performs under the new staff this year. Change of scenery could do him good. It is certainly better than what his situation in LA would be going forward.
Technically, it's been 2 disappointing seasons, as Goff signed his massive extension in 2019. Of course, there's no way to prove whether or not McVay's decision was partly emotional, but it's rare to see a coach not play it neutral/boring during the end-of-season media sessions. For leverage sake, it provided no benefit for the HC be so transparent about his lack of commitment to his starting QB. It seemed as though McVay just couldn't ... hold it in? Of course, 2 or so weeks ago, the LA media reported that McVay and Goff needed "marriage counseling," ... but perhaps that was just typical hyperbolic bullshit. The post-trade reports may be telling.Goff has been disappointing for several years now under a top 5 QB contract, I do not think this was an emotional decision. This is where I'm at. The extension was a huge mistake, and they have a narrow window to win it all right now. McVay supported Goff throughout his career, but it became obvious this year that it was going nowhere. It's hard to know what the future effects of giving up all these first rounders will be for the team, but they now have a decent QB and the flexibility to restock their roster for the next 1-2 years. As a fan, I'm happy. When we're 3-13 for 4 straight years later this decade, I'll watch something else. They saved 42.5M in guaranteed money to Goff.
Also I think you are both overrating Goff and underrating Stafford.
Stafford is good, Goff is barely competent, even with an excellent OC/HC.
Edit- the most evidence that they are badly run is the Goff extension, which was terrible. Now they're using a 1st to clean it up.
Define "well run".Man, if DET can either draft a good QB this year, trade out and pick up a bunch more future picks, or tank this season (or some combo of these), they could really set themselves up for a great future that would start at the end of Rodgers run in GB.
We live in a works where DET and CLE might be well run organizations. We are through the looking glass.
I think half of that definition is recognizing the worthlessness and damage of just treading water which is something that DET has become synonymous with for at least 20 years.Define "well run".
They got draft picks for a QB. One step in the right direction.
