Like not many boxers ever have one punch power against guys at this level. Ortiz wasn’t hurt or worn out.
I dont think fury can replicate the focus and training camp of the first fight.I had Ortiz winning every round but 1 and then he gets smoked like that one 1 punch.
Wilder is something. I still think he loses to Fury in a rematch.
If anything he overcommits to his punches, so he's not leaving power on the table. I suppose he'd get cleaner looks with better footwork and could hurt people worse if he threw more combinations, but I think proper technique might sap his power a tiny bit. Also, imagine if Wilder could actually box. He'd probably kill someone.
Great points. I just feel like it'd be worth it to not put himself in a position where a life changing punch has to happen. Like relying on a clutch life-ending knockout will catch up to him eventually. If anything he overcommits to his punches, so he's not leaving power on the table. Yeah, I'm not sure what advice I'd give him if I were his trainer though. Definitely fix the footwork and stay off the ropes. If he ever does get caught, it'll be because he overthrew his right or hook and left himself exposed, but how do you go about changing that given his historic track record? I think the power would still be there with less windup and follow through, but I'm not sure I'd tell him to change it.Great points. Yup! It’ll be fun. Ruiz went way up in weight and Joshua is looking trim. Clearly, he thinks he’s going to have a speed advantage over Ruiz’s power. Normally I eschew the whole boxers should lift nonsense, but Joshua’s muscle gain legit seemed to make it difficult to protect his middle. Of course, Ruiz wasn’t really tagging him up the middle so much as catching him with big overhands, but maybe Joshua also feels stamina was an issue.Anyone else watching Joshua-Ruiz today?
Curious - why do you think boxers shouldn’t lift? I could see that for people managing weight, but I don’t understand why not as heavyweights.Yup! It’ll be fun. No no, I’m generally saying boxers shoild lift. I think building limit strength, muscular endurance and starting/speed strength for boxers through weight training is essential for all weight classes.Curious - why do you think boxers shouldn’t lift? I know very little about boxing, so not saying you’re wrong - just am interested.
Got it - that makes more sense. Thank you!No no, I’m generally saying boxers shoild lift. I think building limit strength, muscular endurance and starting/speed strength for boxers through weight training is essential for all weight classes.
I think Joshua is the rare example of lifting gone wrong. He seems like he focused too much on hypertrophy and got bulked to the point where his chest and biceps were too big for him to protect his middle. It also might’ve affected his stamina. I think him trimming down after his first loss indicates his camp felt the same.
I’m glad you’re watching. I feel weird supporting any efforts to whitewash Saudi shittiness, but, you know, it’s a good card...Got it - that makes more sense. Thank you!
I have an English friend who was sooo fired up for it. He was going to come over and watch tonight, and suggested watching “one night” (I love listening to Tyson). He got the flu and didn’t come, but I was interested enough to get a trial subscription to DAZN to watch.I’m glad you’re watching. Maybe there’s no alcohol in the building, but I have too many friends that’ve partied in SA to believe that. Sounds like more marketing.I have an English friend who was sooo fired up for it. Hunter had a nice comeback (but not sure it’s enough). And I was just saying to my wife I can’t believe there are so many Brits and no alcohol when the announcers said that.
Haha I hung out with an al Saud and a Saudi billionaire once and they drank like fish. They were all like, “it’s ok for us to drink, but regular Saudis can’t handle it.”Maybe there’s no alcohol in the building, but I have too many friends that’ve partied in SA to believe that. Lol. Speaking of fish, apparently salmons in asses is a fetish in the party scene there and Dubai.Haha I hung out with an al Saud and a Saudi billionaire once and they drank like fish. They were all like, “it’s ok for us to drink, but regular Saudis can’t handle it.”
That just went in a direction I never would have predicted.Lol. Speaking of fish, apparently salmons in asses is a fetish in the party scene there and Dubai.
Also, this ring announcer looks like a bouncer outside a low end porno theater.
Probably a dumb question, but will Ruiz going up in weight impact his his hand speed? I think I remember reading something from the last fight that mentioned that even though he is a fatty, Ruiz had a hand speed advantage that made a difference on the inside. I guess his lack of reach compared to Joshua is part of that too.Yup! It’ll be fun. Ruiz went way up in weight and Joshua is looking trim. Clearly, he thinks he’s going to have a speed advantage over Ruiz’s power.
That was so impressive.Pacheco can really fight. Wow. 18 years old.
He said just now he was 268 in the morning with his sombrero on. Hand speed isn’t too affected by weight gain. That obviously changes after a certain point, but speed is mostly genetics + balance.Probably a dumb question, but will Ruiz going up in weight impact his his hand speed? Do you really believe he gained 15 pounds in a few hours? I could see it if he was cutting water weight or whatever, but I don’t think that was the case here.He said just now he was 268 in the morning with his sombrero on. I’ve fluctuated that in a day in the low 200s from bedtime to a late breakfast.Do you really believe he gained 15 pounds in a few hours? I could see it if he was cutting water weight or whatever, but I don’t think that was the case here.
maybe it was a heavy sombrero
Odds. Clairvoyant. Where’s your money going?I was just about to ask for the odds...I’m like clairvoyant tonight.
When I wrestled (at 101 lbs in high school) I could sometimes gain 8 pounds in a day, but it was almost all water. I guess someone 3x the size could do 15 lbs without water weight. Still seems crazy to do on the day of a big fight like this.I’ve fluctuated that in a day in the low 200s from bedtime to a late breakfast.
Wow. Didn’t realize Joshua was such a heavy favorite. No pun meant.
Hahaha I have literally no idea who will win this.Odds. Clairvoyant. Where’s your money going?
Ok. Saudi anthem next?Hahaha I have literally no idea who will win this.
I can only predict meaningless things.
Yes?Ok. Saudi anthem next?
Shame.Yes?
According to celebrity net worth (which is probably not too accurate:Shame.
I wonder what Buffer is getting to do this one fight. Think he clears a mil or just like 500k?
Depends on location. I feel like in third party countries it’s common. Usually, if it’s in one of the fighter’s home countries they’ll have 2-1 or 3-0. There are also only so many countries that can boast world class judges, so...Is it normal to have one judge from each country of the competitors? And one neutral?
Given some of the decisions discussed in this thread, I laughed when I read this. There are also only so many countries that can boast world class judges, so...
How much do you think that cut will affect him?Ruiz is straight fat but still looks quick. If Joshua is smart and disciplined he just dances around him for 5-6 rounds assuming Ruiz tired out from the extra weight.
Lol. Yeah. That’s fair. You just kinda need the lengthy resume to get to judge these kinda fights, and then once you’re in, it’s pretty hard to be dislodged.Given some of the decisions discussed in this thread, I laughed when I read this.
Looks like it’ll bleed throughout, but not gush. Doesn’t seem to be bothering him now. I’d just worry about him becoming over aggressive. How much do you think that cut will affect him?
Similar situation for Joshua?Looks like it’ll bleed throughout, but not gush. Doesn’t seem to be bothering him now. I’d just worry about him becoming over aggressive.
Yeah none of these look major, but it’s so early in the fight for cuts.Similar situation for Joshua?
I loved that.Vaseline sponsoring the corner cam is brilliant.
Ruiz is starting to get inside. I still feel like Joshua doesn’t have the discipline or modesty not to engage in a slugfest as Ruiz starts getting closer.Joshua looks good.
Isn’t it strange to think the fat guy wants the fight to go longer?Ruiz is starting to get inside. I still feel like Joshua doesn’t have the discipline or modesty not to engage in a slugfest as Ruiz starts getting closer.
