The circa 2013 version of myself would not believe this thought
Seriously. How soon we forget the days of Darius Butler and Jonathan Wilhite, not to mention the CB version of Devin McCourty. Talib was our knight in shining armor when he arrived on the scene.

Since it seems rather unlikely that BB suddenly learned something new about how to scout/coach the position over the last few years, the lesson here is that this is a crapshoot, and we should not expect the recent run of success to continue.

The rookie Pro Bowl CB version of McCourty?

It everyone is a Revis Island. The front seven plays a lot into how the backfield can succeed.
I was thinking the same thing. Rookie DMC was a stud, fell off for a year or so, and has been a key defensive player for years now. We have plenty of examples of ass in the secondary to avoid listing him.

Here
Why the hell would we want Blake Bortles? He’s fucking garbage and will cost way too much as a backup.

I'm intrigued by Bortles but how do you fix this?
I mean a lot of that is bad footwork, much of it brought on by pressure/happy feet. Good coaching, and a good O-Line could fix that hypothetically.

He has potential, he's probably better than plenty of backups in the league. Also he'd be incredibly cheap likely since JAX is going to pay him $7M w/ offset, so unless some team makes him an offer above that (I really really doubt it) his new team can sign him for the minimum and he gets the same take home pay. He's definitely worth it at the minimum considering some teams are starting guys who haven't been significantly better than him over the last 2-3 years.

Phew. Year 3 on the team, he has ability, and he’s actually caught some passes from Tom.
Yeah, great news. I was hoping for two years but at least things are starting to look up for our receivers.

Now let's draft a TE in the first round, a quality wideout in rounds 2-4, and Hunter Renfroe on day 3 as Edelman's heir apparent. And hope we get something out of Josh Gordon

Really meh on Dorsett. Hope that doesn't mean the Patriots don't believe they'll be able to get 2 receivers in FA/trade. Because I don't like Dorsett as WR3.
The guy produces when given an opportunity and he knows the system. I am happy he’s back. We’re still far from done here.

Never worrying about this again. House money and after 19 years, you learn.

Fascinating though. Granted they don’t try much, and almost never with high picks, but there is zero confidence they can successfully address this position in the draft. And that confidence level is fully justified. Fucking astounding when you think about it.

Curious why people are concerned about a team signing Jonathan Jones.
Wouldn't a 2nd rd pick be great value for your 3rd/4th CB? He played well in the playoffs but I'd rather have JC Jackson and the recent track record is NE has been able to grow CBs on trees. Better than just about any other position.
Stability, for one. I remember a period of time pre-Seattle Super Bowl when NE couldn’t get off the field due to lackluster CB play. They’ve hit on some in recent years and that’s a huge positive but I prefer the certainty of a viable cheap known quantity here. Who knows when the current magic touch with drafting CB ends? CB may be the best and deepest unit but, given the amount of inexperience about to be added to the team due to last year’s injured draft class and the presumed large group of draftees this year, it’s desirable to have as many young vets as possible to give the defense continuity and flexibility.

I can't argue that a 2nd rounder isn't excellent value, but good CB's are a cornerstone to a defense today and we're in a run right now. If we want to get past KC and other super charged offenses, we'll need as many competent corners as we can get this season. Injuries always pop up and I like the idea of great known depth at this position. It's one of BB's trump cards. A few people referenced DMac's rookie season and that story is a good reason why I'd keep Jones. DMac's 2nd year and beyond at corner was disappointing - it came out of nowhere really - and Jones is a nice hedge against potential regression elsewhere at CB. Competition at the position is a very good thing.

Well hey, at least re-signing Dorsett proves that we got real value for trading away Jacoby Brissett.

I'd compare it to what we got for trading Garoppolo, except nobody really knows what we got in that trade, and at any rate we still have the Bears' 2nd rounder next month before we even know names.
That was written before the draft finished. Here’s an update via the Glob (it may’ve updated since then, but I’m done googling for the night).
So, as of now, the trade return for Garoppolo looks like this: second and third-round picks in 2019, (Christian) Sam, and about 25 percent of what it took to move up and get (Duke) Dawson. The other way to look at it is: They gave up Garoppolo and pick No. 63 to get a 2019 second, a 2019 third, Dawson, and Sam.
Basically, they turned the two 4th round picks into Sam and a 2019 3rd round pick (I think).

You are prepared to evaluate the JG trade after one season? In which he did not play because he was injured?

I don't have zero confidence. I think it's a hard position to project league-wide, but I don't think the Patriots have a worse chance than anyone else. Their historical record isn't great, but that strikes me as more small sample size than anything. Weirdly the Pats have two of the best 7th-round WR picks of the past 20 years, which just reemphasizes how fluky the draft can be.

Also they drafted CBs like they were trying to lose for like a decade and now have a solid hit rate. There's no reason to think that they lack the ability to draft a useful receiver. Wouldn't mind if they hedged their bets and grabbed one via trade and one or two in the draft.

Parris Campbell could be an intriguing WR option in the draft, 4.32 40 but didn't really run deep routes at OSU operating out of the slot instead. If anyone has a good scouting report on him it would be Schiano.
Reading he has a 3rd rd grade, NE just so happens to have plenty of 3rd rd picks to take a flier on him.

Stugotz, Golic and Wingo on their knees worshipping BBs approach to FA and roster construction. Blake Bortles is going to be a star reclamation project!

Hard to evaluate that trade anyway since 98.5 says that Cleveland offered us 11 first round picks, but Bill spitefully traded him elsewhere.
I’m reluctant to credit these reports and would never downgrade them for it even if true. JG provided insurance and it’s pretty clear to me they wanted to keep him anyway. Some people have trouble grasping that while you never want to use your insurance, you have to pay for it.

Chris Hogan is having talks with the Giants. It makes sense as his wife Ashley is a podiatrist on LI and their home is here in Huntington.
Of course they're a dumpster fire and if he goes there I hope he makes them overpay.

On WR front, rumors here that WA about to do something big, in trade market. Spec is AJ Green, with Gruden Cincy connection.

I said yesterday that the Pats should look at Harris due to his 3 cone drill and here he comes for a visit.

Maurice Harris has also been used a bit on kickoff and punt returns so this could be our Patterson replacement.

Then there are his hands, route running skills and intelligence.

Gruden called him one of his smartest players. And he’s a good, self made guy. No pedigree.

Has had issues staying healthy. I’m not going to make much of his failure to shine in awful Redskins WR situation. QB situation was abysmal for a good chunk of last year too.

A guy with the ability to run good routes AND has good hands would seem like the type of guy that Brady would love to throw to.

Picking up Ellington and Harris could be one of those really good upside deals. If the problem with them was 'catchable balls', their production could go up with a team that's good at scheming people into that position.

VIII Rings has lines out port and starboard, bow and stern. Whoever grabs the bait first gets pulled in.

That’s my sense. Not a criticism, just a definite feeling that the budget is what it is and they are all basically fungible to the Captain.
