Starting a new thread for injury news cause there's been a lot.

Kuraly had surgery and is back in the linup. Wearing a full facemask for 5-6 weeks. And looking pretty awful:

Cassidy says Patrice Bergeron, Zdeno Chara, Kevan Miller, and Urho Vaakanainen all skated this morning. Jake DeBrusk did not.

He adds that Bergeron could join the full group for practice on Wednesday. “Possibility” is there for a return thereafter. Chara is a bit further off.

Bergeron, Chara and Miller on ice for practice in regular jerseys (meaning they are cleared for contact).

Vaakanainen and DeBrusk also on ice, but no-contact for them.

The cavalry is coming.

If they're healthy on D, I really think they should be dressing 7. Their 7th defenseman is much better than their 12th forward

So, basically he's done for the year. That's two years in a row that injuries have curtailed his season, correct?

Well great. Hopefully this time off is enough for Tuukka to recover from his concussion.

Joe updated the tweet to 2 weeks. Apparently he fell leaving a team event Sunday night. He’ll basically miss the west coast trip, then maybe a couple games on the other end.

Did they say which thumb? Upper or lower hand on the stick? Makes a pretty big difference, I'd say.
upper

Pastrnak, who leads the club with 31 goals and 66 points, is a righthanded shot. As such, he grips the top of the stick with his left hand, the control hand, while the right hand, the power hand, is placed lower on the shaft. Both hands are essential, but it would seem he was fortunate not to injure his power hand — particularly since his trademark is his blistering slapper.

According to what's been reported on both local radio stations, he can potentially start skating again in 10 days, and he wil be "re-evaluated" in two weeks. It definitely doesn't sound like he's a sure bet to actually return in two weeks.

Would love to hear the story on how he fell. The team has basically released so much detail (11:30 p.m. on a Sunday night, walking back to his transportation after leaving a sponsor event with teammates, he apologize profusely to Sweeney, etc.), it's almost surprising they don't just come out and say "Yeah, he was shitfaced."

Wasn't there a similar situation many years ago where a Bruins player tripped over a curb or something like that after a night out and was injured to the point he missed games?

It was the John Grahame injury a few posts back. They said he fell off a curb. Story I always heard was he got dropped by some dude he was talking to while crossing the street. He was coming out of the Rack. A popular Bruins player hangout in the Thornton years. It’s now the Hard Rock if you know where that is. By the Millenium Hotel. Every time I went in there you’d see Joe and a couple other Bruins players in the roped off section.

Is it even a hot take to say he's their most valuable/irreplaceable player? Especially considering he's the best at the one thing this team is really bad at, shooting the puck into the net.

One silver lining might be that we'll get a decent sample size of someone else playing with Bergeron and Marchand. If they can find someone who fits there, it gives them a little more flexibility at the trade deadline, and just in general mixing up the lines. I really think Heinen is a good fit on that line. He's a really good forechecker and with him there, Bergeron and Marchand should get a bigger share of the shots, making up for Pasta's scoring a little bit.

I can’t think of any silver lining to this. Any team that they may have been talking to about a forward just jacked the price up. They’re going to have to claw to make the playoffs now.

Heinen has looked great on the 1st line, his possession game fits well and playing with those two has given him some room.
Where this will hurt the most is on the PP as Pasta is a real weapon from the top of the circles in, Ovie-esque in that position. His 15PPG lead the league and 43% of his points come on the PP.

I wonder if they give Senyshyn a look at some point. He obv has struggled in AHL but perhaps he is one of those players that will produce better at higher levels. DeBrusk didn't light the world on fire in the AHL with just 49pts in 74 games. At some point they need to see what they have with him. He has the right size, speed and is a RH shot. I'm sure he will be a negative in the defensive zone but this team is going to need someone that can put the puck in the net.

You're absolutely right that the PP is the biggest loss here. Their PP1 is completely built around him just like Washington's. Donato is a legitimate sniper too, but he's a lefty so they can't just drop him into Pasta's spot. It's probably a crazy idea, but maybe Chara? Otherwise they need to change their tactics.

They’ll be making a decision on the Providence call up tonight or tomorrow. Could also sign Lee Stempniak who is still around on a PTO.

I I have a vague recollection that someone at the Globe reported that Grahame walked out of a bar, decided to try his hand at directing traffic, and got into a confrontation with someone who didn't appreciate that. Can't find any mention of it online though - am I just imagining that story?

I’ve heard several slight variations of basically the same story. Everything from he hit a guys car and the guy got out and one punched him, to him and a guy walking in the intersection had words and there was a brief altercation that he lost. But yeah all basically that he was wrecked and thought it would be a good idea to try to direct traffic.

Krejci in Pasta’s spot worked well last night. Hurts PP2 a bit, but PP1 looked almost equal to what they are when Pasta is in.

One thing I think it will help is it forces Marchand to be more of a scorer and less playmaker. He’s been awesome setting people up, but with Pasta out or on the 2nd line, it forces him to score more. I think we saw a bit of that last night.

As for Heinen, I’d like to see how he does on the west coast trip. Chicago is really awful on defense.

I wonder if KPD will use snark quotes around "thumb injury" they way he does for Tuukka's "personal issues."

Karson Kuhlman gets the call from Providence.

Profiles as a grinder, but having a decent year offensively- 12-13=25 in 50 games.

He also has 16 of those points in his last 20 games.

I was a real fan of his watching him in the preseason. I did not watch him at all in college hockey, so that was my first exposure to him. He’s been on fire lately, so definitely seems the most deserving.

As for Donato, last I checked he was down on Providence’s 3rd line. Hope he gets some real run down there this year as I think it will be really good for him.

I said before the season that Kuhlman didn’t have much of a chance to be an NHL player but I was wrong. He’s been more productive in the AHL than he was his last NCAA season. Which is pretty crazy.

I’m curious if he was just in an unfavorable situation (usage, QoT, etc), if they fixed something in his game, or if he’s just gotten dramatically better in one year. Or some combination of those.

I was looking for advanced stats on him, but was unsuccessful. From what I remember, he was a bulldog and seemed to dominate possession in the preseason. He had great physical two way game, despite his limited stature. That seemed to wane early this year in providence, but I would guess his possession numbers and elevation to more critical roles has helped. That being said, I am purely speculating here. I have a very limited sample size.

I am very interested in how they both use him, and how he would play if given the chance.

So it was worse than advertised?
I give them credit for downplaying it. They even had him go out there on skates the morning of the deadline in front of reporters. You don’t want the other teams that you’re negotiating with to think you need to make a trade.

Sorry, mobile so no link, but I'm hearing Kevan Miller has been downgraded to "week to week" or some such, after getting bad news on his UBI. Maybe time to think about a UV call up?

There probably all set for the next 3 since they’re all at home. They’ll need to call someone up for the three game trip to Pittsburgh, Columbus, and Winnipeg next week.

They still have Kampfer on the roster, which impacts their ability to use an emergency recall to bring a D up from Providence. They’d have to use one of the 4 regular recalls to bring up a D.

Edit: And they really only have 3 since Stempniak will burn 1 when they bring him up.

If Vaak plays 8 more NHL games this season he isn't exempt from the expansion draft. Given he is just starting to find his offensive game I find it highly unlikely they bring him up unless they lose several D.

I really don't recall the play that sent him out. I wonder if its a surgically repaired shoulder. Moore has played well enough, and offers higher level offense, but I have an irrational like for Miller and would hate to see the team without him at playoff time.

He got hit with a shot, IIRC. I suspect the MRI just confirmed that the bone was broken, wherever it was.

MoJo not practicing today and wasn’t there for the team picture. I assume we’ll get some kind of update after practice.
