Hockey East resumes conference play tonight with a full slate of games, including #7 Providence College visiting Boston College. Although BC is 0-8 OOC this season (yes, you read that correctly, including a loss to Bentley and a sweep by ASU), they have a 6-1-2 mark IN conference, in 2nd place in HE.

BC hasn’t won a OOC game in over 2 years. Only chance this year is the Beanpot.

York may be entering Parker territory at the end of his reign. Minus the rampant sexual assaults and general loss of institutional control, of course.

Quinnipiac fan /ST holder here. Team is back after a down year, with a strong group of Frosh, some vets stepping up (Tufto, Priskie, Fortunato) and two pretty good goalies. Ranked 6th now, split with UMass in home and home earlier in year. Beat Dartmouth last night after a slow start. Should be a good one against Hahvahd tonight.

I don't know if anyone else attended (or watched) #8 NU vs. #1 UMass at Matthews Arena tonight but holy hell was that some kind of a game. NU wins 2-1 in OT on a sweet goal from freshman Tyler Madden (make sure you watch the whole video for the celebration). Sophomore Cayden Primeau saved 45/46(!!) UMass shots.

Never expected a repeat after losing Gaudette, Sykura, and Stevens. It helps that it's a down year for the other Boston schools, but NU teams in the past have found ways to lose to BU and BC teams having down years.

It feels so goddamn good to beat both BU and BC in back to back years on the way to the Beanpot. They're not what they once were but NU is firmly on the map as a program now. And to do it after losing that top line? This is not the old NU anymore.

If they can snag an NCAA bid next month I'll be thrilled with this year.

Still dreaming of the Frozen Four some day... they should have a chance as long as Primeau is in net. He is something special. I hope the Habs trade his rights.

Any idea if Primeau is coming back next year? Madden looks like he'll be a huge contributor over the next few years as well.

Wow. Nice to drop the wait time between titles from 30 years to 1. This used to be the longest day on the sports calendar, another year with no title and 12 months wait for the next shot. This feeling is way, way better.

Loved that game last night.

And I'm happy to see they actually have championship hats available this year. I looked for a while last year after they won and was unable to find any championship gear.

Madden is the best freshman I've seen at NU. Only competition in my eyes is Roy and Madden has an edge, confidence, and polish that Roy didn't have. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being the best professional forward from NU from the last decade (him or Gaudette). If he wasn't still so small I could see him signing with Vancouver this summer. Think he'll stick around another year or 2.

Primeau is going to be a 3, probably 4 year player, but Madigan did say post game last night that Primeau has been so good that Montreal might come calling sooner. I think he's better served here for next year and probably the next year, and I think that will win out at the end of the day.

Davies will sign with NJD this summer. Shea may sign with Chicago too. But between Harris, Kislin, Madden, and Primeau they have a strong core with a really highly regarded recruiting class coming in. Next year might be too soon but if Madden and especially Primeau are here for 2020-2021, look out.

The only way BC or BU will make the NCAA tournament is if one wins the Hockey East tournament and gets the automatic conference courtesy bid.

As of right now, BC is 35th in the pairwise rankings, BU is 27th. There is almost no way they'll make it into the top 13-15 or so. Their only ticket - is to stomp through the HE playoffs. And only one can make it in - if UMass wins that tourney , or Northeastern, it's all over.

Northeastern is 13th. There's a shot - provided that some bottom feeder teams don't win their conference playoffs and knock them down the Pairwise ladder.

I got a hat last year, have a friend on campus who picked up a couple for me, been wearing it all day. The black/gray 2019 hat is way cooler.
The one in that link doesn’t look like the ones the team was wearing last night. I ordered one anyway but I hope it’s the black and grey version. If it’s not I might take a trip over to campus looking for it.

Ugh, just clicked the link and that's NOT the same same hat. BU is one of my clients, probably head over to the NU bookstore on Thursday to look for swag. It'll cleanse my soul after a day on Comm Ave. Anyone who wants in hit me with a PM and I'll do my best to hook you up.

I don't need a hook up as much as recon - if they have the black & grey at the bookstore let me know please. :)

I'll let you know if I see 'em.
Did you get over to the bookstore by any chance?

I got my hat in the mail and it is just like the picture on the bookstore website, which is to say NOT the two tone one the players had on the ice. It is a nice hat and I wore it out of the house this morning - and then immediately took it off and put on my winter hat because it is friggin COLD this morning.

bump for the 3rd period of Hockey East Championship. NU Huskies are safely in, but are beating BC by one after 2 periods. It would be funny if the 11-win Eagles, entering the HE PO's, could qualify. 4 straight wins to capture HE would do it of course. BC is currently 34th in Pairwise, even after 3 straight wins, even below American Int'l.

Game is on NESNPlus

Dammit, Hutsko hurt along the boards after a backhand rush to the net. Stretcher called for. Looks very bad. 1st minute 3rd period.

Congrats to Laser Show, HAG, and the other NU fans.

BC didn't deserve to be in the NCAA Tournament this year.

Good fight at the end though.

Seeing 2 NU banners on the Garden rafters is not something I'd ever thought I'd see. Ending BU and BC's seasons too? Damn these are the golden years for NU hockey.

I certainly never would have expected it.

If the committee sticks to the bracket, I think NU will be in either Manchester or Providence. I'm a little concerned, though, that they might want to swap Cornell to Allentown to try to prop up attendance there, and if that happens, NU basically has to go along with them (otherwise Cornell would end up with a first round matchup with Quinnipiac).

Based on a straight bracket, this is how I would see it:
Fargo, ND:
1. St. Cloud
8. Denver
9. Ohio State
16. AIC

Allentown, PA:
2. Minnesota-Duluth
7. Quinnipiac
10. Arizona State
15. Bowling Green

Manchester/Providence
3. Minnesota State
6. Northeastern
11. Cornell
14. Providence

Providence/Manchester
4. Massachusetts
5. Clarkson
12. Notre Dame
13. Harvard

PC is not the host of the Providence regional, so they don't have to be there. If I were drawing up the tournament, they wouldn't be, because I don't want to penalize Minnesota State by making them play a sort-of road game in their opener. I don't know what the committee will do. I don't think there's a particular reason to favor putting UMass in either eastern regional, I think they're both a similar distance (and both a drive) from Amherst (Google Maps says 1:58 to Manchester vs. 1:38 to Providence).

I'm kinda thinking it'll be a straight bracket too. Fingers crossed NU stays east. I don't think I can make Allentown happen.

On another board I follow, someone raised the idea of Ohio State moving to Allentown (single swap with Arizona State).

if i’m not mistaken, last year (or was it 2017?) Providence got home ice even though their seeding didn’t merit it.

And Laser Show, your ignoring Harvard among Boston’s hockey powers is duly noted. What are you, The Boston Globe?

Hard to remember those ECAC teams sometimes ;)

The same thing happened again re: PC.

Minn State vs. PC, NU vs. Cornell in Providence
St. Cloud vs. AIC, Denver vs. OSU in Fargo
Duluth vs. Bowling Green, Quinnipiac vs. ASU in Allentown
UMass vs. Harvard, Clarkson vs. Notre Dame in Manchester

Happily for me, ND and NU are on completely opposite sides of the bracket (not meeting until the championship game). Now watch them both lose in the first round.

Ugh. Was hoping to avoid Providence in our bracket, they seem to have NU's number the past couple of seasons. (edit: 1-5-1 over past three seasons, so yeah, they do)

A NCAA win would be nice, break a 36 year drought on that front. Might be heading down to catch this one.

How long has it been without any of the big 6 (BC, BU, North Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan, Michigan State) in the tourney?

Wow, how about AIC knocking off St. Cloud? Greatest upset in college hockey history?

If it was anybody but St. Cloud, I might agree with you, but you might say that the Huskies have a history.

Actually, just had another one brought to my attention: Holy Cross over Minnesota. I think that was bigger because Minnesota was playing at home. That was another 16-over-1 game.

It’s a huge one but Holy Cross knocking off Minnesota in 2006 might have been bigger especially since the landscape had not changed like it has today.

NU losing to NoDak in 2016 was whatever. They went undefeated in something like 21 of their last 22, won the program's first trophy in nearly 30 years, and ran into a juggernaut that ended up winning the national title. We were all just happy to be there.

Last year I think they left something on the table. Gaudette-Sikura- Stevens-Davies-Cecere-Primeau may go down as the best six NU has ever put on the ice at the same time. A Hobey winner, the best line in the nation, 4 NHL draft picks, 3 All-Americans, and a guy who will probably go down as the best goalie in program history. They could have beaten Michigan with a little better showing that day in Worcester.

Today they're back and arguably better. Primeau is better. Davies is better. Gone are 8-9-21 but what's left is a more balanced attack (if much less potent). Program record in wins. Both the Beanpot and the Hockey East trophy for the first time since 1988. Making a Frozen Four is the next step this program needs to take and they can do it.

Berlin
This is a low-content post, but I’m hoping:

1. I can find the game to watch from Berlin.
2. I can manage to stay awake for the whole thing.
3. And most importantly, my streak of watching Northeastern hockey losses on television, comes to an end tonight.

Let’s go Huskies!
