So when the first season of the AAF kicks off tonight, the ball won’t be kicked but will be placed at the 25, with one team on offense and the other team on defense. After each score and at the start of each half, that’s how the game will proceed.

If the team that just scored trails by 17 or more points or if the team that just scored trails by any amount with fewer than five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, that team can choose to try to convert a fourth-and-12 play from its own 28. If the team gains 12 or more yards in that one play, it keeps possession. If it doesn’t, the other team takes possession.

Somehow my co-workers talked me into doing AAF Fantasy Football. So I will be paying more attention to this than I should.

As a uniform fan, I'm hoping to find one to get before extinction

If nothing else, that replay will be shown on every network. Guess they don't have a rule on hits to the head.

The play looks like high quality college ball. This isn't bad.
They're looking to make this a developmental league for the NFL; if any of these players get a second look in the NFL due to standing out in this league, then good for them/I'm all for it.

Well, Atlanta scored the first points in AAF history.

Younghoe Koo. The answer to the trivia question that will be asked for the next thousand years.

Sure, it will probably fail, but it is way better than I expected it to be

Is this all NFL rules?
Mostly. Key differences are no kickoffs, no extra point kicks, and only five can blitz.

Only one possession each in OT from 10 yard line and the game can end in a tie in regular year.

35 second play clock.

It depends how you define fail. If the NFL wants to support this as a developmental league, it could stick around. As a stand alone entity, it has no chance.
Announcers have mentioned this point several times ... which makes me think that the NFL, at least initially, is invested to some degree

Mike Martz coaching (LOL), after another Rams-Patriots SB ,where Belichick is still SB champ.
Martz has the face of a woman who plays canasta.
Game on free stream on the league page.

And apparently there is "illegal defense" which is half the distance to the goal and a first down (maybe automatic, maybe not)

15 yards.

Can’t blitz from more than two yards outside the farthest offensive linemen from the center or something like that.

Not to mention how he mocked the Rams for hiring McVay

Martz must have eaten a full-pound shitburger last week

It makes a good deal of sense, as the NFL is the only one of the pro leagues that doesn't have this. But just like AAA baseball, AHL hockey, and the G-League, it won't be broadcast on CBS, and the crowds will be relatively modest. But that should be okay.

Orlando got a TD on a catch no catch dispute where the replay official went back and forth on what to call. It was pretty cool to hear.

I feel like this may be a kicker's tryout league more than anything right now. It's better than I expected, but mostly I think kickers will be the big beneficiaries.

Cool to hear, but holy crap I hate that call. He pins the ball to the ground on the catch, then it immediately jumps up and out of his hands, never really having possession without the ground's help.

Yeah, she had it right the first time. But seeing how she got where she got is something refreshing.

I wonder if we might see, like with the other major sports leagues and the NFL had with NFL Europe, NFL teams with the ability to send a few guys to AAF for some more seasoning. Like, the Patriots had guys like Dawson, Sam, Berrios, Izzo who were hurt but are probably healthy enough now to play. Wouldn't it make sense to get them some reps in a spring league? Practice squad guys like Etling, too. You'd run the risk of injury, but it seems like it would be worth it, maybe not for a guy like Dawson but for the other guys I mentioned who are going to be fringe roster guys anyway.

I don’t think it’s bad at all. It’s watchable and CBS to their credit is producing it at a high level. It’s complementary to the big league and there’s room for it.

It can be a developmental league for players of course but it’s also a good laboratory for rule changes. I like the differences from the NFL rule book. (not grasping the parallel lines at each 10 yard line though?)

It would be a trip if this thing outrates the NBA game that’s on ABC right now.
