I think Bird ended up lucky, if he doesn't have a seizure, his victim is probably dead.

Still, his NBA career should be over. He needs to go play in Siberia or fall back on his almost Cal degree and get on with his life's work.

I understand the tax benefits, but a bit surprised that they aren't keeping him as AD salary filler.

He doesn't really make enough as filler and this opens a roster spot to sign someone to the MLE for 2 years. That will be better filler.

Awesome, thanks, makes sense.

I guess this also answers the question of how Danny intends to keep Smart.

Officially he's being entered into the NBA domestic violence program, so the contract can't be voided so far as I understand. The likely result of all this is that when he's eligible for reinstatement he's dealt to the Hawks for a top 58 protected draft pick that converts to an Arby's Gift Certificate when it fails to convey.

Didn't realize that McCann did a lengthy breakdown of Bird's situation back in September - https://www.si.com/nba/2018/09/13/jabari-bird-celtics-domestic-violence-assault-charges-arrest - found it an intereting summary of current NBA policies on DV.

Also didn't realize that BOS had kept him on the roster all this time hoping that the investigation would be finished and they could void his contract , saving Luxury Tax money.

Says something about their pursuit of AD.

Why couldn't Bos just waive Bird like the Hawks did?
He would still count for luxury tax purposes if the Celtics waived him, so they would owe his guaranteed salary plus luxury tax on that amount. Atlanta is way below the luxury tax line, so it can absorb Bird's salary without penalty. The Celtics sent enough cash to Atlanta to cover that salary, and maybe a little extra to compensate the Hawks for the trouble.

I have to say that Bird was a bit of a oncourt binkie of mine, in a root for a long shot kind of way. I hope the Celtics reach out to him and continue whatever aid, treatment, they might have been providing him after his arrest. I don't say this with a eye towards his professional career, but if being a part of the Celtics organization/family does mean something, I hope they do what they can for him - even if it is outside of the public eye.
