Ranking the Quarterbacks

1. Tom Brady is what it looks like when an elite quarterback remains healthy into the late stages of his career.
2. Russel Wilson has proven he can win in many different ways, with many different types of personnel. He's a great leader, and the most consistent winner besides Brady since he entered the NFL.
3. Drew Brees - The Saints were stuck at 7-9 for three years before great drafts got them multiple starters including Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara. Turning 40 and heartbreaking postseason losses probably are the only reasons he isn't #2.
4. Aaron Rodgers has broken both collarbones, but the knee injury last year seemed much worse than reported. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, and hope he stays away from more lower body/leg injuries. 35 years old, a rookie coach, and only one Super Bowl appearance. He has a lot left to prove.
5. Andrew Luck - 639 pass attempts, the shoulder looks good.
6. Pat Mahomes - 23 years old and coming off of a very consistent and most likely MVP season.
7. Jared Goff - MVP level start to this season, before fading in December.
8. Philip Rivers - Great season, but the playoffs showed what happens when their great defense or rushing attack fail to show up.
9. Ben Roethlisberger - Big Ben is in decline, and the other 2/3 of the triplets are all but gone from Pittsburgh.
10. Matt Ryan - Offensive Coordinator Turd Cutter returns to lead the most consistently average quarterback.
11. Matt Stafford - They need to find their own Turd Cutter to replace Cooter as offensive coordinator, so they can help Stafford finally reach his MVP potential (or get fired).
12. Cam Newton - Julius Pepper retired, Greg Olsen may retire, Thomas Davis was shown the door, and the owner hasn't ruled out Newton missing all of 2019. Hello Sunshine Lawrence!

Started this from a discussion in the Cowboys thread, and considering where Brady vs. Goff, and the uncertainty of Rodgers and other veterans rank among their peers right now. Add to this Deshaun Watson, Baker Mayfield, Carson Wentz, Dak Prescott, Mitch Trubisky, Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota, and Lamar Jackson as up and comers. Kirk Cousins, Andy Dalton, Derek Carr, Joe Flacco, Case Keenum, and...etc.

Once you pass Brady/Rodgers/Wilson/Brees it doesn't really matter (I guess Mahomes too, if he doesn't have a sophomore slump). There's not a massive difference between whoever the next best quarterback is and the next 10 or so after that.

Also, slight rant, but Luck isn't, never was, and never will be a top 5 QB. He can gun sling with the best of him but that Stanford education sure didn't buy him meaningful decision making in games. Easiest division in football and next to nothing to show for it. 73.4 rating in playoff games. He's a more athletic Joe Flacco. His rate stats are much more comparable with Andy Dalton and Matt Stafford and no one is arguing those guys are near the top. Guy gets waaaaaaaay too much reputation credit off of his draft status. He's not Manning 2.0.

Your rant is a little over the top and fueled by rage and maybe jealousy.

Luck has 4 playoff wins. According to my math, Dalton and Stafford have a total of 0 combined, in WAY more seasons. He's one playoff win behind Rivers. He's tied with Matt Ryan and he's got one more than Cam Newton. Andrew Luck is a great QB, one who took a team that was rebuilding to the playoffs and a win this very season, despite missing the entire 2017.

Luck is awesome and there are only a few teams who would rather have who they have over Luck.

All those teams that would love to have Luck better play indoors, because he fucking sucks when he plays outside. Well, maybe not fucking sucks, but average at best?

There's a reason he comes up small in the playoffs year after year. He has to go outside, and when he does, he loses. Badly.

In 2012, he lost at Baltimore, 24-9. Completed just over 50% of his passes, 0 td's, 1int, 51.85 rating.

In 2013, he puts up a monster game, at home, against KC 443 yards, 4tds (although he did throw 3 picks) and won that crazy shootout 45-44. But a week later, he has to go on the road, outdoors, and the Pats stomp all over him, he goes 20-41, 2tds', 4ints, 53.0 rating and they lose 43-22.

In 2014, he beats the Bengals in the wild card round, at home, throws for 376 yards and td. In the divisional round, he gets a win on the road at Denver, but the Indy defense did the real heavy lifting, shutting down Manning, and Indy won 24-13. Still, Luck threw his standard 2 interceptions (265 yards, 2tds, 76.2 rating). But then, it was back to New England for the AFCCG, and a 45-7 blowout, in which he went 12-33, 126 yards, 2ints and a 23.0 rating.

Then this year, they win at Houston 21-7 (again, the Indy defense did the heavy lifting), but of course, the roof was closed for the game, and he went for 222, 2td,1 pick, 88.3 rating. But, he had to go outside the following week at KC and of course, we all watched him suck, to the tune of 19/36, 203 yards, 1td, fumble and they got blown out.

In the regular season, he's got a lifetime record of 18-16 outdoors, and an 85.0 QB rating, so this isn't just a playoff thing either.

Andrew Luck, Matt Ryan and Drew Brees have so, so much in common, it's almost comical. They all put up huge numbers in the regular season, mostly due to favorable schedules and playing indoors, and then come playoff time, they play ok to great at home, and then like shit when you put them outside. Drew Brees is 7-1 at home in the playoffs and 1-6 on the road.

Everyone talks about the rule changes, the protecting of the QB, the newfangled offenses, as the reasons why passing numbers have increased dramatically in the last 20 years. IMO, it's because there are so many more domed stadiums than ever before. Take away the weather, and it's a whole lot easier for these guys to throw from October-December than ever before.

Wait, why would I be fueled by rage or jealousy? Luck has never beat the Pats. I just find him needlessly overrated.

A few teams:

I don't take him on:
Seattle
Atlanta
Philly
Green Bay
Chicago
New Orleans
Kansas
Houston
Cleveland
New England

and then there's a whole bunch in either the 'it's arguable' or absurdly early category. The Jets are offered Luck for Darnold straight up, do they do it? I don't know. The Rams? Probably not. The Panthers? I mean Newton is close to the same thing, overrated because of draft status.

Luck's has a 73 playoff passer rating / 5.82 yards per attempt. He sucks in the playoffs.

There's really just no argument for this guy being a top 5 qb. He never realized his potential. He won't. He's waaaaaay closer to Drew Bledsoe than Peyton Manning. Pro football reference has his 3 most similar players as Aaron Brooks David Garrard and Danny White (and the best among the listed are Matt Schaub or Kirk Cousins). He is a good but not great qb.

Can I conclude from this that you think Trubisky is better than Goff?

uh, no. I haven't really thought about it one way or the other. They're around as good as each other and that list is 100% random
Oh, I see, I didn't put Goff on there. Yes I would take Goff over Luck too. He was better this year, no injury history, 5 years younger, better contract.

I think luck could have been top 5 in the perfect system with a much better offensive line.

He got neither of those things upon entering the NFL.

I 100% agree with you he's overrated, but you went at least one too far...Trubisky? No sorry. Arguments could be made on some others, but no, Chicago would take him in a heartbeat if we're purely basing this on talent.
