Breaking out of NBA game thread.

Adrian Wojnarowski‏Verified account @wojespn 1m1 minute ago
New York has agreed with Dallas on trade that includes Kristaps Porzingis, Courtney Lee, Tim Hardaway Jr., for Wesley Matthews, Dennis Smith Jr. and DeAndre Jordan, league sources tell ESPN. Players and agents are being notified of particulars. Deal may include more draft assets.

This seems to be more accurate:

Shams Charania‏Verified account @ShamsCharania 2m2 minutes ago
Sources: Full players involved in Knicks/Mavericks deal:

Kristaps Porzingis, Tim Hardaway Jr., Courtney Lee, Trey Burke to Dallas.

Dennis Smith Jr., Wes Matthews, DeAndre Jordan and likely first-round draft pick compensation to New York.

FINAL EDIT: The draft picks are an unprotected first in 2021, and a protected first in 2023.

Whoa. That's a hell of a Woj Bomb. What in the world are the Knicks thinking here? That's an AWFUL trade at first glance, unless I'm missing something here.

Man, the league needs to step in and make the Dolan’s sell. I hate the fucking Knicks, and even I feel bad for them.

Hoping for the first pick in the 2019 draft and they cleared space for Durant. It's a humongous risk.

The Knicks are thinking that this will open up two max slots this summer. They then trade/buyout Jordan and Matthews and continue to tank for Zion.

It frees up enough space for 2 max guys, Porzingis has an injury history and Dennis Smith JR is a decent young player.

If he returns 100%, it's a heist for Dallas but it's mostly about the cap space.

Most likely it’s the Knicks being their awful selves, but it could be signaling that they think they have the inside track on two max free agents this summer.

Guys, are you missing that they dumped Tim Hardaway's contract? That alone makes me love this.

Fuck Kristaps.

Woof. None of those players is anywhere near as talented as Porzingis. Even with draft picks, they're likely to be lower picks in the next couple of years.

I wonder what the medicals for Porzingis look like. At face value this is a heist, but his health is a big concern in the long term.

edit: Tim Hardaway's contract is for more than I thought. What a dumb, dumb contract.

But since it’s the Knicks they’re probably wrong.

Dallas's pick this year is owned by Atlanta but it's top 5 protected. Barring some good luck, it's not finishing top 5.

The picks and conditions will be interesting.

Shams beat Woj, even with Woj's error. I hate the race to report in the media...

They get two max slots this offseason and continue to tank for Zion. In their eyes they go hard for KD and Kyrie. They will buy Wes out and possibly trade Deandre to the Lakers for Lance and Beasley or buy him out as well even though it looks like what it is...

It's about cap space. If you are one of those people worried about what Kyrie will do, this trade should worry you.

It's more a reflection of terrible management turning into having to trade KP for salary dumpage. Not sure how that can really be celebrated. They should have been in true rebuild mode long ago.

Oh god, my head just exploded... Kyrie to NYK for Deandre. Then Danny goes after Anthony Davis. (I know, without Kyrie we don't get AD to resign, but if Kyrie is going to leave anyway...)

Jordan and Matthews are probably going to get cut.

Knicks want Kevin, Kawhi and/or Kyrie ... will settle for Klay or Kemba ... will end up with Kentavious.

Per NBA Radio this means Durant is coming. Not necessarily Kyrie. Maybe Klay or Jimmy Butler.

But man if Kyrie bolts to play with KD forget the whole “I wanna be the man”.

There are just so many players out there available they may get 2 decent ones, even if it's not Durant/Kyrie.

Klay or Butler probably make more sense since they have DSJ. He's not Kyrie, but he's a starter.

Massive kudos to the Mavs: Doncic and Porzingis (if healthy) is an awesome core to build around for the next 10-12 years, uber-complementary in skillsets, and ridiculously entertaining to boot. They just cornered the market on Eastern European jersey sales.

It's crazy that DeAndre Jordan, who is still a productive defensive player, is about to get cut
He's not washed, but he hasn't been good either and the Knicks don't need him either way. Better to do him and his agent a solid and let him latch on with a contender down the stretch.

I get the desire to clear the deck, but unless Porzingis’ knee is shredded, he was way too valuable to use to simply shed contracts. Smith is mediocre and Dallas doesn’t have any other assets. Hard to believe no one else could do better.

Kristaps certainly carries some risk and will be due a lot of money soon, but that’s a lot of potential to give up for just cap space.

Cuban somehow turned a couple mid lotto picks and free agent flotsam into Doncic and Porzingis. Wow

Sources: All-Star Kristaps Porzingis is planning to inform the Dallas Mavericks his intent is to sign the qualifying offer in restricted free agency this summer.
Interesting. You'd think with his ACL injury that he'd want to lock in guaranteed money this summer. Dallas will still have Bird Rights next summer anyway so I don't think they'll be sweating this too much.

Funny parallel to when Ainge made a similar dea to swap Lafrentz’s deal for Ratliff’s shorter deal, while acquiring a formerly touted highly drafted athletic point guard. Except all Ainge gave up were the draft rights to Randy Foye.

The Knicks passed on DSJ two summers ago to take Frankie Nicotine. Seems like that worked out really well.

Yup. They also signed Hardaway to such a bad contract they had to rip apart their team to dump it.
All that said, they are in a position to acquire some serious upgrades and be relevant again. There's just no reason to trust that they will actually be smart here.

At this point, aren't the Knicks so universally regarded as an organizational tire fire that they will have to show that they are good *before* any big FA's go there. I know its NY, and the money is green, but unless NY is the only option I have a hard time seeing good players going there.

If this was another team I'd have more confidence. But it's the Knicks, and it looks like they are just punting on young players again in favor of trying to recruit this year's top Free Agent, a target they have consistently failed to land.
