The Pelicans didn’t have a B2B so they remained in LA last night. Chris Haynes of YahooSports reporting that LeBron and Davis met up for dinner after the game.

I’m sure this will only add more fuel to the “small market GM’s” fire who reportedly alleged tampering charges on LeBron.

I love this league.

But assuming Kyrie is on board with the plan a deal could be in place before then, right?

I would think that the Celtics and Pelicans could work out a deal, but know that they can't consummate it until after 7/1. Nothing stopping them from negotiating a trade and even hammering out the details. I guess another team could tell NO if you don't deal with us now, we're out on 7/1, so you'd better hope that the Celtics don't change their mind.

That might be their leverage.

Ainge has enough track record to alleviate that I’d think. He’s not going to burn his rep in that fashion. It’ll come down to where the picks land and if NO can get the guys they want. Boston drafts them and they swap after.

It may also come down to whether or not the Celtics win a championship this year. It doesn't seem too likely at the moment, but I think that would take them out of the running, what with the stigma against joining winners.

(I'd definitely take a title this year over being set up with Davis over the next 5+ years, but only because there are no guarantees, and knocking off the Warriors, Lakers, etc. this year would be sweet.)

Lowe with a really good deep dive into the AD situation:

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/25619439/anthony-davis-trade-talk-biggest-story-nba

Seems like our biggest impediment is draft day coming before 7/1, which is the date we are allowed to trade for him due to the Kyrie issue.
Interesting take from Lowe’s article:

The Celtics want their chance, and if they get it, expect them to be ultra-aggressive even without any assurances from Davis that he will re-sign. The Celtics are confident in the team and culture they have built under Brad Stevens.
To be honest, I’m confident too. Davis might be the one player I’d do a PG13 type deal and take the risk of him leaving if it meant you had a chance to win it all and a year to convince him to re-sign.

Would be nuts to give up Tatum in that scenario, but I don’t know how LA beats Brown, an arsenal of 1sts, and whatever else is needed.

The way LA beats it (and they know this) is to get Davis to say he'll only re-sign in LA. All the good Celtics offers would come off the table, and Davis would go for some kind of Ingram+Hart+filler package.

The Celtics have no leverage if Davis, and Paul/LeBron's Klutch team, make it known he wants to play in LA. Basically it is up to him as to where he'll be traded.

This would be a trade though, and if the Celtics win, I don't think any stigma would be worse than joining a Lebron-led team.

By "their" leverage, I mean another team's, not Boston's. But you're right - Davis is in a very strong position to dictate terms. But what if NO says, well, we've got a better deal somewhere else...if you don't like it, you'll just have to play for us for a couple more years? Would Davis REALLY sit out in such a scenario?

My larger point being that the Celtics could hammer out a trade before 7/1, that would go into effect after 7/1.

HRB's (correct) point is that if Davis said he ONLY wanted to play in LA, NO wouldn't have a better deal anywhere else.

Put another way: had Kawhi Leonard said he was open to signing in Boston this summer, Jaylen Brown would be wearing silver and black now.

I get that. But that's only true if NO isn't willing to not trade him and instead keep him for the remainder of his contract (which is longer than Kawhi had left) and Davis is willing to sit out for an extended period of time. I mean, the guy still has two more years after this one left. He's not a pending free agent.

Has there been some falling out between KG and the Celtics I missed? I’m pretty stunned he would publicly build up a LAL/AD union when he fully knows the Celtics are the primary competition.

I mean Davis can say that, but that doesn't prevent Boston from dealing for him. If anything that scenario helps Boston by driving down the acquisition price.

Unfortunately, the Masai Gambit is easier to stomach when it's DeMar DeRozan going out, and not 2017 Playoffs Jaylen Brown. Your point is well-taken though.

That's not the point of that article. The point was "don't piss away your youth in a place where you can't win". And secondarily that a Lebron/Davis team would be awesome.

There's nothing in there saying "don't go to Boston" or "all things considered, you'd be nuts not to go to L.A.".

Yeah, but I don't think he was really talking about after the season, he's talking about right now and if AD should get out while he can instead of staying through the season and seeing what happens.

It's odd the article didn't a trade after the season, but I think KG was speaking more to the point of AD is wasting this year if he doesn't get out.

I think if you asked KG after the season, if AD isn't traded, then he wouldn't be pushing LAL only.

Exactly. And this LAL mythology that ESPN et al. are pushing seems to be convincing some people that it's inevitable, and KGs response to that is an understandable "fuck yeah!". Especially understandable since the big guy probably wishes that he had a few more bites at the apple himself and probably imagines how awesome it must be to play with an all time great and competitor like LBJ.

There is no "Lakers, not Celtics" in this piece. Nobody needs to create controversy where there is none.

I think joining a defending champ Celtics team this summer, even via trade, would make it championship or bust in Year 1, which is a tough spot for him, especially because the team would have to be at least somewhat reconfigured to get him. And if he signals he won't sign long-term with Boston, this is the same scenario in which the Celtics' core has jelled into a title team, so that may be enough for Danny to back off. Hard to say, though.

Whereas if the Lakers get bounced in the second round or WCF, my guess is the narrative will be that LeBron has failed to reach the Finals for the first time in forever, is officially in the twilight of his career, and that Davis will be the 1a on any subsequent title team, with LeBron with 1b.

I suspect come the end of the regular season, the Lakers will be shorter odds than the Celtics to win it all. Partly because the number of LAL bettors dwarfs that of other teams, partly on the Lebron factor, but also partly based on results.

Both Tatum and his dad are on board for trading Tatum for Davis:
As the story goes, while discussing the prospects of Boston trading Tatum for New Orleans Pelicans superstar center Anthony Davis, a player the Celtics are believed to have been targeting in a trade for quite some time, Tatum’s father told Maxwell that “I probably would trade him [for Anthony Davis] too, if he wasn’t my son.”

Later, when Maxwell recounted the conversation between he and Justin, Tatum told him “Yeah, I’d trade me too for Anthony Davis,” prompting laughter from the broadcast hosts.
https://celticswire.usatoday.com/2019/01/08/jayson-tatum-id-trade-me-too-for-anthony-davis/

That’s the kind of cold blooded focus you need for a GM, someone should hire the elder Tatum to run basketball ops, he seems sharper than half the executives in this league.

Danny Ainge says that's nothing, he'd ritually sacrifice his own son, or sons, to trade for Anthony Davis.
"Yeah, you know, it's a tough business, you make some decisions, break some hearts, watch the light leave the eyes of your firstborn child as their blood spurts around you. But just look at what Abraham managed to pull off, being willing to sacrifice Isaac - he got the promise of numerous descendants and prosperity. It's important to keep our focus on our goals, and I think everyone involved understands it's a business."

I almost wonder if there’s a part of Tatum who wouldn’t mind getting traded to New Orleans and getting to put up 20 shots / game.

Just out of curiosity, do people think Jokic and Davis could play together? I'm guessing that would be an absolute nightmare for 29 other teams.

Murray has improved his overall game a lot this year and has been shooting the ball a lot better of late. He's easily in the Brown, Ingram, Ball group. The problem is, I'm not sure Denver has the big 2nd piece to add. Maybe Harris, but he's already being paid and is a bit older. If Beasley keeps playing the way he has been the last month until season's end, that might change. Morris and Hernangomez would make good 3rd pieces. Add in Plumlee or Barton for salary purposes.

I think Denver could even let Millsap and Lyles walk and they wouldn't have to match salary. If they did that, they'd probably rather sign another max or close to max guy and match salaries in an AD trade.

Don’t forget Michael Porter — if he looks healthy and spry (no idea where he is right now, health wise) he instantly has high lotto-level trade value.

Per Woj:

Agent Rich Paul has notified the New Orleans Pelicans that All-NBA forward Anthony Davis has no intention of signing a contract extension if and when presented AND THAT HE HAS REQUESTED A TRADE, Paul told ESPN on Monday.

Kuzma, Ingram, Zubac, and a couple future (likely late) first round picks enough? That’s not a horrible return, but not one I would rush to make if I’m New Orleans.

I’d be surprised if they choose to deal him before the team that has the most assets to trade can join the bidding. His value won’t go down as long as he doesn’t issue a Lakers ultimatum.

It’s kind of funny that people think there’s a possibility he can go anywhere but LA.

I mean, theoretically that should be true, but there’s no way this entire situation hasn’t been, and doesn’t continue to be motivated and manipulated by Lebron, and I have a hard time imagining that they aren’t going to continue doing whatever is necessary to ensure that they get their way.

Agreed.

The Pelicans only suitor today is the Lakers. By waiting until the offseason you can bring in the Celtics once Kyrie signs his extension to drive up the price for Davis. In other words, I wouldn’t expect a trade to occur this week.

When can Kyrie officially sign his new deal, only when free agency starts, or after the season ends, before the draft? If the Celtics would be including 2019 draft picks in a Davis deal (e.g., Kings pick, Clippers pick if it conveys, own pick), it may be more enticing to New Orleans to have those picks in hand before the draft than after they’ve become players. (Ainge could always draft players the Pelicans want if they have an understanding beforehand, but if the bidding is still ongoing at that point, you have to pick between doing what’s best with those pieces for you v. what you think Bew Orleans would want).

They'd have to include something like Chandler+a bit (korkmaz?) to make the salaries work. Still, I think if Fultz had panned out, this would be a real possibility. As is, I'm not sure about a team constructed around Butler/Davis/Embiid and then relying on Landry Shamet (as decent as he's been) to get them the ball.
