Ian Kinsler to the Padres for 2 years/8 million.

Except for one 13th inning throw, thanks for the time you spent here.

From Carlos Asuaje to Javier Guerra to Kinsler, we've been quite the pipeline of crappy infielders for the Padres

Kinsler has a couple of gold gloves and Asuaje has made a total of 5 errors in roughly 150 MLB games That’s not too crappy. I’ll give you the Guerra one.

Kinsler did everything the Sox needed him to. Thank you Ian.

Ian Kinsler’s error gave Eovaldi the chance to be a hero.

Eovaldi’s heroics inspired the team to new heights.

Conclusion : Ian Kinsler’s error caused the Red Sox to win the World Series, and earned many millions of dollars for Nathan Eovaldi.

Agree with part two of your conclusion but if he makes the play, or eats the ball to make it first and second with two outs, then the Sox win the game and eventually the series anyway.

Ian Kinsler's error kept me up until 4 in the morning the night before a hockey game in which I tore three knee ligaments after I hit a 3rd period/bad ice fissure. I am still away from the team, toiling 2X/week in PT. I blame Ian.

By and large the in-season acquisitions last year were great. Eovaldi was great. Pearce was great. Both were post-season heroes in addition to doing a lot to help us get there in the first place.

Kinsler kinda sucked.

He comes over and plays three games of four starting July 31 then gets hurt, missing two weeks. Then he comes back and his offense plummets from almost average to putrid. Thanks for the defense, Ian, but the rest of you can fuck off.

Just one old posters opinion of course but throwing shade a player who contributed (even if it was just eating up reps/innings/minutes) to a championship is a good measure of fanbase entitlement.

Judging by some of the responses in these threads, Red Sox fans are no better (and may be worse) than some of the more obnoxious fanbases in sports.

Edit: I should add that Kinsler did more than just take up innings - aside from his infamous gaffe, he played some pretty great defense and had a few big hits too. As such, he deserves nothing but thanks for coming over and holding down the fort for the Sox en route to a really fun season.

I was royally pissed with Ian for a moment there in the World Series but the Sox ended up winning and while he might not have played a huge role, he played a role nonetheless and helped us go all the way. I thank him for his contribution and wish him luck in San Diego.

I agree with this. Remember how he used to kill the Sox, batting leadoff for Texas? It was disappointing that his power had left him, but he played his role with the Sox well, with a couple of notable and noted exceptions.

That two-out double off Sabathia in Game 4 amounted to two runs in a 4-3 win.

I get where you're coming from, but commenting on how good players are is kinda core to the mission of this here place and I think I've been fairly consistent in calling out entitlement.

I mean, I'm old enough to remember when having compelling games down the stretch was considered a win and having the Pats show up on TV wasn't a given and I haven't forgotten it.

Because Julio Lugo gets tons of love here...right.

Edit: and I’ll add Kinsler had a -1 total zone total runs average fielding rating here. He was competent, the words ‘pretty great’ don’t belong anywhere near him.

Fine - you are right PP. Just to repeat, you are totally, and completely correct.

Kinsler played adequate defense (+1 in rpm and was flat at DRS) that included some pretty spectacular plays and some bad ones. And if people were dissing Julio Lugo for his play in Boston in '07 (not his personal stuff) on the way out the door, they were wrong too.

My point isn't to argue that Kinsler was a great player defensively or otherwise for Boston this year. IMHO, saying negative things about him in a thread folks started to thank him for being part of a championship team is a bad look. Other people don't agree and that is fine - its why we messageboard.

So when you said "he played some pretty great defense", your point wasn't that he was a great player defensively? Got it.

Look, I get your overall point, but there's a gap between being entitled and being so grateful and ring starved that every blemish gets overlooked. One can make an objective observation of a player and not be entitled at the same time, or not appreciate what he did actually bring to the table. His contributions don't need to be exaggerated. He was a perfectly competent player in the field, had a timely hit or two and otherwise was replacement level, with a pretty big gaffe that could have easily turned the Series around. Which is great, but doesn't mean he should be enshrined in some kind of glass bubble because he was on the team. When does the Drew Pomeranz "thank you" thread start and are we allowed to say he sucked this season?

So no, I don't find it entitled to cite his limitations, nor do I think his contributions should be hyperbolized.( And I find it disingenuous to suggest to suggest people only criticized Lugo for his off field stuff or that they were wrong to do so, he sucked; but that's another topic). But, as you say, that's why we message board.

Its not like we had a good option in the minors for holding down 2B during a playoff run. Kinsler got injured right after he came over, and yet managed to contribute. It's an irony he made a bad play in the WS, but he was a contributor. I wish the man nothing but good fortune, and I'm glad he was on the team.

I wish him goodwill too, I just don’t see what he provided that Holt/Lin couldn’t have. Maybe if he hadn’t gotten hurt right away it’d be different. Yet, I don’t feel like he needs to be lionized. Ymmv and that’s fine. But we’ve already talked about moving on from either Vaz or Leon and I think they provided a lot more. Anyway, I’ll shut up about it. Didn’t mean to interrupt a sploogefest.

I don't see any reason for utilizing this thread to criticize a player who was hired to fill a temporary need and accomplished his task in a professional manner. I thank Ian for the role he played in our wonderful season and wish him well in the future. No reason to stuff coal in anyone's Christmas stockings this year.

Just to confirm, the Kinsler move was the one that put us over the second luxury tax threshold yes? So acquiring Kinsler essentially cost us a very promising reliever in Buttrey, 10 spots in the draft, and potential increased penalties down the road if we continue to stay above that threshold?

You trade for guys like that and you have no idea which ones will be Ian Kinsler and Eric Gagne and which ones will be Steve Pearce and Nathan Eovaldi. I'm glad they were aggressive. You aren't going to win every deal.

The wrong side of the bridge....

This. You pick up a guy at the deadline, you're getting a couple of months, and that's a small enough sample that even with good players, there's an inherent dice roll involved. Aside from obvious red flags like recent injuries, it's pretty hard to prognosticate which deadline acquisitions are going to give you their best two months of the season, and which are going to give you their worst. Hindsight, as always, is 20/20.

EDIT: To be clear, this is not, in itself, an argument that the Kinsler trade was a good one. But the fact that he played his worst ball of the year down the stretch doesn't make the trade better or worse as a tactical move, because that's an inherent risk of all trades.

When Chief Ironside is your second baseman, Walter Hudson is an improvement. Thank you Kinsler for being an improvement.

I'm trying to understand the rationale for the Padres. They do have two extremely high-upside middle infielders in Tatis and Urias who will be with the team for much if not all of 2019, so maybe he's going to be a glorified mentor for them, but as an actual player, yeesh.

I was hoping the Padres would figure out a way to bring back Galvis, he was terrific for them last season, but someone should be throwing more than $8 million at him at some point.
