Good info on this guy's timeline, worth clicking through. This is nice to see, in case anyone was worried NY was close to done this winter:

"Cashman on Winter Meetings objective: “Obviously we have a number of things to accomplish that I consider heavy lifting.”"

According to one person close to the situation, he believes it will come down to the Yankees and Nationals - not the Phillies - in the Patrick Corbin sweepstakes. "He loves the Yankees and has a close relationship with [Nationals GM] Mike Rizzo."

Yeah, he's going to NY.
He grew up a Yankees fan but he might go to the Nationals because of his close relationship with the GM? please.

If anything maybe RIzzo helps him make a few extra million more a year or an extra year tacked on to the NY deal.

What are NY fans thoughts on the likely range here - 6 years/120?

6/120 seems to be the baseline that everyone is setting expectations at and I would say that anything better than that would be a pleasant surprise. 5 years would leave me ecstatic.

Yeah, I think in the 6/120 range too.

I am pretty confident in Cashman targeting the best fits available given price points this winter, but six years to Corbin makes me nervous. I wonder if NY would be better off with two of Happ/Eovaldi/Morton and then just juggling six guys all season. But Cashman has about a billion times more info than me, so I will go back to trusting him...

I'm with you but can't help feeling that both Machado and Corbin, I guess Paxton also, don't come without questions. The Yankees would arguably be the best team in the league on paper but there's no denying that production from 2 of those 3 players could go in any direction.

To win it all, almost everything has to go right. The Yankees will have enough pieces to compete with Boston and Houston. I would be happy with too much pitching.

Sometimes I feel like we're being coy because this is a sox forum. Do we not already think this team, as is, can compete with those teams? We need to fill out the roster but I don't think the "heavy lifting" quoted above by Cashman is required. If we signed Happ, a bullpen arm, and got infield depth, I'd go to battle with that team. If we sign Corbin and Machado, also great.

The Yankees have been competing with Houston and Boston the past two years. But they haven’t won anything that matters. They are pretty even in terms of talent with the Big Two. Boston and Houston have proven their status with championship seasons. That is what the Yankees lack right now. They haven’t won with this group yet.
Yankees do need more pitching depth, including the bullpen. Corbin will be in pinstripes. I suspect Machado will be, too, and his introductory press conference will be a beauty.
Until the Yankees win again, they cannot claim equal status with Boston and Houston.

Agreed. The goal for the Yankees isn't to compete with Boston and Houston, it's to beat them. They came very close against Houston and then took a step back last year against the Red Sox. However, the team will clearly have talent on par with both teams in 2019 and potentially more talent depending on how this offseason goes. As always, injuries will play a key role in sorting this out. I don't expect anyone else to nudge themselves into this group but it's certainly possible.

If another team is nudging themselves into the discussion, it'll be one of the NL teams who are currently in an arms race. I don't see any teams particularly close in the AL but we shouldn't forget how good the Rays ended up being last year.

The #Phillies are making it clear to marquee free-agent starter Patrick Corbin that they won't be out-bid, and teams still in the hunt for Corbin's services realize it, too.

I pass on Corbin if this is a case where the Yankees have to add a Year and $5m/yr to get it done. I get that we have the ability to spend, but this is silly. As a comment says, "i look forward to the Philly fire sale in a couple years."

The money is only an advantage if you spend it, right? Of course there are limits, but any big deal is going to seem sill and loaded with risk.

Morosi claims Corbin signing is very imminent for 6 years, and Yanks did not go beyond 5 years.

Sources: #Yankees made a 5-year offer to Patrick Corbin but did not increase the years beyond that, an indication that he is signing elsewhere. @MLB @MLBNetwork

Sources: Patrick Corbin signing is imminent. He will receive a 6-year contract, as @BNightengale first indicated this morning. @MLB @MLBNetwork

Holy shit....I could not be happier that we stayed away.

3:03pm: It turns out he’ll handily top Darvish, as Jon Heyman of Fancredtweets that Corbin has landed a $140MM guarantee. Deferrals will reduce the true, present-day value of the deal but it’s still a huge sum.

No way 6 years for Corbin. He doesn't have the body of work like Scherzer or Verlander to risk that many years.

Just give Happ his 3 years and sign Machado and a couple of relievers and get ready for spring

On the one hand, I'm glad that the Yankees did not get Corbin. He's good at baseball. On the other, it would be like them to now train their eyes hard on Eovaldi and they, of course, can outbid the Sox.

Regarding Eovaldi, has there ever been a player to leave the Yankees and later sign with them for a multi-year deal? I thought of Pettitte, who practically counts, but he re-upped year-by-year as he aged into retirement.

I haven't done much research into this, but I'm curious if there's precedent.

Aroldis Chapman.

David Wells, too. I think.

Roger Clemens.

That was priceless and immortal Waldman, but I don't think that was a multi-year deal.

Chapman certainly counts.

He has to want to go there. Plus, why would Cashman hold the line on Corbin but overpay for Eovaldi?

The Yankees almost always leak fiscal discipline stories in this situation and they are almost never true.

I do think possible Yankees held line at 5 years...do not buy they were outbid in AAV...they never are

I think there's a difference between a 3/4 year overpay and a 6 year overpay. I don't think Cashman will move quickly on Plan B since there are multiple options for a #2-3 starter available.

It would be a coup for Cashman to sign Eovaldi. The composition of the Sox staff means they couldn't turn to Happ or Keuchel the way the Yankees would (and the Sox were never in on Corbin). It would trigger a bidding war for Morton, or push DD into the trade market.

It would be a coup until he gets hurt again anyway. I would be utterly thrilled if Eovaldi didn't end up in BOS or HOU this winter, but I think I'd prefer if he didn't end up in NY for big money (which it's going to be) either.

Sure they could turn to Happ or Keuchel. While it might not seem ideal, the Sox were prepared to start last season with 4 lefties in the rotation. I'm not saying they will or that they should. But they could.

I guessed 4/60 for Eovaldi earlier in the offseason, I bet that number is closer to 4/75 now.

Not spending (too much) money on this one specific player, they've still got 4 or 5 additions to make and most or all of those are coming via free agency. They're around $180M now including Gray, so $171M without him and I expect them to end up somewhere between $230M-$260M.

I've been on a lonely island from the start, but I'd rather Eovaldi signed with NY or Houston than with the Sox.

Or Charlie Morton, I don't get why he isn't mentioned more often. He is 35 but he was really good last season, 7th in the AL in ERA (3.14) and 5th in K/9 (10.83).

Thing is if Cashman isn't going to go higher than 5 for Corbin there's no way he's going 5 for Eovaldi. They might go four and give a higher AAV than Boston or Houston, but I'm not sure that would get Eovaldi who probably leans towards Boston or Houston over NY.

They'll keep their noses in it to drive the price up but I'd imagine thats it.

I think BOS needs to roll the dice with him if they can, although that contract is going to hurt. After they finish revamping, NY's major weakness (besides Boone) will almost certainly still be RHPs who can throw 100 or close and those are hard to find, obviously.

As a Sox fan I wouldn't complain about 4/75 considering no one knows what the rotation will look like in 2020 and beyond.
That seems like a bargain compared to Hanley and Panda and Rusney contracts

They could spend well above that every year and still be in the black. Does the downgrade from Corbin to Happ/Eovaldi accomplish anything other than putting a few bucks back in ownership's pocket? Who couldn't they afford if they signed Corbin to this deal?

Yeah I'm kind of surprised NY fans are happy about this. Corbin's season last year was ridiculously good. He was by far the best FA pitcher on the market and it's not like 29 is old. I'd imagine you could get minimum 2-3 very good to great years from him as a LHP in NY.
He was the one pitcher I dreaded NY signing.

Corbin isn't Scherzer or Sale, he's had one ace caliber season and that was in the NL West. I am not judging this postseason until Cashman is done, and he has a long way to go still.
