NFL Ratings Recovering?

Depends entirely on looking at the "growth" in the right context.. Say in 2017 you lost 30% of your audience. In 2018, you gain 8%. Yes. It's an increase. But I certainly wouldn't qualify it as a "great leap" either. I would call it encouraging, but with more work still to do. Until you equal or better where you were, it's not a "leap" at all. You're still behind where you once were. If however, your ratings increased 8% in 2018, and there was no decline or growth in 2017, yes, that is indeed a great leap.
This is nonsensical.
So unless you set a new record every year, no progress from the year before can be considered significant? If I used your logic, I;d say last year was super-awesome because they had so many more viewers than they did in 1957.

Who said anything about setting records??

If you lose 9%, and then gain back 8%, you are still 1% BEHIND what you used to be. So how can that be a "great leap", which is the only thing i took issue with? In other words, what is nonsensical is calling losing viewers "progress". It is most definitely encouraging that they are coming back, but you're still at a loss overall.

It's a bit worse than that - if you lose 9% and then gain 8% you end up 1.72% lower than where you started.

TV in general is a declining marketplace; anyone who is growing their audience is doing well, even if the year-ago comp was exceptionally soft.

Ratings were up 5% for 2018
The NFL stopped a two-year ratings slide and increased its audience across all of its broadcast windows during the regular season, which ended Sunday. Games on CBS, Fox, NBC, ESPN and NFL Network averaged about 15.8 million viewers — slightly below that figure including two games played in London, slightly above without them — an improvement of 800,000 viewers, or 5 percent, on the 2017 season.

The gains in 2018 aren't a complete recovery of the audience the league lost the previous year, but it clawed back about half of 2017's declines. In 2016, NFL regular-season games averaged 16.5 million viewers before falling almost 10 percent to 14.96 million in 2017.

The 2015 season, with a regular-season average of 18.7 million viewers per game, remains the recent high mark for the NFL.

Eagles/Bears did a yuge number, Dawg...

Philadelphia Eagles’ Win Scores Best NFL Wild Card Ratings For NBC Since 1994 https://deadline.com/2019/01/eagles-bears-ratings-nfl-wild-card-golden-globe-sunday-1202530563/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter …

Going into the first hour of Sunday’s primetime and right up to the start of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association ceremony, the Eagles and Bears’ game drew a 22.9/40 metered market result.

In fact, the Eagles and Bears’ battle had the best Wild Card overnight rating for NBC since back when Bill Clinton was President when the Denver Broncos took on the L.A. Raiders on January 9, 1994.

While very likely to change, right now the fast affiliates for the final hour of the game from 7 – 8 PM ET have the NBC broadcast wild carder snaring an 11.2/40 rating among the adult 18-49s. Overall, viewership for that tense back and forth hour has an amazing 37.7 million people watching to see which team would secure a playoff perch.

Heh. Start a game at 6:30pm, meaning everyone in the country can watch until the end without destroying the next day, and you get humongous ratings. Who would have thought?

I know a few people from upstate who gave up on the Bills long ago and bandwagoned to the Pats. Maybe there are more of them than I thought.
I doubt it. Half of my family is from the area. I know they were watching and hoping to be able to rub in a loss.

A significant portion of the country was snowed in yesterday, coupled with an exciting matchup with the leagues most well-known player against a hot-shot gunslinger, is what led to that number. A great day for the NFL.

Plus MLK Day holiday today, so many people off.

But old hero vs young gunslinger is a good narrative. Esp following a similar narrative that went into OT.
