David Payne Purdum who writes about gambling for ESPN, tweeted this earlier today

Major League Baseball and Commissioner Rob Manfred will be making a "major sports gaming announcement" 3 p.m., Tuesday in New York City.

Now some people were thinking that gaming=video games, but I dont think that they would have the commissioner have a press conference for anything video game related, (like MVP baseball or e-sports) (I think Baseball would be the hardest to create an E-sports league from)

also its happening the same day as a Betting convention is taking place in NY

Lastly:

if this turns out to be gambling related, Re-instate Pete Rose and let him run the department

EDIT: Still nope. I'm allowed to bet on baseball now.

Are you trying to say they're going to perhaps partner with someone like DraftKings or MGM? Maybe allow in stadium betting?

February 8, 1983, Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays was told by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn that if they didn't stop working for a casino in Atlantic City, "they’d be put on baseball’s permanently ineligible list, which meant they’d be banned from any Major or Minor League Baseball related activities including coaching, scouting, etc. at any level." They worked as official representatives, greeters at charity events such as autograph signings and golf events. Kuhn told them if they didn't stop he would permanently ban them. Mantle needed the money and thought Kuhn's stance was ridiculous, so he ignored him.

Free Pete Rose!

Major League Baseball is betting on this partnership to pay dividends well into the future.

On Tuesday the league and MGM Resorts International announced a broad ranging multi-year sponsorship agreement that will make MGM Resorts the “Official Gaming Sponsor of MLB” and “Official Entertainment Partner of MLB.” The all-inclusive deal will see MGM Resorts activate advertisement across multiple platforms including MLB.com and MLB Network that will be domestic and international, with MGM Resorts having brand presence in Japan as part of traveling baseball events such as MLB Road Show. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the deal is deemed to be substantial for the league.

MGM Resorts will also gain access to MLB’s treasured statistical data, albeit on a non-exclusive basis. However, some enhanced stats will be provided to them on an exclusive basis.
“We are pleased to partner with MGM Resorts International, a clear industry leader in the sports gaming area, to work together on bringing innovative experiences to baseball fans and MGM customers,” said Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred. “Our partnership with MGM will help us navigate this evolving space responsibly, and we look forward to the fan engagement opportunities ahead.”

The league, which initially wished to avoid getting involved in wagering on baseball had their hand forced when the Supreme Court in May overturned a ban on legalized sports wagering in many states across the country. That opened the gates for states such as New Jersey to begin sports betting.

For those that worry that the 1919 Black Sox scandal may somehow return, the news on Tuesday may raise eyebrows. The league has said that they wish to see measures to ensure that corruption doesn’t occur in and around gaming, and it was clear on Tuesday that the league has said they will work with MGM Resorts to collaboratively work on “comprehensive responsible gaming measures and work to protect the integrity of the game both on and off the field.”

MGM Resorts locations will be see labeling such as “MLB-Authorized Gaming Operator” for digital and live gaming events. As part of the deal, MGM will be granted the use of official league logos and marks. MGM will have a visible presence at MLB Jewel Events, including the All-Star Game and World Series

I think sports betting should be legal.

But if the leagues can restrict which companies can list the bets, that should be dealt with immediately. And if it can’t, we should reform whatever antitrust or trademark law allows it to fester. That would be bullshit.

The leagues can't restrict which companies can list the bets. It's about using logos, and perhaps league data. It's mostly a marketing partnership.

MLB with a new asinine rule due to this gambling partnership.

Major League Baseball is mandating that managers send their lineup cards into the Commissioner’s Office before releasing them in the clubhouse to reporters and players prior to games.

The move comes as the league wants to ensure that information passed around the clubhouse and the stadium doesn’t provide an edge to gamblers.

“We are updating a number of our procedures to reduce integrity risks associated with the expansion of sports betting in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling last May,” Major League Baseball said in a statement provided to The Action Network on Wednesday. “One new procedure is that we now ask clubs to submit starting lineups in a uniform fashion in order to reduce the risk of confidential information being ‘tipped.’ This approach mirrors those of international sports leagues in more developed betting markets.”

How long before the game? How long before revealing the lineup to the players? What happens if a manager wants to make a change before giving the lineup to the umps—e.g., a player starts to feel tight and it’s best they just be available to pinch hit if needed?

MLB's inability to avoid stepping on its own dick anytime they try to do something new is mind-blowing. This is going to be a mess for all the reasons Lomb pointed out and is worthless to boot. Alex Cora can still announce that he's going to rest Pedey tomorrow in a post-game interview. He can still tell a guy after a tough game that he can go out and blow off steam that night because he'll give him a day off the next day. When Jon Miller interviews Bochy three hours before the game and Bochy says he's planning to sit Brandon Belt, the radio engineer will have info that others won't -- how are they dealing with that?

I’m going to be pissed at this even though I (or MLB, as the article states) know nothing about the details of what it actually entails!

I don't think this is that big of a deal. From MGM's perspective, they know they'll be getting information from one source and it will be accurate (at least at the time) in order for them to set the odds.
From the bettors perspective, you'll know that odds are set by information that came directly from the clubs and MLB, rather than some twitter post or other speculation.

Of course lineups are gonna change between when they're sent and when games start. It happens in every sport, key players get scratched right before gametime sometimes.

The posting of the lineup should be accompanied by the bugle call signalling that the horses are on the track.
