Ugh. I would so like that guy to have a healthy season under Cora's management. Hope he can recover fully this time.

A report just came through MLB.com that Steven Wright had knee surgery and is preparing to pitch next season. That doesn't sound like Opening Day to me. He can't be planned on for next season.

I'm no doctor — docs please weigh in — but on the face of it "arthroscopy and debridement" doesn't necessarily sound like he won't be ready for opening day. I'd agree that he can't be "planned on" since in the past his issues have tended to recur, but this surgery in and of itself doesn't sound (to me) like that serious of a deal.

On one of the 60-second update spots on MLB radio this morning they reported that “Wright is hoping to be ready for the start of spring training.”

So, that’s good news if accurate.

I wouldn't expect recovery from arthroscopy to be that lengthy, certainly not such that it would threaten one's chances of being ready for spring training. But, given his history (and frankly, Pedroia's), I don't think normal expectations apply to Wright. He has to be treated as if anything he does is a bonus, including being healthy for spring training.

Some interesting comments on Eovaldi’s arm from the guy who operated on him in 2016. Apparently he’s got a clean bill of health after visiting the doctor this week.

I'll throw out a trade target that I don't think I've seen yet, inspired by the Goldschmidt trade today: Robbie Ray. Ray was hurt a bit last year, but he's young and signed through the next two years. Maybe some kind of crazy three-way deal?

Sale, Eovaldi, Price, Porcello, Rodriguez.

Assuming reasonably good health, that's a hell of a rotation. With Velazquez, Johnson, and Wright backing them up. Nice.

2018 numbers with Boston (to refresh your memory)
Sale: 2.11 era, 207 era+, 0.86 whip, 13.5 k/9
Eovaldi: 3.33 era, 132 era+, 1.28 whip, 8.0 k/9
Price: 3.58 era, 122 era+, 1.14 whip, 9.1 k/9
Porcello: 4.28 era, 102 era+, 1.18 whip, 8.9 k/9
Rodriguez: 3.82 era, 114 era+, 1.27 whip, 10.1 k/9

Again, assuming good health, every single day the Red Sox will be putting at *minimum* an above-average starting pitcher on the mound. That's going to play really, really well over 162 games.

2019 rotation is obviously loaded to the rafters, but 2020 isn’t bad either: Price, EO, Edro, Wright and next man up.
I think Wright is headed for a glorified swingman/rover role the next two years, like McHugh, Devenski and Peacock have been used in Houston. Imagine having to face Eovaldi or Edro for 5-6 innings, then Wright, then Barnes/TK to close.

Way I see it, we still need two more guys under contract for 2020.

5 starters

Hembree, Johnson, Wright (Velazquez riding the shuttle again for Wright’s DL trips) become the 10th, 11th and 12th men

Barnes, Brasier are the 8th and 7th inning righthanders.

That’s 10.

Need a closer, and another 7th/8th inning guy, preferably lefty.

Wright would probably only be pitching the one inning so for most of the guys, it won't matter, but if the meat of the opposition comes up in the 7th, it will be a beautiful thing.

I seriously doubt Brewer fails to make the 25-man unless he bombs in ST. With a 93 mph cutter and extreme groundball tendencies, he's a great fit for this bullpen.

And I think the likelihood that we open the season with a closer whose name is not either "Barnes" or "Committee" is very low, and shrinking by the day.

Cora has already said some pretty strong things about Brewer's stuff. He's the only guy they went out and procured for the 40 man this offseason. It would be a total shock if he didn't make it.
