You know it's only a matter of time before he starts using this alert system for political ends.

I'm laughing at all the kids (like my son) who probably have their phones with them in class against the rules, and who got outed by this. It was friggin loud.
Hmm, with the ringer off there was no alert sound for me. On Silent, it was just a popup notification.

Tiffany finally got a text from her dad.

But seriously. You can’t opt out unless you turn off or silence your phone.

Turning your phone off is the only way to avoid it apparently.
My phone was off, my husband's on. I am sorry, but I kept imagining this being used to tell the local citizenry to report to police any immigrants or non-Whites in their neighborhood. (This will probably be deleted by mods and I will be warned.) If it merely was a "test" of the emergency alert system, that would be fine, but all of a sudden it's a Presidential alert? Why?

I was playing some dumb iOS game with my sound off and did not get the alert. I have both the AMBER Alerts and Emergency Alerts turned off on my phone.

This system has existed since at least the Obama administration, if not GWB.

The worry now, of course, is Trump deciding to use it over the next month for random tweet-esque nonsense. Who's going to tell him no?

It is my understanding and correct me if I am wrong is that the Presidential Alert originates from FEMA not from the stubby little fingers of the POTUS and his phone. Regardless, I got the noise but no message so whatever.

Same here, but I have Amber Alerts off because I'm a horrible person and got sick of them at 2am for a car in another state.

I mean, everyone knows FEMA actually sent this not Trump right? I mean, it's not like he took over the EBS on TV and radio for things right?

I mean, everyone is okay in here right?

Yes, and I don’t want them. If a Level 5 Killstorm is heading for me and the only thing that will spare my life is a text from FEMA then it’s just my time to go.

Of course we understand that. If it came from him it'd be in ALL CAPS and nonsense.

I was on my phone typing an email and between brief keystrokes I just have hit dismiss? It was like two seconds of a weird sound and then nothing, never even saw what it was. Figured it was a glitch on the new iOS until seeing FB and this thread.

And I agree with Lomb. My cell phone isn’t saving me, I’d rather go without knowing it’s coming.

So my cell phone is a Pixel on Google Fi, and, yes, it integrates my life with Google a little too closely. But after getting the text this afternoon... suddenly my gmail account is subscribed to the White House newsletter. Which I discovered after a friend reported the same thing on Facebook. Is this as creepy as it seems?

I had the sound off on my LG G7 Thinq and still got the sound and a text message to boot. I was amused by the screen that popped up that ended, "No further action needed," and then there was a Conform button below that.

I also had Dr. Who interrupted this morning by New Hampshire's weekly test on Comcast and later this afternoon there was a network test that went on for four pages.
