Who are you rooting for besides Boston?

Milwaukee: Fun team who's made quite a few risky player acquisitions the last couple years; least unlikable from an AL/Boston standpoint

Oakland: homerun happy and complete surprise; Can send home a100 win team in a one game WC

Cleveland: Francona plus should have beat Chicago

Atlanta: Fun, young team but potential juggernaut for the next decade

Colorado: Pretty neutral

Los Angeles: LA hate, keep the 30 year drought going

Houston/Chicago: Recent WS winners

New York: Self explanatory

After the Red Sox, it's

1. Brewers (only other team I actually like, never won, hungry and nice and good fans)

2. Braves(process of elimination and the MFY battles in the 90's)

3. Indians (only because of Tito)
4. Astros (Altuve and they're the 2nd best team)

5. Rockies

6. Athletics (would be higher were it not for their cheapness and crappy ballpark)

7. Dodgers (LA love, Roberts)

8. Cubs (Chicago hate, Cubs fans hate)

9. MFY

For me it's:

1. Brewers
2. Braves
3. Rockies
4. A's
5. Indians
6. Astros
7. Cubs
8. Dodgers

Ranked mostly in order of how much I enjoy watching the teams play.

I'd really love a Red Sox-Dodgers World Series. Two MLB Mount Rushmore franchises who have never met there. Bi-coastal, Dave Roberts, lots of big stars on both sides. Brewers next, because they deserve it and I'm certain we would pulverize their starting pitching. They remind me of the 2007 Rockies.

Red Sox
Not Yankees

After that, I'm hoping for close and exciting games and probably won't really know until I'm watching what I want to happen. Slight lean toward the Titos. But other than that, sometimes it takes actually watching the game to feel it. I get irrationally angry at Hader for his old homophobic tweets and Yuli Guriel for his Japenese eyes. I really should let stuff like that go, but sometimes you don't know until you know.

Milwaukee, Oakland,Dodgers, because I like teams with former Red Sox (Notable exceptions: Ellsbury, Damon and Embree. Any Yankee is anathema is me, even (temporarily) Andrew Miller.)

I've been hoping for a Red Sox Braves series for 28 years. It probably happens this year, because I'm going to be out of town. Still would be cool, though.

Cleveland. It would be Milwaukee hands-down, but I don't want Ryan Braun to have nice things.

Actually, the Red Sox beat the Dodgers in the 1916 World Series when the Brooklyn franchise was named the Robins.

I'll root for underdogs, so I like Milwaukee, Oakland, Colorado, and Atlanta.
Yeah I’m a sucker for the underdog too, but what’s weird is I still count Atlanta’s 90s success as too recent, which is why I flip Cleveland in there instead. 1948 was a long time ago.

1) Milwaukee: hard to not like. Yelich, Cain, Aguilar are beasts. Sick bullpen too.

2) Cleveland: yeah I know they’ve had great seasons but previous years postseason performances still leads me to count them as underdogs, combined with the long drought for pretty faithful fans. Tito. Francisco Lindor is probably my favorite non-Sox position player. Only reason they aren’t at the top of my list is that they are an AL rival of the Sox and I have trouble rooting for AL teams.

3) Colorado: Arenado, more bias towards favoring NL teams, a kind of “sorry for taking such joy in watching your team get its ass kicked in ‘07” thing too

4) Atlanta: Great young superstar talent, again with NL bias and I guess the Boston connection plays a small role in separating them from #5.....

5) Oakland: homeruns, players overcoming a lot of cheapness in the org, and that they are starting off against the Yankees helps.

6) Astros: I really like their team full of great guys, but recency of them winning and their fanbase becoming kind of obnoxious keeps them pretty low on the list, just ahead of....

7) Dodgers: Dave Roberts, Kershaw... Beyond that... eh.

8) Cubs: Same as Dodgers... some ex-Sox connection but the recency of their win knocks em lower.

The A's for one game, because fuck the Yankees, and because I'd love to go to some ALDS games (even though I think I'm still recovering from game 5 in 2003).

I love these Dave Roberts Dodgers teams. I am really hoping for a Sox-Dodgers World Series. If anything because it would be hilarious for the Sox to play a team who's bullpen is actually less reliable than Boston's.

2. Brewers
3. Tribe - Just because of Francona
4. A's
5. Braves
6. Rockies
7. Astros
8. Cubs
9,453. MFY

If you have that many exceptions, doesn’t it water down the premise?
That and you can probably find a former Sox player in practically every organization. I guess he doesn't like Jon Lester, Anthony Rizzo, Jorge De La Rosa and the Cubs either, or Josh Reddick and the Astros. The Braves have Anibal Sanchez, the Rockies have no one that I'm aware of.

Pretty sure none of those guys played for the Yankees.

Hell, people joke about the A's being Redsox West but you could call the Cubs Redsox Central.

So why aren't you cheering for the Astros or Cubs?
For the same simple reason: they won it all recently. Plus, obviously, in the Astros case, if they are in the WS, the Sox aren't. I am first and foremost a fan of the Boston Red Sox. Edit: I don't expect the As to win the WS or even to beat the Sox, but if they did, it wouldn't break my heart.

If the Sox are out, I'm rooting for a Dodger/Indians World Series. Dave Roberts vs. Playoff Tito.

Obviously rooting for Cleveland over Houston in that leg of the ALDS as Houston is probably the team to beat in the playoffs.

But you are cheering for the A's? :p
Man, some people either have short memories or are much younger than me, but I developed a pretty strong hatred of the A's, from the period in the late 1980s to early 1990s. For those who do not remember/have forgot/haven't learned about it, the Sox had some fairly good teams back then (albeit nothing like the 2004 or 2018 squad), won the AL East in both 1988 and 1990 and went to the ALCS both years, only to get unceremoniously swept by the A's twice. Not just swept, but embarrassingly blown out in some of those games (in 1990, the Sox scored 1 run in all 4 games - not enough to counter the 20 runs the A's scored) and lost heartbreaking close games in the rest (often b/c of bullpen). We just seemed snake bit against them. Hated Dave Stewart with a white hot passion - he just totally owned us/Roger Clemens - I put one of his baseball cards on my dartboard, and probably burned the rest. Hated, hated, hated the A's.... as such, have a hard time to this day rooting for them (albeit, yes, I am still rooting for them to beat the MFY)....

I was writing a similar reply but decided against it. I started watching baseball around 87-88 and the A's were worse than the Yankees. F Bob Welch and his 27 wins too.

I could not have expressed this better.

Brewers aside, I wouldn’t mind seeming the Dodgers in the World Series as I’m living in LA and would figure out a way to schmooze my way into a ticket or two. And Dave Roberts. But not especially interested in them winning it all unless it’s against the MFY.

Hmm, one of my sons is an A’s fan. Beat the MFY on Wednesday and he and I get to an ALDS game or 2 at the mausoleum. I drive up to his place and he doesn’t mind driving the rest of the way. Let’s do this A’s!

If it's not the Sox, my only concern is it not being the Yanks. Would love to see ratings for an A's/Rockies match-up. It would be fun to see how FOX would spin that.

Although CBS lists that as the 7th best match up, so what do I know? Not much, I suppose.

Contempt is a little harsh. If you put the A’s fans with their throwing their food all over the place, drums, ricky tick drumsticks on drum edges, hats with 40 gas station A’s mementos etc. in a good stadium, you might not notice them so much. But when you have the possibility of a rest room overflow and all these jamokes in the same day, it’s not so good a day at the park experience.

To answer your question, kind of, and knows he can come back to the proper side any time. But he won’t, and that’s fine. His wife, kids, brother in law, who’s been at the Coliseum for their last five elimination games, back to the Derek Lowe game, are all strong A’s fans. But go A’s!

Edit, for tonight only.

Anyway, the A’s, and I call them that and not the As because that’s what they call themselves on their website, logo, etc. For them to get off the ground and up to 500 feet in their quest this year, they have to get by the Red Sox. So, how can people have them up so high on their rooting lists?

My ultimate scenario is Rockies/Sox in a 7 game series. Either way I am both elated and heartbroken, just like 07.

Oh, and my ultimate scenario also involves the mfy losing 38-0 tonight in the toilet.

1. Brewers - reasons above apply here
2. Braves - Have rooted for a Brave/Sox series for as long as I've lived in the south. Would probably get divorced but find a way to get to a game.
3. Rockies - Youthful team that plays all in. Super Underdog Story
4. Cleveland - Tito
5. Astros - see Rockies, but they'd have to beat the Sox to get there probably so that's a downgrade.
6. Oakland - on one hand this means they beat the MFY. But they also would have beat the Sox.
7. Dodgers - Dodgers fans are the west coast equivalent of MFY fans (aka assholes but don't care as much).
8. Actual meteor striking the earth and ending life as we know it.
9. Parasites in my urethra
10. Yankees.

The apostrophe implies the possessive and then I look for and can't find what they own. While As looks like "as," it's (or perhaps you prefer "its") rarely an issue.
