Blake Snell with 6 no-hit innings last night. He's now 19-5, 2.03 ERA. A couple more games like that and he'll be the odds-on favorite for the Cy Young.

also, in a game the D-backs had to win...

Clay Buchholz was removed due to right elbow stiffness before his start today. Matt Koch started the game.

Top of the 10th. 1 out. Bases loaded. 1 run lead.

Cubs's Pedro Strop is up. (Their closer). He has pitched 1.2 innings.

Does Maddon send a PH to increase the lead? No. He send Strop to hit. He promptly not only hits into a DP (home to first) but he injures himself running to first and is removed from the game anyway. This is a reliever, not an NL starter who is better used to batting and running.

I've seen Maddon try to lose games in the WS and now this. Not the genius everyone brands him as. Not at all.

Classic Maddon. The wacky, unconventional genius. When it works, people rave about him. When this shit happens, it seems to get overlooked.

was just coming in to talk about the move as well. MLBTR is reporting it's a hamstring strain and at least 2 weeks out.

it's Farrell leaving Workman in the WS in 9th inning level of dumb.

Jansen all over the place clinging to 4 run lead

Edit: Machado throws it away trying to turn 2. Up 2 with 2 outs and tying run at the plate in Matt Adams.

Juan Soto and Ronald Acuna Jr. tied at this second for the best OPS in the NL at .959, 400 PA minimum. They are 19 and 20, respectively.

"Only seven 20-year-olds had an OPS of .959+: Mike Trout, A-Rod, Al Kaline, Ted Williams, Mel Ott, Jimmie Foxx, Cap Anson. No 19-year-old ever has."-Jeff Passan

Rays/A’s tied at 1 in the 6th. If Rays can sweep, they will be down 5 (4 in the loss column) with 14 to play.
1-1 going into bottom 9.

Rays used 8 pitchers thru 9, none going longer than 2 innings—2 hits, 1 run, 2 BB, 10 K. And the run was on a seeing eye grounder. That’s Rays baseball right there.

Juan Soto 1 for 1 with 3 walks and 3 SBs today. It is too bad Acuna got so hot, I really wanted Juan to get RoY. At 19 years old, not including today's game, he has an OBP of .417, second only to Votto in the NL. Mookie and Trout are better than them both but what an amazing debut for Juan, especially considering he lost most of last year to injury

Francisco Lindor with his 35th HR of the year? I have not been paying attention to the Indians at all and had no idea he had been having such a huge power year

Daniel Vogelbach (who?) hits a 2-out granny in the 8th for the Mariners against Houston. They win 4-1 and the Sox' HFA magic # is 4.

Kolten Wong talks shit about the Rays after they didn't call up his brother

http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/24715807/kolten-wong-st-louis-cardinals-criticizes-tampa-bay-rays-not-calling-younger-brother-kean-wong

"He's just in a bad organization which doesn't give chances to guys who deserve chances," Kolten Wong told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "That's tough for him. He's a really good player, and not to have a chance is sad."

Emphasis mine, but I don't think he should be talking shit about another organization and one that could potentially employ him in the future. Is he wrong? Or is this going to turn into something?

Kean Wong may have a big league future. He may even be called up to Tampa Bay as soon as tomorrow.

But... Isn't it better for prospects to play then to sit on the bench? Since the Durham Bulls have been in the playoffs and still have a game left after winning the International League playoffs... Kolten's musings seem quite silly.

Wong doesn't look like much of a prospect, he went unselected in the rule 5 draft last winter and is not on the 40 man. His brother is right that TB tries to control service time as much as possible, but 1) every team does that now and 2) his brother looks like a future borderline pro at best. I'm sure they are both frustrated that he has been stuck in AAA for almost two full seasons, but he didn't hit there last season (hence no one taking him in the rule 5) and he wasn't that much better this season. He will likely be available in the rule 5 again in November, maybe his brother can make a promotional video and send it around to teams before that.

Austin Meadows has been dominating AAA since he came over from PIT and is still down there for explicitly this reason...the Rays want prospects playing meaningful games and getting reps vs riding the bench...and it's not like the big-league club is exactly struggling lately. Also, Wong is pretty far down on the depth chart. He got leapfrogged by Lowe and Wendle this season, he was left unprotected in the Rule 5 last year and may be again this year. He has a weak arm and little power and the Rays just aren't super high on him. Their system is loaded and he's not considered top tier. The idea that the Rays, of all organizations, don't give young guys a shot is just laughable. Something like half their team right now is rookies.

edit: beaten to the punch by the Rays second most avid follower

Also my man Nick Solak is charging from below, but Wander Franco looks like he will pass all of them in a year or two. If this publicity helps get Wong to another organization, that might be best for all.

Kaleb Cowart was hitting an almost impossible .120 before just hitting a go-ahead grand slam in the 6th against the A’s, 7-4 LAA now.

Tampa Bay now 5 back in the loss column with 12 to play

After reading about the epic collapses of the past, nothing is impossible

That 2-1 extra-inning loss to the A’s on Friday looming large. Runners on 2nd and 3rd, no out, in the 6th and couldn’t score—in addition to multiple other squanders. 3 back in the loss vs 5 would have really made this a race. As is, A’s would need to tank pretty hard. They do have 5 more against the Angels and 3 against the Mariners, though, solid teams and division rivals....maybe, just maybe.

...and the talk here in the spring was a 100 loss season as they undergo an Astros like purge of a few years ago....they just need to get that new yard built in downtown Tampa

Angels laying a big fat egg tonight. A’s up 9-0 in the 6th.
Remember when I asked you in May if you were mad that other teams were bringing up guys like Gleyber and TB still hadn't called Adames up, and you were fine with it? They are 45-27 when he starts, 40-39 when he does not.

I don’t know that I buy that stat being anything other than random variation. Adames has been solid, but I don’t think his .750 OPS is really make or break. They got the pitching figured out better as the season progressed and the trade deadline really kicked them into high gear. I stand by my decision!

Gurriel with a 2 run HR to tie it with two outs off Romo, then Smoak went back to back to finish it off.

If ever a team in the history of the game has been due for a game like that, it is our beloved Rays.
