100 Wins

I don't post much... and please be kind :)

I've followed the Sox day and night, 365.25 days a year since 1964, and I'm just so thrilled to finally see the boys win 100 games. This would never affect me in the way that '04 did, and I doubt that anything in life would ever be match that type of thrill again, but I'm kind of surprised that no one had a thread on this.

For the record, although we had a non-100 win streak since '46, there are a few other teams that have a longer streak of non-100 win season futility:
Chicago White Sox haven't won 100 since 1917
Pittsburgh hasn't won 100 since 1909, AND
When the Cubs won 100 in 2016, they hadn't won 100 since 1935.

Texas-- even as the old Washington Senators, has never won 100 games in a season,
Milwaukee-- never as the Brew Crew, and did not win 100 in their lone season in Seattle,
Washington-- also did not win 100 games in Montreal.

Other teams, all expansion in the last half century or so, have not ever won 100: Toronto, Tampa Bay, Miami, Colorado and San Diego.

So, it's the first time in a lot of our lives-- and I'd venture that maybe no one on SOSH was here to see the last time it happened. I thought that this achievement deserved a thread, and CONGRATULATIONS to the SOX....

Oh yeah, the Atlanta comeback game last week, I'm the guy in the white jersey on the right...

5/21/14:
100 wins is not out of the question!
2/6/14:
And back big! So fricken stoked to be part of the best double pay combo in the history of ever! The quest to 100 wins starts now, mofos. Jump on the band wagon now, because it's going to be an epic ride!
edit: It's too difficult to go back through history and quote some of the better lines on 100-wins. Sorry.

Cool little video of their 100 wins
Several things after watching this while folding laundry:
1) Home runs are fun. I hope the power comes back all the way for the post season (it feels lacking a bit lately).

2) Xander is so unsung in his heroic play this season that I almost just can't even. X is bringing it every day.

3) I simply cannot get enough of the Mookie HR vs. Blue Jay's Happ and the Phillips HR vs Atlanta. I could watch those two shots on a loop for hours and be perfectly happy.

4) When Porcello and EdRo are right (and it's frequent enough that it could happen in the month-long post-season), the 1-4 of this rotation is truly sick. May the Goddess bless SalPriCelEdro.

5) That inning vs. the MFY in late July (or was it early August) was effing awesome. The night Bradley beat the throw home, and Pearce hit the 3HR.

The last time they were sitting on 99 it broke my heart. This team has had so many great moments - they really deserve to be the first since '46 to get to the century mark. Now they deserve to be the first (I believe) to celebrate World Championships exactly 100 years apart.

I briefly though--wait, do I know that guy??

Then realized you look like at least a half a dozen SoSHers off my head. And I assume far more.

It only took 20 years but @Rasputin was finally right!
How long has then been cocked and ready? That's kinda cool...

Like, it's not just the resolution of the thing itself, but... man... I'm going to miss that joke. I'm sure it will endure in other forms--it will evolve--but there's something about putting that to rest, isn't there?

Persistence, motherfuckers, persistence.
Has anyone heard from SeanBerry lately?

They would be the first to do it exactly 100 years apart. The closest were the White Sox 99 years apart (1906 and 2005) and the Red Sox 101 years apart (1912 and 2013).

And ... not to freak people out, but if we don't manage the feat this year, we won't get another crack at it until 2104. :-(

In keeping with two of my favorite games, "What could go wrong?" and "It's worse than we think," you made me wonder what the book about that would look like.

Like, things back then couldn't be any crazier than these days, right?

Oops--or could they?

Thanks for starting this thread

Why were you high-fiving that guys face?
Did you know him?
The guy in back of me in the red jersey is from Boston, and the guy with the long beard was from S. Carolina. The guy I was high-fiving was from Carolina also, and don't think I hit his face....but it was pretty much bedlam, so who knows?

Great video. I especially loved some of the defensive gems that I had missed when they happened. The outfield defense... damn, it's good.

There is. It's very 2004ish. But, honestly, what the hell else is there to do now? I've seen no-hitters, cycles, triple plays, unassisted triple plays, inside the parkers, the greatest comeback in history, World Series Championships, plural!, MVPs, Gold Gloves, Cy Youngs, and now 100 wins.

I guess I could go on a quest for a perfect game, but that's a lightning strike kind of thing. If we win out, I think we tie the Mariners (if my math in the middle of the night was any good) so I guess there's that, and the team record, and beating the Yankee record, and of course winning the world series this year and every year.

Ooooh, wait....back to back World Series.

That's a thing now.

Has anyone heard from SeanBerry lately?
I was wondering this self-same thing today.

The bat was always there, but it's wonderful to see him match consistency with power. He's turned into the offensive weapon we always hoped he'd be. And the defense has been as good as any SS in the majors.

The OF gets a lot of well-earned plaudits, but to me this is Xander is the linchpin. "Bringing it every day" is a great way to put it.

I think the fact that he (X) wasn't seriously hurt after the HBP at his wrist this year was essential for the whole teams success. With all the changes and rotating parts in the infield this season (1st: Hanley, Moreland, Pearce - 2nd+3rd: Nunez, Pedey, Kinsler, Holt, Devers...) he seemed to be the constant that held things together.

And being the guy to protect JD in the batting order while thriving with men in scoring position (OPS 1.152; 1.085 with 2 outs) is obv. huge as well.

I think this is right, and speaks to X taking the next evolutionary step where he’s moved from having talent to being reliable.

Baseball is naturally streaky, so a manager needs reliability where he can get it—and it can have an outsized influence on success even relative to raw numbers. Like having your stopper on the mound.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but Jersey Street Store is not affiliated with the team. They're selling their own creations with no input from the team itself.
It’s a ‘47 Brand item, which I believe is licensed to sell official merch for all 30 teams. As opposed to Sully’s T’s or Chowdaheadz, who don’t have that license and makes items related to the teams but not official merch.

Licensed to sell official merch does not mean that the teams have approval or are in anyway responsible for the products.

So you think this was done without the approval of the Red Sox? Additionally, why haven’t we seen this for other teams in previous seasons?

I mean, seriously. Who the F cares if we’re the first to 100 wins? We could still lose the division to the second or third team who gets there. Why celebrate this? 100 wins is great and all, but there are bigger prizes to be had this season.

Yes. I think it's a product either created exclusively by 47 or it was designed and commissioned by Jersey Street Store. If it were a Red Sox created or approved product, we'd see it on the MLB.com store.

(and frankly, we'd probably have seen it on Wednesday night on some of the players...like when they win the division or a playoff round)

I disagree. This isn’t like winning the pennant or division. You would have been more likely seeing a shirt acknowledging them clinching a playoff spot. 100 wins? Congrats. Now win the division, pennant, and World Series.

Again, why haven’t we seen this done for other teams?

Do you see all the merch for other teams?

Do you think Texas Ranger fans are aware of this shirt?

100+ wins deserves to be celebrated. At the end of the day the season is going to be defined by a few games in Autumn, which is fantastic, but at the same time we are witnessing a historical regular season and that matters. The Red Sox this summer have kicked more ass than they have ever done in 100+ years; and as the YouTube video shows, there were a ton of awesome moments that took place throughout the season, from Mookie’s grand slam, to JBJ’s diving catches, to Pearce’s three dingers in the MFY Yankee sweep, and yeah I’d trade that all for another ring; but that doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate all the fun we’ve had this year.

Because other teams don't have crazy rabid fans that would buy shirts like that from crazy rabid retailers trying to capitalize on their association with the team? How do you know that other teams don't have 3rd party apparel makers taking advantage of their licensing to create products that the teams aren't necessarily aware of?

I'm not endorsing the concept of the shirt, BTW. I'm more questioning why it even matters. As JtB said, it's just a fucking shirt.

The Indians (or 3rd party folks) sold shirts in reference to their 22 game win streak.

If this is what that dude has to complain about he’s having a really good week.

Any idea why, just to name two, the defensive metrics are all over the place for him?

Fangraphs and UZR have him at +3 runs. BBRef tho has him at -16 runs for the year.using DRS.

Yes. I’m definitely the first one around here to complain about something that others deem to be petty.

I still remember the first time someone pointed out to me how playoffs, as awesome as they are, really do devalue the regular season.

I totally agree that it's a good thing to find more different ways to enjoy a thing.

And I also hope they win it all too because that would really resolve a lot of these tensions for us.
