Big Daddy Wheels signs a 5 year, $41.25m extension with Winnipeg for $8.25m AAV - kicks in for 2019-20 when he'll be 33.

That one could hurt

NBD, they only have $52 mil committed next year with Laine, Connor, Trouba, and Morrisey to sign and Myers and Chiarot to replace in the lineup. YIKES. They could very easily be at the cap next year with 9 forwards, 4 D and a goaltender if they don't get any deals on those guys.

Holy smokes. Wheeler is good, but not "back up the Brinks and build a team around him" good. And he's also not young, as PSK notes.

It looks like they still have quite a bit of cap room, but that's a lot of pretty good RFA's to try to get signed. They probably should have saved some of that money for Laine, who appears to be the real deal, to me at least.

It's probably fair market value for Wheeler, which means it's a bad deal. He was easily a $10m/y player the past three seasons. But the deal starts when he's 33 and he's coming off a significantly down year across the board (except for a ridiculous 34 power play assists, which more than doubled his career high and led the league). Most forwards decline rapidly between 33 and 37. I'd be very uneasy giving this contract to Bergeron if his deal was expiring after this season, and Bergeron is likely a more valuable player.

Vegas got Tatar for a 2018 1st, 2019 2nd and 2021 at the deadline. Given that value, I can see him being the key piece with Suzuki being the high value (2017 13th overall) prospect going along.

~$800k savings living in and playing half his games in Nevada for his $5m salary, prorated to $7m that jumps to $1.12m

https://www.capfriendly.com/post_tax_calculator/max-pacioretty

I don't think this takes into account the 50% home tax rate, 50% distributed-across-away-games, so the real savings is likely lower, but nonetheless - extremely reasonable term and $$ for him for Pacioretty from the Vegas side

It’s a much more reasonable extension than Wheeler’s. I’m guessing the general terms were worked out before the trade. I’d be shocked if Vegas made that deal without knowing what it’d take to re sign him

I implore people to listen to the very start of the video for the "hahaha, anyway..."

All that aside, this is one of the most insane videos I've ever seen, and a cringe-inducing attempt at spin management ahead of Karlsson getting moved.

End of the video sums it up: "You get excited because (the young players) are excited, gets me excited, gets all of our fans excited, and our sponsors. So it's gonna work out! I think we're looking forward to a great, great coming year, I really think that the fans are going to be supportive. We've got some great fans, these are great, great hockey fans, great sponsors, and we just gotta give them the hope that they know, that we know what we're doing, and that translates into the team knowing what they're doing and putting some wins together. Shooting for the Stanley Cup! No less."

Hope that's nothing family related, seems extremely sudden.

Ottawa at around 22% capacity on season ticket sales, with a bunch of those being Melnyk's sponsors I'm sure

More Ottawa news:

I'll have a story online tomorrow explaining what's happening in the Caryk/Karlsson application that's being heard Friday. Having read both sides material, I don't think this story is going away any time soon.

Here's the article:

https://theathletic.com/518822/2018/09/12/analysis-why-are-monika-caryk-and-melinda-karlsson-going-to-court-on-friday/

Sorry it's behind a paywall. It's pretty long and I don't have time to sufficiently summarize all of it, but it does a really good job of summarizing a bunch of legal aspects of the case. Basically Caryk is filing a claim for Karlsson to disclose any evidence to why she believes Caryk is responsible for the online harassment. Caryk swears under oath that she isn't responsible and is demanding the information to clear her name.

IMO Karlsson's wife does not come across well here and Hoffman's wife does. Karlsson's lawyer also can't write for shit.

The SJHL’s Humboldt Broncos are in the first period of their first game since the accident. The pre-game moment of silence was tough to watch.

I can’t really figure out what SJS would give up. They don’t really have a great farm system. I guess Timo Meirer would probably go, but I don’t know what else. They don’t have much that I’d be enthusiastic about acquiring.

Edit: they also don’t have a first round pick

San Jose is really going all in on the next few seasons. They’re going to be crippled after 4-5 years when their core is in their mid-late 30’s and still on high money long term deals. Assuming extending Karlsson is part of this

So a couple of established, okay NHLers, a couple of okay prospects, and a couple of what will presumably be late round draft picks. Not great.

It is not. Huge price to pay for possibly 1 year of Kaarlson.

Also it looks like the Senators protected themselves from another Mike Hoffman situaiton.

"Interesting condition on Karlsson trade: If he appears on the reserve list of any Eastern Conference team this season, SJ must send another first-round pick to OTT by 2022.

Call that the Mike Hoffman Clause."

There’s another conditional pick in there if SJS signs him.

I don’t think that is a great return even if it is treated as a rental. Paciorrety arguably brought a better return.

So, it is ok now if I don't hand Tampa the division crown just yet? Are we done handwringing over that? Great.

Feel badly for the folks in Ottawa. They continue to underwhelm. Wonder how long it will be until they are moved to Quebec City. Great deal for San Jose though. They seem like favorites in the West now.

Sharks prospect report had these players as 3 and 4 in their system:

https://theathletic.com/471198/2018/08/15/nhl-farm-system-rankings-no-17-san-jose-sharks/

3. Josh Norris, C, Michigan-Big Ten

Norris had a decent freshman season. His main asset is his hockey sense. He’s a very smart two-way player who can play on both special teams. Norris has skill, but I wouldn’t call it high-end. There are stretches where he can fade into the background offensively, and then he’ll stand out with a very nice pass or deke. He skates well, but he doesn’t have a ton of pace to his game. I find him as a very steady all-around center who lacks a game-breaking element but has good athletic traits and is more of a long-term bet.

4. Rudolfs Balcers, LW, San Jose-AHL

Balcers had a great first pro season, as the best player for the Barracuda, and had a decent World Championships with Latvia. Balcers is a skilled forward, but what stands out the most to me is his hockey sense. He has great vision and overall offensive instincts. He can play at a pro pace and show the intellect to make plays at both ends of the rink. He’s not a big forward and only an average skater, but he makes defensive plays due to his work ethic and hockey IQ. I have some skepticism on his overall upside when I pick apart his skill set, but he keeps producing at a high level.
For context they were given the same "LEGIT NHL PROSPECT" ranking as Bruins' prospects UV, Studnicka, JFK, and Frederic

I can see 3 hundred point teams, 3 50 point teams, and 2 teams that fight for the WC. Really think there's going to be clear separation between those 3 groups quickly.

I’m not sure I see Buffalo doing anything. They have a good first line but they’re relying on a bunch of kids and middling vets otherwise. Their D has potential but I doubt Dahlin will come in and light the league up as a rookie. And their goalie situation is a certified dumpster fire.

I’d probably tier the Atlantic:

Good: Tampa, Toronto, Boston, Florida
Year away: Buffalo
Bad: Detroit, Montreal
Tire fire: Ottawa

I wouldn’t sleep on Florida. They have some great players and were one of the best teams in the second half of last season. Added Hoffman to a very good forward group, and they also have a promising rookie in Borgstrom.

Buffalo has much improved depth. G is a concern, Hutton as a starter is unknown. I don’t think it is out of the realm of possibility they push for a playoff spot if Dahlin hits the ground as a #1 and a difference maker right off the bat, as well as Mittlestadt playing a capable #2 C role.

I think there could be 4 100 point teams, I wouldn't sleep on Florida either. They had 96 points last season and added Hoffman.

I also think the 4 worst teams in the league could be in the division, although they get to play each other a bunch so they probably won't finish last in points.

Buffalo losing ROR is huge. They were the worst team in the league last season and lost their best player. Skinner and Dahlin probably replace his value, I'm just not seeing where they got significantly better.

Detroit and Montreal were also pretty awful last season and lost their best players.

Ottawa is Ottawa.

Funny how this sort of thing happens when he goes from making $7 million to $3.3 million (and then a million each in the followinf 3 years). He played 82 games each of the last 3 seasons.
