Not sensing much hype for Apple event today but here is what it looks like for new iPhones.

Looks like iPhone 8 will be the last of the bezel phones. New lineup are all iPhone X variations.

iPhone Xs - basically gen2 5.8" iPhone X
iPhone Xs Max - 6.5" version of Xs
  • iPhone XS/XS Max storage sizes: 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB
  • iPhone XS/XS Max colors: Space Gray, Silver, and Gold

iPhone Xr - 6.1" budget version with single lens camera in new colors
  • storage sizes: 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB
  • iPhone XR colors: Black, White, Red, Yellow, Coral, and Blue

Presumably new watch stuff available as well. Anybody watching? Anybody care?

So how to X owners unlock their phones quickly under a desk during a meeting? I really don't care for the lack of a fingerprint scanner and wondering how clunky it can be. I hate the idea of announcing with my face that I have an expensive phone on me, especially given I travel a lot to places that being obvious with your phone is a no-no.

Not that hard to be honest. Once your phone is trained to know your face you just look at your phone and flick up.

i actually agree with you here and disagree with soxhop (shocker). you have to present your face fairly square up to the phone - glancing down at it doesn't work. definitely times i didn't want to point my face at my crotch in a meeting to unlock it. of course you can always type the passcode in to unlock it but the finger scanner was def easier for sneaky unlocks

Ah, okay. I figured as much but wanted to confirm. I use the hell out of the home button to bounce between apps and such so I guess I'll find out just how backwards this "progress" goes.

the home button going away doesn't matter - you do a slight flick up at the bottom of the screen to do the same function as the home button. its even easier as you dont have to locate the home button. its more an issue for unlocking.

I wouldn’t be shocked if the next gen iPhones have better 3D cameras so unlocking is easier.

(Just like the 2nd gen Touch ID was easier to use than the first generation Touch ID.

Home button going away you get used to quickly. No big deal. I hate the Face ID, though. Sunglasses, unlocking in bed when half your face is in a pillow, unlocking to make a call while driving when you don’t want to look at the screen, unlocking while skiing with a helmet and goggles ...there are all of these little moments that crop up when it is a lousy solution and you end up using the code, which is a step back from the fingerprint.

I often drive with my phone mounted to windshield or dash. Would the phone be constantly waking and sleeping with this set up?

What are the chances of walking into a store and getting an Xs Max on Friday or Saturday next week? I am upgrading from a 7Plus so last time I got a phone, I watched one of those tracker websites and secured one at a nearby Apple about a week or so after launch.

Is my best bet to wake up at 3AM and go through the online process to try to secure one for delivery on Friday?

I use my iPhone 6S a TON and only have like 25gb used. I have no idea unless you're shooting constant video and saving to the phone why you'd need 512gb.

I'm undecided on the Xs or the Xs Max or whatever the fuck stupid name it is. That's probably too big for me, it's the same form factor as a Plus I believe.

Wall Street not impressed by these phones, Apple stock down 1.4%.
I mean, it was 190 before the last earnings report on 8/1, so let’s put the drop from 225 to 222 today in some context.

Agreed 512 is ridiculous. I consider myself a HEAVY user (12,000+ photos on my phone just checked) and I currently use 90gb of my 128 7Plus. I will probably get the 252, but with streaming music and the cloud, I don't think I need it.

As much as I would like the camera upgrades that Xr is pretty appealing all around upgrade from my iPhone 7. I can live with the lower res screen and no 3D touch. That said I'll probably hold on to my 7 for another year and then look at whatever Pixel options are current.

The battery life drop is fairly significant in the XR. I agree otherwise, but the Xs camera will be still quite a bit better and that's a dealbreaker for my usage. Better camera = what I'll buy.

Yep, the camera is a significant motivator for me too which is a big reason I have stuck with iPhone for so long. However the Pixel camera is pretty amazing. I can probably justify $1,000 for a phone but on the other hand. Fuck. $1,000 for a phone.

Maybe. Mine wakes lots of times when I’m not trying to wake it.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m still immediately going to upgrade my X to an extra Max excessive X or whatever the heck it is, but I think FaceID has lots of flaws.

I have to say that it seems to learn. I’m good with glasses on, quick glance, etc now.

It is the number one used item in my life. $1100 spread out over 24 months at 0% interest is fine by me, and at the end they are usually worth $300-$500 in resale value.
This is where I'm at. It's a lot of money, but it's physically in my hand for like...6 hours a day? Pretty much any improvement is worth it given how much I use it.

I'm all in this year on updating my phone. I haven't had a new iphone in close to 4 years. Normally I just wandered into the local AT&T store and pick one up since it was generally long after the release rush. This year is a bit different, I want to get one ASAP before heading to Europe next month. It looks like I can pre-order on the Apple site on the 14th and select the carrier and model or maybe I just order through AT&T site. Any advice and tricks to doing this? And how long does it normally take to get one in your hands after ordering? This is my first rodeo doing it online. Going for the XSMax.

In case you were wondering, the headphone jack is still gone and the dongles that used to be free will now cost you $9 dollars.

I was 100% against the headphone jack being gone but honestly I couldn't tell you where that dongle was (har har, joke joke) for the last 10 months. The only time I ever thought of it was on a Jetblue flight when i had lightning headphones.

I love TouchID, but when I'm skiing i have gloves on usually and when my hands are wet or was wet (after shower, swimming etc.), hands are dirty or there's moisture on the the sensor it doesn't work. Neither one is 100%. I enter my passcode a number of times during the day.

What’s the details on the face unlock? I don’t use any lock on my phone, I don’t need it; can you turn it off all together, like you can the fingerprint? I’m moving up from a 7, I was planning on just moving up to an 8 when this released and the 8 dropped.

It’s a user-activated setting, just like the fingerprint.

I expected as much, but good to know.

So, I’m thinking I might just go to an X given that info. I’m clearly going to have to adjust to a bigger screen by force at this point. I’m not seeing anything in the Xs that would drive me to pay (presumably) twice the price on a lease per month.

Honest question, why not go blue tooth at this point? I'm an Android guy, but on both platforms, I'm pretty shocked at the people on trains or airports that are still using wired headphones.

I've got two pairs of bluetooth headphones. My small exercise ones that I use whenever I'm on the T, and my over ear noise canceling ones that I use for flights.

The bigger issue that I've seen is that mini-jack headphones were (are except for iPhone) universal. That meant no need to carry a dongle in order to use them on a plane, at the library, on a computer at work or school, etc. I teach video production at a high school and suddenly a lot of my students don't have headphones to plug into the iMacs they edit on. The computers are not set up with Bluetooth so the options are dongle or second set of headphones.

There's a lot more to headphone use than your phone.

Looks like it. They may still make them for India or something, but in the US looks like they're done.
I went to the online chat at AT&T to ask for the link to the SE. They only have Space Gray in 32GB I think.
I was waiting for them to drop the price, but they are just dropping it, but I expect a limited supply until they run out
