I'd stick with Brown and Tatum. Do the due diligence on all scenarios, of course, but I'm trying to build around those 2 as they grow into their roles.

I'd consider Kyrie for Kawhi, if they think a PG-less lineup with Horford and four wings is playable.

I wouldn’t have the guts to try it but I’ve always wondered about the PG-by-Committee approach.

Horford
Tatum
Kawhi
Brown
Hayward

On paper, that’s a team with switchable wings that could create a ton of matchup problems. The whole “get LeBron switched onto Rozier” strategy wouldn’t have worked as well with this lineup. The question for me is who chases around the quick guards but, in theory, you’d potentially have Smart/Rozier if that became a problem.

On offense, you have a bunch of guys who are good secondary ball handlers who can shoot and it would allow Tatum to grow into an alpha role on offense.

The Kawhi stuff is going to be very interesting and probably the most important offseason story next to The Decision III.

That may be a problem, but it is probably more so a problem on the other end of the floor, where that small/quick guard has to deal with Brown or Tatum or whoever in the post. I would take that tradeoff any day.

#1 could happen, but only if (a) the Spurs agreed and (b) Kawhi's medicals check out (I'm skeptical on that one).

#2 is never, ever ever gonna happen. Reporter loses a lot of credibility even proposing that.

If they legitimately made an offer in February, they probably aren’t deterred on the medical front. If they flipped Kyrie I guess you keep Rozier and roll out Rozier/Brown/Hayward/Leonard/Horford with Tatum/Smart/Morris rounding the 8 man core rotation. You’d be adding Hayward and Leonard to the team that just went 7 games.

In this scenario the biggest problem aside from placing our wings in challenging circumstances chasing quicker 1's from 35 to 94 feet which is not really fair to them (I'll compare this to not replacing Baynes and forcing Horford against Howard, Drummond, etc for 35 min) would be our initiators ability in getting to his spot on the floor with his dribble. This is too extreme as ballhandling and executing high pick-n-rolls is so crucial today. You'll still have to have Rozier/Smart/Larkin clone on the floor with this unit to best utilize the wings while challenging the opponents PG in getting to their spot with the dribble.

If anything, the trade for Kawhi wouldn't be Kyrie or Hayward. It would center around Jaylen or Jayson with picks and a resigned someone to make up the salary filler.

Brown + Smart + picks for Kawhi.

Roll out a Kyrie, Hayward, Kawhi, Jaylen, Horford lineup with Rozier, Morris, Baynes, Theis as the main bench guys.

That's a very nice rotation but no thanks.
Roster gets really expensive in 12mths with Kawhi and Kyrie looking for max deals

Brown/Tatum = untouchable unless we are talking about Brow

Hold firm on Kyrie + Morris for Leonard+

This keeps the Spurs very competitive in Pops final days

Kawhi is very likely to be a one year rental; which is why it's a hard pass on any trade that includes any of Brown/Tatum/Hayward.

I doubt any team would trade for Kawhi without assurances that he'd re-sign with them. I guess nothing's a guarantee (see Dwight in LA), but agents and teams have these discussions before trade talks get too far.

Well, here was my thinking. You trade Brown + Smart + a pick, and you roll with Kyrie, Kawhi, Hayward, Tatum, and Horford next year. May require some other moves to stay under the tax, but that is one hell of a team.

After next year, you would expect both Kyrie and Kawhi to decline their option. However, both of them will probably only want to sign a 2 year deal so as to sign their next contract as 10 year players worth 35% of the cap. If you can convince both of them to sign 2 year deals, there would be a hefty tax bill in 2019/2020 as you have Kawhi and Kyrie making 30% of the cap on top of Hayward's 32.7 mill, and what is a likely to be picked up player option in Horford at 30.1 mill.

However, Horford is off the books the following year. Hayward is likely to pick up his 2020/2021 option, thus you are rolling with three max players in Kawhi, Kyrie, and Hayward.

Then, all three of those guys would be free agents that offseason, and Tatum would be up for his extension. That would be a wild offseason trying to figure out who the hell to give the money too.

I wouldn’t have been surprised if Ainge offered up Brown+ at the deadline, but I could have also seen him offer something like Smart, Morris, Baynes, Lakers/Kings pick, LAC pick, Memphis pick, and ‘18 and ‘20 Celtics picks. That would have been an aggressive offer but likely too much uncertainty for SAS to accept.

I could still see something like that being offered with a sign-and-traded Smart going home to TX, along with Morris and all those picks. You’d get one incredible year with all those wings rotating minutes and allowing Hayward to ease back into the game. Then there would be numerous permutations of keeping a re-signed Kyrie/Kawhi, or re-trading them, or eating a massive tax bill for one year and then letting Al walk.

Al is opting out next summer.

That’s probably good for the C’s 2019-20 payroll (no one’s giving him a 4-year max that extends through his age-36 season, so his cap number will dip a bit), but it’s unlikely the C’s will have the option of running out a fully loaded squad in 2019-20, then getting back to fiscal sanity by letting Horford walk.

This is Danny Ainge and he was so far away from what the Spurs would consider that they didn't even bother with any sort of counter. It was probably something like Morris, Smart and our 27th pick.

I am highly skeptical that Horford opts out. If he isnt getting a max deal, the numbers have to favor him taking the option. He has to think that he can get close the same deal in 2021 as he would get in 2020. At least in terms of yearly salary if not number of years.

Horford will be 35 in 2021 though. I don't see him playing out the deal to hit FA at that age. Much more likely scenario imo is an opt-out with us signing him to something like a 3/$80-90m so he gets his two additional years locked up. It's all about securing guaranteed years when you are at that age.

I think this is what happens as well.

Similar to Paul Pierce in 2010. He opted out of his last year at 21.5M, which he knew he wouldn't get in salary on a new deal, to re-sign with Boston for 4/61.

My favorite thing about Ainge is that he built a reputation for fleecing other GMs to the point that people became wary of even talking to him for fear of being charmed, and was still able to pull off one of the greatest fleeces of all last year, with his counterpart thinking that Ainge was getting fleeced for once. Even when he loses a deal (just read the commentary here last year, including mine), he overwhelmingly wins the deal.

Al/Boston/Stevens have become a love affair that will be tough to break. I 100% think he will hang around, and wouldn’t be surprised if he took a little less to that effect as the young guys come up for their first big contracts.

Is it true that GMs dont speak to Ainge out of fear of being fleeced? I think his greatest hits have all been confluences of extraordinary circumstances rather than a silver tongue.

The Lakers absolutely would assuming they are in the process of putting together a "Super Team" by signing LeBron and his best buddy Chris Paul. One could argue that the only obstacle in this happening is agreeing with the Spurs on proper compensation.

The Spurs agreeing to trade Kawhi to their hated rival is a rather large obstacle. I view that as incredibly unlikely to happen.

I think if it involved Ball and Ingram the Spurs might consider it.
Possible but they might as well trade Aldridge as well. They’re in a bit of a tough spot here. Their best course of action is to repair their relationship with Kawhi and I think they will.

Odds have to favor the idea that he and LeBron have been working together on their next destination.

Swing and a miss! LeBron/George/Kawhi is totally happening. Really interested to see how SA plays this.

Seems to be lining up for a Lebron + Kawhi + PG/CP3 to join forces on the Lakers. If my memory is correct, LAL has to renounce all FA's, including Randle, to have enough money for Lebron + PG. If they want Lebron + CP3 they have to find a taker for Deng's contract (don'tt hink stretching it gives them enough space).

Would then require Ball + Ingram for Kawhi? Or Ball + Kuzma + salary + picks?

This takes some drama out of the LBJ sweepstakes.
Fine by me. LA is about as good as we could have reasonably hoped for LeBron, outside of him staying in Cleveland. If this happens, we hope for George being the third instead of CP3.

The scenario you propose would have a lot of ripple effects/questions attached. For instance:

1. If the Lakers get LeBron, Kawhi, and PG13, does PG play shooting guard? Otherwise there seems to be some redundancy there

2. If CP3 leaves the Rockets, is that a step backwards for them or a blessing in disguise (not having to re-sign him to a massive contract that will age badly)?

3. Couldn't the Spurs file some kind of grievance against Kawhi for refusing to play when medical reports said he was good to go? Pretty sure I couldn't get away with that at work.

4. If Lonzo ends up in SA somehow, what's the over/under on number of minutes Pop will be able to stand Ball family nonsense before retiring outright? :)

Ugh this is going to happen isn't it. At least the Celtics will be favorites in the east. I still think GS is better than whatever the Lakers end up with but man them and Houston, what a conference that will be.

This guy seems like a baby. How exactly did the Spurs betray him and not vice versa? They weren't the ones playing fortnite or whatever during the playoffs.

Either way, NBA is fun as always and I'm glad we didn't end up with him for Tatum or Brown in February.
