Baseball is back! Yes, I know. It's college baseball. But, any baseball is better than no baseball. Spring is on its way.

The Skip Johnson Era has begun at the University of Oklahoma with a 6-3 win over Indiana. Looking forward to taking my son to see OU in action.

MYRTLE BEACH!!!!
Going to see Coastal Carolina play today. Headed to Clemson to visit my kids next weekend and they have a series with Dallas Baptist. So looking forward to catching some of that.

With my son a senior in college, this is pretty much the last year kids he played with/against growing up are on a college roster. The 4 hitter for Coastal and the 5 hitter for Clemson are kids we've known since they were 10 year olds. So it will be good to see them takes some hacks.

Well, Mount St Mary’s is scheduled to open the season tomorrow, in Emmitsburg MD, against Coppin State. Ambitious scheduling...

I may not get to as many games this year...but the season highlight should be a three game series in May at Florida State (ranked #3 at season start).

Citizens of Colorado, or to be more precise high school baseball players from Colorado, aren't welcome at Texas Wesleyan University. Make that former Texas Wesleyan Coach Mike Jeffcoat.

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/baseball-coach-fired-for-refusing-to-recruit-colorado-player-over-weed-laws/

The rejection email reads:

Thanks for your interest in our program. Unfortunately, we are not recruiting players from the state of Colorado. In the past, players have had trouble passing our drug test. We have made a decision not to take a chance on Student-athletes from your state. You can thank your liberal politicians. Best of Luck wherever you decide to play.

The Skip Johnson era is looking good. After beating TCU last night, OU moves to 7-0 in the Big 12. The pitching is pretty good (Irvin and Perez are solid), though I wish he'd give up on Berry as closer. Kyler Murray, Sooner quarterback, is definitely a dangerous hitter with two home runs last night. (I have yet to witness a Murray bomb myself; he tends to strike out at the games I attend. He's an "all or nothing" kind of guy.)

Stetson's Logan Gilbert and North Florida's Frank German dueled in front of 30 or so scouts last night and didn't disappoint. Gilbert took a no-hitter into the 7th before giving up three runs and German pitched 9 (Stetson is pretty anemic with the bat, but still) giving up only 3 (1 earned). The best part, 11-innigs of baseball in 2:38.

The Longhorns came from behind and walked it off against TCU last night. That win, coupled with Oklahoma State's loss, put the Horns in position to clinch the regular season Big 12 title with a win today. That would be their first regular season title since 2011.

I still can't wrap my head around the Longhorns having an actual offense after so many years of that small ball horse shit. I hate that Skip never really got the chance to take over the team but I don't hate that the team appears to be turning it around.

College coaches are awful.

I thought the Stanford coach was bad when he let his starter throw 130 pitches in 7 innings. That was until the FSU coach let his pitcher throw 133 including bringing him back after a two and a half hour rain delay when he had already thrown 109 pitches before the rain delay. Both teams lost on walkoff homeruns. Players deserved better, coaches deserve worse.

I don’t follow college baseball that closely but Texas making a Super appearance in a rebuilding year is a pleasant surprise.

Some crazy baseball today.
Tennessee Tech shocks Ole Miss by winning 2 today and moving on to the Supers. This means Texas will host.

Duke also wins 2 at Georgia to move on. Texas Tech will host Duke.

Florida Atlantic beat #1 Florida and is now ahead in Game 2 2-0 in the 1st inning. The Gators have been the best team in the country all year long yet are in danger of their season being over.

And doing it by beating kicking the shit out of aggy at the Disch was a delicious cherry on top.
FTFY

Times like these I really wish Skip were still with the Horns. I might have been able to go to one of the games this weekend. Fat chance now - at least not without paying out the nose.

Carolina 7 Stetson 4 in the first game of the Chapel Hill Super Regional. Cody Roberts and Michael Busch had homers for the Heels and they staved off a Stetson rally in the top of the ninth.

Late games on Sunday both went to extras. U Dub goes to Omaha for the first time ever, taking down Fullerton in the 10th 6-5. Miss St and Vandy are deadlocked 6-6 in the top of the 11th. Do or die baseball is so, so good.

Mississippi State won 10-6 in 11. To Omaha they go.

Texas and Tennesse Tech play at 1 p.m. Eastern today to decide who goes to Omaha. Hook 'em!

I'm watching without sound so I can't be sure but it looks like Tennessee Tech's pitcher Ethan Roberts was tossed for putting a substance on the ball. I don't know much about him but it sure seems like it couldn't have happened to a more deserving assbag.

WOW. Texas shuts down the best offense in the county back-to-back games. On to Omaha. I don't follow college baseball until the tournament but know this is an improbable run for Texas.

Oh hell yes! This is such a bonus. This was supposed to be a bridge year, but freaking Kody Clemens put the team on his back and carried it to Omaha. Maybe he can reprise his dad’s ‘83 title.

We will need more consistent hitting to make an impression in the CWS but the pitching and defense are such a treat to watch. I also liked their maturity in not having a stupid dogpile celebration. No one has won anything yet.

Texas’ tradition continues. No dogpiles unless you win the NCAA title.

Auburn outfielder just knocked ball over the fence so Florida is going to CWS with an extra inning walkoff!

Edit. Would have been a good catch but ball off his glove for homerun. That has got to hurt.

Big win for UNC - starting pitcher Luca Dalatri could only go 2/3 of an inning (dead arm) and so they had to burn through several pitchers, but they put eight runs on the board and that was enough to get the win over #3 Oregon State 8-6.

Getting to Omaha was gravy. It sucks they never really put up much of a fight but I'm not at all disappointed. Considering where they were just two years ago, this season can be seen as nothing but a smashing success.

Yeah. This was meant to be a bridge year. But Pierce and the coaching staff did an amazing job and we got better all year. Looking forward to more great Longhorn baseball in the coming years. Texas has played in half of all the CWS ever played.

Going to a deciding game tomorrow night. Arkansas lets a foul pop drop between 3 guys that would have been the final out for the win. OSU batter then singles in the tying run and the next guy goes yard to win 5-3.

Just another heartbreaking loss to add to the collection. This one was extra-special though, getting all the way through 26.2 outs of the damn title game before blowing it. Ah well, awesome win for OSU.

Matchup between the schools of the two handsomest Red Sox outfielders ever.
Looking forward to game 3.

Hogs will throw their usual third starter. Almost everyone available except the closer. OSU has used all of their best arms up. They’ll probably start their closer, who pitched a short ninth tonight, and then might get some more out of Able who pitched an efficient 7th and 8th. After that who knows. Expect the bats to finally come alive.
