I’m not sure they did enough to win tonight but Jesus if that wasn’t among the most poorly officiated game I’ve seen in a long time... wow. Embarrassing.

In a game Tampa had to have and came out flying, the Bruins stayed within a goal all night. A call or a bounce and they could be 2-0. This was never going to be easy, and I like how the Bruins are playing as they come home.

Two brutal turnovers by the 1st line, and the other lines were mediocre at best. But if not for the officials, possibility that they win or at the very least get it to OT. I'm not terribly concerned.

As a Lightning fan ...I'll say this....the officiating was atrocious...the double minor was a bad call, but you can at least can make a case that it's tough to see the contact when sticks are high....and of course, that was a slash on Stralman. Series is destined to go at least 6, probably 7 ...

I can handle supporting a team when it loses, when the deserve to lose due to their own poor play, or the better play by the opponent.

What sends me off the deep end and enrages me like a child throwing a tantrum is when the team I support is robbed by embarrassing officiating. Just sends me off the deep end with rage.

Agree. Thing that is keeping me more calm than usual is that the Bs did not play well. Just need to play good hockey in Boston.

Cassidy on Marchand’s breakaway: “Obviously, he slashed him right on the hands. I just think it’s unacceptable to miss that call. It’s a hit on the hands. On the hands is usually automatic ... affected the game ... the breakaway, that should be called.”

Officiating is pretty shitty in all the majors. Really need more of a meritocracy and make it a full time gig.
It's a full time gig in the NHL. The refs make about $250,000 USD. They should be subject to getting sent down to the AHL if they suck, but the union would never allow that.

I’m sympathetic to this in general. It makes me very angry that inconsequential bullshit like a skate being a millimeter offside as Nap mentioned can be reviewed and take goals off the board but can’t be used there. I don’t think any sport but tennis has really figured out replay.

I know they don’t work other jobs like nfl zebras, but I doubt they work out, watch video, etc half as much as the players do.

By full time, I mean work a full week like the rest of us saps - hone your craft so the next guy in line doesn’t take your job...same as the players

Evaluated for what? They have a union - they’re guaranteed to get paid, no?
Tomorrow I'll dig up the article about the fitness tests they're put through. It's no joke.

NHL officiating has a long way to go but it's not due to lack of effort. Those guys work hard.

You most likely get paid whether or not you do a shitty job at work. I imagine you don’t strive to do shit work. Not a perfect analogy but personal pride I’m sure plays a part in this.

Well sure, the officials work hard. Most working stiffs try hard, but at some point if you can't get shit right you either get fired, or if in a union get "reassigned".

That’s dead wrong for me and many Americans. Need to work hard, hit goals, etc to maintain and grow one’s compensation and/or move up.

Pride is absolutely a motivator as well, but it’s normal human nature to settle if your job is virtually secure and your comp doesn’t change much...even if someone else is nipping at your heels talent wise. All the major sports have refs who are protected. I have no idea why the leagues are afraid to blow up those unions. No one goes to watch the officials

I watch sports to see the players performing at the peak of their abilities. Poor officiating robs us of that. The Bruins played kinda shitty and probably would’ve lost of their own accord tonight, but we’ll never know.

When the announcers show highlights demonstrating the inconsistencies, and the postgame makes it a key point, then you know there’s a problem.

Which is why i explicitly stated it’s not perfect. Refs are basically cost centers.

Regardless, how many people do you think are willing to schlep it in Syracuse, Wilks-Barre, and Ontario, CA to build a legitimate base of referees nipping at NHL ref heels, all for the blistering salary of $250k?

A big part of sports involves bitching about the officiating. Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, years ago we were bitching. In 1976 Pats got screwed by a phantom roughing the passer call. That's just one of thousands. Now we have instant replay in the NFL and we still bitch about it. It will never be "perfect". All you can hope for in the NHL is to not miss the easy ones, and stop with the makeup calls.

That’s pretty good compensation when you consider the massive amount of free time and the comp’d meals and board. You could live virtually anywhere, and you could save a decent amount of money bc you spend nothing during travel times.

Of course, it’s also pretty good compensation period.

Sutherland and Furlatt aren't exactly nobodies either, over 15 years each under their belts. They both laid an egg in about a half-dozen clear-cut situations tonight. It is what it is.

So we should get replacement refs! That always works out!
What year was it when we had that vicious series against the Devils, where even the officials got so fed up they walked out after a suspension of the Devils’ coach was overturned after he had abused them in the tunnel after the game? Terry O’Reilly was coaching us. We got replacement refs in these ugly yellow sweaters. It wasn’t pretty.

Was that related to the “eat another donut” situation?

That was 1988 after Schonfeld told Don Koharski to "have another donut you fat pig", maybe the greatest chirp in hockey history.

Both of these points ignore the possibility that maybe they're the best in the world at what they do. There are no better options out there. Frankly the game moves way too fucking fast these days.

They can be better, and should, but finding other people to be even better isn't very likely.

Even the best have bad games. This was one of them. The Bruins also played shitty and didn't deserve to win, despite the shifty officiating.

There absolutely needs to be coach's challenges on non-judgment call penalties. The delay of game in the Toronto series, the High Sticking double minor tonight...those aren't judgment calls.

I think there are tons of guys who hang em up after playing in the minors who could be interested if there was an opportunity to grow and develop and become an nhl ref. The lack of a true meritocracy inhibits turnover and fresh recruits.

In short, we don’t know who COULD have become great officials bc the pipeline is diminished by the system as it exists today.

That's exactly right. I don't know want to hear that things can't be fixed. A lot of these bad calls, or non-calls can absolutely be fixed. It's called instant replay. Some fans don't like it, and some feel it might take too much time, but I am firmly in the camp of "Whatever it takes to get the call right, it's worth it." They're doing it for off-sides 10 minutes after a play ends, why can't they go back and review if an icing should have been called? Why can't they review a high stick and make sure that the guy that got hit didn't hit himself in the head with his own stick? Why can't they figure out if a guy cleared a puck over the boards or not?

It's clearly obvious that the refs aren't capable of getting the calls right on the ice, so review the fucking calls, and get them right. It's the only real solution to the problem.

Youre right, its hopeless, lets just do nothing then.
I in no way mean that. You are bitching about a problem but putting no effort in coming forth with a solution, which I was legitimately calling you out to do. Not sure how you interpreted my response as such. You’re underpants gnoming the issue and I think if you have a legitimate gripe, you should at least start thinking if a solution.
