On one hand, it will likely be lots of pointless and breathless conclusions about JG based on how he does without the starting LT and two of the best receivers in the NFL. On the other hand, as someone noted upthread, I don't have to watch.

They didn't do Pre-game Live or Half Time Live. Don't seem to be fully invested.
But they thought that fans might want to see some discussion from experts about what they just saw on the field? What a bunch of MORONS!

Tom E Curran going national this morning filling in for Dan Patrick. That 5 nights a week debate show really prepping him for this national gig.

Besides, based on a combination of his body language on the show and career trajectory thus far, my guess is that Curran absolutely loathes this new format. I have no doubt he would rather go back to being a beat writer and occasional commentator but saw the writing on the wall as to where the industry is going. And for somebody I assume has teenage kids, Curran surely knows his options are extremely limited.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to put it, but seems as good as any, Rob Bradford is absolutely horrible at radio. Having listened to pieces of his weekend show it's terrible. From the pacing, to the fake controversies (don't we get enough of this during the week if you're subjected to it) to just generally running a radio show it's awful. It's nice to see WEEI actually giving a shot to people like Treni, but Bradford has got to go.

Tomase has had enough of the NFL, except for Patriots games.

http://www.weei.com/articles/column/tomase-junior-seaus-legacy-cte-and-why-its-harder-ever-be-nfl-fan

As a sports writer and a sports radio host this is a strange stance to take. I know some of BBtL takes the same stance but I don't get it as a sports reporter.

if you can't watch the most popular sport how can you do your job?
I heard him today try to ramble through an explanation of this on K&C this morning. This take -- sincere or not -- is not exactly going to help widen his options of long term employment in sports journalism.

I'm not sure why he'd need to explain any further, I think that his column was pretty clear on what he doesn't like about football. And I think that it's a thought that's building momentum across the country. Jeff Pearlman has written about it, so has Joe Posnanski, Will Leitch and to an extent Drew Magary. Also a bunch of folks here have said similar things. I'm not exactly sure why his sincerity on this topic is being called into question.

I don't read a ton of Tomase (he's not my favorite writer) but I think that in this instance, he wasn't being a reporter but more a columnist. Put it this way, if his bogus story about the Pats videotaping the Rams' walkthrough didn't hurt his career, I don't think that writing a column about not liking football will hurt any future job searches.

I'm sure Kirk and Callahan called him a fucking pussy bitch cuck though, because they're the toughest!

I think it did though. He was basically ostracized from all Pats related coverage thereafter, and essentially was sidelined to only Sox/baseball coverage at the Herald. I think there has to be some leftover bitterness towards football in general from that time period for him.

I'm not sure his more recent move to WEEI.com was exactly a step up career move either, although he is now a regular on K&C, which has soared in the ratings.

HA! You pretty much nailed it. He's become sort of the token liberal for Gerry and Kirk to beat up on -- kind of like Juan Williams on Fox News.

I think that we don't really know the answer to that last question without knowing how much Tomase cares about his career. What I mean by that is if he wanted to work for a big media company, become a nationally known talking head, show up every day on ESPN -- then you're right, going to EEI is a step down.

But if he's happy being a semi-large fish in a semi-large pond, then EEI is the perfect place for him. He gets to go on the radio (he has his own show on the weekends with Treni, correct?), he writes and sometimes he's on TV. For a guy who started at the Lawrence Eagle Tribune, that's not bad.

As far as leaving the Herald goes, all of print media (aside from a few big papers -- the Globe being one of them) is a sinking ship. I would be shocked if the Herald is around in ten years. Even five might be too many. Tomase may have gotten out while the getting was still good. There's going to be a lot of sports journalists looking for jobs in a few years. Those EEI positions (which I assume are well-paid) are going to be plums.

You may be right about the football bitterness though. I happen to agree with his piece, so I won't entirely dismiss it.

What drives that assumption? No snark, I just assume all journalism/new media jobs pay shit.

On-air talent at EEI will always get paid, I think, but that's not ever going to be Tomase's bread-and- butter.
Dale said on Keefes podcast when he was a fill in / semi regular at WEEI after he lost his full time gig he was making $38k a year.

The main hosts get paid decent or a lot depending but Tomase isn't making shit for his role at WEEI most likely. Even look at Rich Keefe who was on 5 nights a week with Jones on 98.5 and a weekend show and he was never full time and didn't get benefits.

The old saying goes that you don't get into radio to make money. Only the top-eschelon guys make the big money.

Yup. I posted this in another thread a while back - a buddy of mine hosts the pregame and postgame radio show for for an AL West team (and he's the top TV fill-in guy when needed). He makes less than $40K a year. His wife pretty much supports him. If he quit tomorrow, they'd have 1000 candidates applying for the job even if the salary was half that.

Slightly off topic but another friend was an MTV VJ fill-in/correspondent back in the 90s. He loved the gig because it helped him get an enormous amount of women and drugs (MTV was actually cool back then) but he basically made minimum wage.

This is so true throughout the sports world. Unless you wear a uniform or are the head coach/manager you make peanuts. The team attorney for the Celts or the Bruins or any other team makes waaaay less than they would working for any other company.

My assumption was based on what he was probably making at the Herald and what it would have taken for him to leave that guaranteed paycheck for EEI. I have no idea what he was making at the Herald, but say (for a round number) he was at $100K. If you were Tomase (gahhhh!), wouldn't you want EEI to at least match that in order to jump?

Honest question, do you think he took less to go the EEI? After reading some of the responses, maybe he did. IDK.

Caveat: I am pretty sure that Tomase left the Herald of his own volition and he was not pushed out. I tried looking it up, but could find nothing that said otherwise.

Minor high jack, the number of colleges that have added sports management degrees infuriates me. It's an obvious money grab where they know that there is a 1% chance their graduates will actually ever get a decent paying job in sports management.

I wonder if there's any additional compensation to Tomase for posting any articles on WEEI.com

I've pretty much stopped listening to WEEI for the most part, which I never thought I would say. Unless Dale and Holley is on or the Sox, I've mostly switched over to podcasts and music. Wednesday, I decided on my way to work to listen to the mid-day show which was just beginning. It was a good sports day; with the world series starting the night before, the Celtics winning the previous night, the Sox hiring a new manager and the Pats in full-swing. So what does the show start off with? Lou Merloni trying to start a feud with Kyle Draper over Draper saying something critical about Lou's assessment of Al Horford on Boston Sports Tonight. Lasted about five minutes before changing over to music.

I can't stand Merloni - he comes off as an unlikable know-it-all.

I used to like him but now he is all schtick. He wanted to make himself the "Fire Farrell guy" but now that he's gone he'll have to find something else.

looks like once the dust settles, Felger moves to part time, Kayce Smith goes to Barstool and Michael Holley increases his role.

So out of the original 3 of Dickerson, Felger and Tanguay, Tanguay remains there the longest...

Not sure where to post this. On D&C i heard Tanguay and Minihane saying Holley would replace Felger on the Patriots postgame and ore game stuff. Taking a "step back."

I didn't hear the whole segment though

It was kind of discussed in the Dale and Holey thread. Felger got a new contract at 98.5 that evidently makes his TV appearances less necessary from a monetary standpoint

Wasn't sure where to post this. But Mike Giardi is leaving NBCSports Boston. He doesn't say where he's heading to, but says we'll see him "soon".

Neither station is owned by Beasley - they swapped Magic to Entercom for 98.5 during the whole CBS Radio sell-off.

Not to diminish your point, of course. But it's Entercom that owns both Magic and WEEI and uses staff for all of their stations.

I wonder what WEEI will do overnights with NBC Sports radio eliminating 80% of their programming? So far they’ve just been playing replays of the podcast.

Sadly yes I’m up and out at 4am quite a bit and noticed.

Went into effect 1/1. I believe they basically canceled all their programming except for Mike Florio, Rodney Harrison's Safety Blitz and they're coming out with a new afternoon show. They're more focused now on doing Sports Flash Updates as a service, which seems like a pretty limited market.

Oh wow, no more Leisuremen on Sunday nights. It's just Mike Florio's show on reruns.

It’s too bad that baseball - which is fundamentally a regional sport - is losing local voices on key media platforms.

I understand WHY it’s happening, but it still sucks.
