OK...this is my luddite question of the month. I have a Galaxy 8 and would like to play my Spotify in the car. Do I need to buy some sort of cable to connect or can this be done via blue tooth somehow so that the music will play through the speakers of the car. Yes, I'm this pathetic.

Thanks

What kind of car? Most newer cars have Bluetooth capability or you can plug a USB in.

Infiniti Q70. It has Bluetooth capability as far as I know, but does connecting mean I should be able to play the music from the phone and have it automatically run through the car speakers without doing anything more? i.e. just connect to bluetooth, and once I press play on spotify, presto?

Pretty much.

My car, once it connects, anything I select on my phone--music, podcasts, etc. play through car speakers.

Bleedred, you and I have the same car and I've got a Note 5. But yes, once you connect your Bluetooth to the car, it will play your spotify.

One issue that I've noted though, is that it takes my phone about 30 seconds to connect for audio listening in the car.
My phone connection to make phone calls is only like 10 seconds.

In my other vehicle (a sweet ass Toyota Sienna minivan), my Bluetooth connects the second I turn the vehicle on.

So it's a bit of a pain, but not really all that bad.

OK...I may not have waited out the 30 seconds and assumed I did something wrong. I'll check again tomorrow.

In my Prius you have to pair the phone's B/T with the car's B/T before it will be recognized. That only has to be done once but it will take some time for the two to sync on subsequent occasions (I switch between FM and B/T).

I don't know what that means. When I turn on bluetooth in the car, it connects to my phone (I click on "My-Car" on the phone). What else would I have to do to "pair the phone's B/T with the car's B/T"?

I don't know about your car but with mine it is necessary to set up the link to my phone. It won't work with the B/T in my wife's phone, or anyone else's B/T, unless the set-up is changed. My dealer did this for me. But think about it. Suppose you have four people with phones with B/T on in your car. Whose music would it pick? Would it answer every phone call?

That makes sense, but so far as i can tell, there is no option to set up the link to "my phone" only "my-car"

I don't know what to tell you but I do know that when I got a new cell phone the B/T didn't work with my car until the dealer set it up for me. But I have a 2013 Prius and maybe newer cars/phones/versions of Bluetooth work differently than mine. I just passed on what I went through.

Bleedred, thinking back, I did have a Bluetooth issue on the first Note 5 I received.
It would just not connect, but it wouldn't connect to anything and it was a bit of a known issue at the time, because I got the phone right when it came out.

I was given a 2nd Note 5 as a replacement and it has worked since I paired them up

So maybe see if you have issuing with the phone bluetooth connecting to anything. As charlieoscar said, you need to pair them first.

I don't need to connect my phone each time, it's paired and connects automatically (after my 30 second delay). But I don't need to do anything else.
Also, my Bluetooth on my phone is always on, I don't turn it off when I'm not using it

I think the initial pairing is the issue you are dealing with right now.

The other thing is that your phone may be connected for phone calls, but you also need to make sure that it connects for audio as well.
There can be two options. My van can connect my phone for calls and my daughters tablet for audio.

My 2016 ford expedition is pain. You have to go into settings and add the device and pair. You must do this when in park. Then once you've done that the next time you want to use it you have to go in and find the connect device option. There is a Bluetooth option button under a selection menu but it's uses until you find that connect device option that you must select everytime you enter the vehicle. Not to be confused with pair device.

If the phone is successfully completing the Bluetooth pairing, and you can make calls using the car speakers, the issue may be that you haven't selected the correct input. You'd have to switch your input to whatever your Bluetooth input is (in my Mazda, it's helpfully labeled "Bluetooth"). If your radio is set to the AM/FM antenna, the car won't play your Bluetooth audio - and it won't automatically switch when the pairing is detected. Much like a television, the correct input must be selected.

The other possibility - granted this is unlikely, given the car model - is that your car doesn't support Bluetooth streaming. This is the issue with my wife's Nissan. She can pair her phone and utilize the phone features but her radio doesn't support streaming. Given that Infiniti is part of the Nissan family, I can comfortably state that you need the navigation package in order to do this. If you do not, you'll need to use an auxiliary cable to listen to Spotify.
