One of the best hockey tournaments gets underway today. The B’s are well represented:

USA: Trent Frederic (center, ‘16 first round), Ryan Lindgren (defenseman, ‘16 second round), Jeremy Swayman (goalie, ‘17 fourth round)

Finland: Urho Vaakanainen (defenseman, ‘17 first round), Joona Koppanen (forward, ‘16 fifth round)

Sweden: Oskar Steen (forward, ‘16 sixth round)

The US enters as defending champs and probably slight favorites. They play Denmark at 8:00pm tonight. I believe NHL Network will carry the game. They play Canada on the 29th at Ralph Wilson, which is cool but kind of a bummer it’s not on the traditional NYE spot.

Yep, games are on NHL Network all day, starting at noon with Russia - Czech Republic.

It's baffling that the outdoor game is on at 3pm. Wtf?

I have no idea why they moved it off NYE. I thought maybe the Bills have a game on NYE, but they’re on the road.

This is something the NHL would do. Makes no sense.

Outdoor games should either start early enough to be played entirely under the sun, or late enough so it’s dark (and colder) the whole time.

Yep so on a weekday it should be later, on the weekend it can be earlier, in my opinion. Instead they’re shooting for minimal tv viewership.

Yeah just saw this...makes zero sense. Absolute prime time showcase event, and they throw it on a Friday afternoon at 3. Insanity

Remember this is a tournament. Game outside is scheduled for 3pm. If weather is a factor the game will be at 8pm inside.

I remember the last football game at Ralph Wilson Stadium immediately before the rink build for the 2008 Winter Classic - it was played in nearly horizontal rain, with insane wind.

“What if it’s like this for the hockey game?”

“No one ever asks that about football...”

I'm in Whistler on vacation the next week, so I will be watching a lot of this (every establishment has it on). I'm admittedly not a big hockey guy, but it's awesome to be in bars where everyone is into the games.

Not John Woll's finest hour last night. The US couldn't put together much of a consistent effort, but that game was still very winnable. It should be interesting to see how they bounce back this afternoon vs Canada.

And whats the deal with the attendance? Just pathetic so far. Couldn't have been more than a couple thousand people at the US game last night.

Weather has been brutal...I was in the region for Christmas but not worth the hour+ drive in bad conditions.

Also- US and Canada tickets are ~$50. I was going to see Sweden and Dahlin play for $15, but fifty is tough. And that’s a hockey mad region but not an economically thriving one.

I know why they’re there (Hockey Canada basically keeps the tournament afloat), but it’s so weird seeing nothing but Canadian companies on the boards.

Oettinger getting the start in net over Woll
Swayman has been significantly better than Oettinger and Woll in every category and they’re all in the same league too.

It’s a second guess, but go look at the stats of the three goalies. Only 1 is playing well.

Yes to the first one, but I’m sure the tournament in Sweden a couple of years ago had ads for Telus, Canadian Tire, and Sport Chek on the boards and ice.

sounds like the announcer is calling this game inside a library.
I don’t know if you’re getting the TSN feed, but they’ve been pointing out that there was a truck fire on the QEW, the major highway that runs from Toronto/Hamilton to Fort Erie/Peace Bridge, and that combined with delays at US Customs in Buffalo has a lot of fans still in Canada.

Absolutely insane that they're playing this game outside. It's going to be interesting to see the reaction when someone blows out a knee on a bad patch of ice.

Not much promotion of the tournament in the Rochester area... about 90 minutes east of Buffalo. You would think USA hockey would market more to youth hockey families.

That said... we went to Toronto last year for Christmas break and grabbed tickets for cheap.

This game is kind of a joke at this point. There's about an inch of snow on the ice.

Sounding the horn at the 10 min mark is dumb too. Don't unnaturally interrupt play. Switch at the first whistle after the 10 min mark.

No, I wish. The entire production was pretty shitty. Bad/Ill timed camera angles, lousy announcing, and lengthy snow delays. Happy for the W, but think these outdoor games are just a bit too gimmicky for me.

Great start for US, and cool moment. Bellows scores, and as he passes behind the net notices a guy wearing his dad's North Stars jersey, so stops to celebrate there.

Tied 2-2 with about 15 min left.

Too bad the weather sucks and there’s about 100 people in the crowd

Team USA wearing Bills-themed jerseys. Glad it’s in the semis at least and not in the finals. Should make them a lock.

0-0 3 minutes into the first. USA on the PK.
