The knocks on LaRussa, as I see them, are that 1) he is often credited with inventing the modern bullpen, which many SABR types see as a bad move, and 2) he was the manager in Oakland when steroids took off. (And he has a pretty big head.)

Did I miss any?

So he’s a hugely important figure in the history of the game, but not really for good reasons.

Yeah, I don't think he's being a GM again, but maybe another front office job that isn't just showing up now and then and being on a letterhead, which is what he'll be here.
See, I think that's where he's headed now. These types of positions. Ya know, cuz he's ooooooooold! Like E5 Yaz.

Yes, with the Diamondbacks, he hired Dave Stewart as GM. It did not go well, to put it mildly.

  • More from Olney, who reports that the Red Sox and three-time World Series-winning manager Tony La Russa discussed having him serve as rookie skipper Alex Cora’s bench coach. Instead, Boston hired La Russa as a special assistant to president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski and replaced previous bench coach Gary DiSarcina with Ron Roenicke. La Russa, 73, hasn’t been part of a coaching staff since he managed the Cardinals to a title in 2011.

Well I guess the Sox have the 'look the other way on PED use' role squared away. Couldn't have gotten a more qualified man for the job.

I hear you — LaRussa's A's and Cardinals have a special place in PED history — but you could say that about basically anyone who was in a professional baseball clubhouse in the 1990s.
