And certainly a contributing factor to the Sox exiting the playoffs in the first round the past two years. Key reason why it was time for Farrell to go.
I was wondering the same thing. Though you'd think that players playing NG through injuries that required surgery would be something that a manager, GM, and ownership would be talking about regularly, and get on the same page about.

Maybe nvalvo's approach is the better one here -- that the organisation as a whole bears responsibility for this. Or maybe JBS9 is right that the buck should stop with the manager. But something needs to change, because it didn't work this past year -- at least if the goal is a significant playoff run.
The problem this year is that all the backups were injured or ineffective, too.

Holt and Hernandez were supposed to be the backup infielders, but Hernandez went down before the season started. Then Holt got concussed before Sandoval was released, so Marrero and Lin had to come up, and neither could hit. It wasn't clear either were an upgrade over Xander after he got hit on the hand.

On the other side of the infield, Hanley couldn't play first all year and Travis was terrible, so they ended up having to stick with Moreland even after the broken toe.

Young never got it going, so it was hard to sit any of the outfielders. Trading for Davis seemed like a good idea, but he couldn't hit after joining the team, either.

The trade for Nunez worked out for a bit... and he blew out his knee.

There was just a ton of shit injury luck. Even a return to average health next year should result in a huge step forward offensively for the team.

Holt haters should be prepared to see more of him next year. He may not be the best utility guy in the world, but he's played in this park, is under team control, and plays a shit ton of positions with a left handed bat.

Just put out the new blog post
Thanks, and now have bookmarked you. A microfracture, you think? Interesting, and that's what I would have chosen too -- studies show that the long-term benefits are about the same between a microfracture and ACI (a fancy newer procedure where they grow someone's own cartilage in a lab, then implant it). Fingers crossed on the rehab.

Hope this surgery helps Pedey stay healthy a bit better. I know at his stage there are no miracles but he could still help the team healthy or even semi-healthy. Not like last season.

I'm a hater after the slash line he posted this year. But even with team control, swiss army knife defense, and being a lefty I can't imagine we can't find a better option. That's not even considering the risk of him losing time from another concussion. It's possible the Holt era is coming to a close.

If he were on another team we’d see him as a non-tender candidate.

Holt is only looking at an estimated arby salary of $2m, finished the year on a decent note, and offers a unique level of flexibility that could come in handy down the line if/when we have to spend a latter chunk of the season carrying Hanley on our bench (since we can't release him without triggering the option, and our usual "phantom DL trip" work around might prove problematic there).

I have my doubts he's getting Pedroia's spot, but would be betting on him getting tendered.

Or he bounces back from tough year which saw repeated bouts with vertigo. Hard to get untracked like that. I'm rooting for him.

If Nunez isn't broken, then sign him. If not, consider raiding the Twins.

Escobar or Polanco. They like Adrianza and Nick Gordon is knocking on the door.

I think Marco Hernandez is being forgotten here. I'm wondering if healthy, if he's the guy the Sox have slated to play second while Pedroia recovers.
I'm a little worried about planning on Hernandez being the answer early in the year (or even the primary utility man after that). The procedure he had essentially reconstructs the shoulder and puts bone in place to block the shoulder from dislocating again. It is highly successful in stabilizing the joint, but it does reduce external rotation range.

There's no way to know how much that reduction in range is going to impact his swing. Luckily, as a left handed hitter, it's his right shoulder which rotates externally during his follow through, but any time you alter the construction of the shoulder there is the risk of permanently diminished performance.

Maybe DRS can chime in with an opinion that means something, though. @DaveRoberts'Shoes ?

Hanley, Edro, Pedey. Quite a deficit at the beginning of '18.
And you might add Wright to that list as well.

As for the conversation on backup second basemen for next year, Lin may need to be part of the conversation.
