How can he start serving a 6 game suspension if he is not going to be on a team?
Although Brown remains unsigned after the Giants released him in October, he will start serving the six-game suspension immediately, starting with this week's games, a source told ESPN's Dan Graziano.

How can the NFL suspend the guy more/again for the same offense? Isn't that the same thing the judge ruled against for R. Rice in 2014?

Also, I thought players had to be employed and forfeit game checks if they're suspended. What is Brown suspended from exactly?

Are you new here?
It's the NFL. The commissioner feels like he can do whatever the fuck he wants without punishment.

Or more accurately the Union signed a CBA that said he can.
Didn't the court for the Rice case say you can't go back and suspend someone further for the same crime once the punishment is dished out? Rice got two games then they tried to suspend him indefinitely and the judge said no.

Also, how can an unemployed player be suspended? I asked because I do not get it and am not a lawyer. If Ray Rice signed with a team today, wouldn't he still have to sit out for one game since he was released midway through his two-game suspension?

If Josh Brown wanted to fight this the way Rice did, he'd probably win. But since he's not on a roster anyway, and probably wouldn't be for the next 6 games, he just accepts the decision and is available if someone needs a kicker late in this season/next year. There's very little advantage from him to be gained from fighting this.

He could maybe win a battle, but the league seems to be arguing that they got new evidence and are suspending him for different actions they now know about (the Brown thing wasn't 1 incident, there were several).
As to how they can suspend a non-rostered player... it happens a lot with free agents in every league. Until he retires officially he's a member of the NLFPA, a potential NFL player, and he is subject to suspension for the next 6 games he's on a roster.

Raiders put Seabass on IR. Back hurts. Probably the end of his career.

Except in this case Brown will serve the suspension while NOT on a roster.

Janikowski and TB12 are the only two players from the 2000 Draft still with their original teams.

One other player from that draft is still active

Shane Lechler, drafted by Oakland, now with Houston

Looks like a dislocated wrist for David Johnson. Kiss the 2017 season goodbye, Arizona.

Ravens announced they placed RB Danny Woodhead (hamstring) on IR and signed RB Jeremy Langford off practice squad.

Who doesn't love Woodhead? Unfortunately, he played 16, 3, 16, 2, and 1 (this year) since leaving NE.

lol what a hypocrite. How can Jones do this single-handedly anyway? Have other owners come to Jerry's call because of Zeke? Seems strange...

He's the ultimate hypocrite but I still support this. I'm sure you have good ole boys Rooney/Mara trying to push this through. Jerry Jones turns 75 next month and has a team that's good enough to win it all. He's going to do all he can to prevent Goodell from messing with that. I'm thinking that this only gets interesting if Kraft joins Jones but that seems unlikely.

More of the palace intrigue around Jones holding up Goodell's new deal. Wonder if this is more about Jones trying to embarrass Roger into quitting by forcing a huge salary cut.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has impeded the progress of contract negotiations aimed at an extension for NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, according to sources familiar with those talks.

"If not for Jerry," one person familiar with the contract negotiations said this weekend, "this deal would be done."

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is close to an agreement on a new five-year extension that runs through 2024. While a deal is likely to be completed, there are still issues to work out because talks have not progressed as expected.

While some owners believe a deal will be agreed upon, others aren't quite as sure thanks to Jones, who has interjected himself into the process of the NFL's six-man compensation committee, becoming the unofficial seventh member.

Jones is now being singled out by some owners and league executives as the reason Goodell does not have the contract extension that many expected to be in place before this season kicked off, per sources. Goodell's current deal as commissioner expires in 2019.

The increasingly edgy relationship between Jones and Goodell has sharpened to the point where Goodell's long-term future could be in question, according to league sources.

Answers could come soon. Next up is the compensation committee's conference call Wednesday, which is expected to produce a specific term proposal for Goodell, sources said. Jones will be included on the call, sources said.
Previously, Jones has denied he was a member of the NFL's compensation committee. But league sources say Goodell was informed that Jones, despite not being a member, would take part in the process within the same time frame as the commissioner was deciding the eventual six-game suspension of Cowboys star running back Ezekiel Elliott for violation of the league's domestic violence policy that is currently hung up in a court battle.

One league source said Jones now considers himself a representative of the remaining 26 owners who are not on the compensation committee that consists of chairman Arthur Blank (Falcons), Clark Hunt (Chiefs), Robert Kraft (Patriots), John Mara (Giants), Bob McNair (Texans) and Art Rooney II (Steelers).
One source familiar with the ongoing drama said Jones has argued persistently for months to the committee that other owners believe Goodell makes "way too much money" and demands a pay cut and a radical change in the formula that compensates the commissioner. Jones also believes several other employees in the league office are overcompensated.

Goodell's earnings of more than $200 million since he was elected commissioner in 2006 -- including a $44 million salary in 2015 -- is at the core of Jones' aggressive strategy in communicating with fellow owners.

"Jerry's not saying, 'Don't hire Roger.' He's saying, 'I hate this [proposed] deal; redo it,'" said one source.
But not all owners give Goodell full credit for fueling the league's economic boon, citing the participation of the owners themselves and indicators that troubled times may be on the horizon with uncertain TV ratings, a looming labor battle and a perceived weakening of the league's image.

One source even countered, insisting, "This is about money and a guy [Goodell] making way too much money on a grossly stupid contract for the job."

Why do people assume that Goodell is anything but a reflection of how the owners want this League run?

Rice would not make a dime of difference, which she undoubtably understands. I don't believe she would be into spinning awful things more artfully to the fans.

I wonder if the pats try and sign him (given our injury issues on offense)
Texans depth chart isnt exactly the '07 Pats at skill positions and he was a non factor and the WR depth issues (as of now) are short-term and with a potential in house reinforcement later in the year in Mitchell. Dont see it as a likely fit, but who knows.

And the whole Jerry is blocking Goodell's raise because he is mad angle is 100% Jones's swinging imaginary dick for PR. Goodell took one of his toys away and cut into his perceived power and standing. Jones needed to do something to "win" the perception of power back. It's been said by others before, but as much of a taint as Goodell is, he is a designated grenade jumper and paid handsomely to do so, though I think he has a bit more ego than his predecessors and some of his motivation is to knock down owners who get too big for their britches, particularly when the press starts talking about how they really run the league.

As to the bolded, I hope it's either sarcasm or you were born after 2001.
