Is this the first time she has been "addressed" by ESPN for her social media comments?

I'm not sure if I agree with the slap on the wrist. She's just not all that good. I love that she's outspoken about social justice and more people need to be but kind of makes ESPN hypocrites if they fired G38 and kept her around.

I don’t want to resurrect the Schilling debate, but the stuff he said to get fired and what Hill said are not comparable. She expressed some very partisan political opinions. He made numerous offensively racist and bigoted comments. There’s nothing hypocritical at all about treating them differently.

Right which is why I never said she should be fired. She's actually correct with most of the stuff she said but she might have violated the social media policy which is where the hypocrisy comes in. Schill was just racist plain and simple

On top of which all ESPN is doing is a calculus of how many viewers/sponsors will abandon them if they keep Schilling vs. how many will abandon them if they keep Hill. These are public figures and their employer only employs them and pays them on the assumption they draw viewers. Anyone offended by her comments are free to ignore ESPN or try to arrange some kind of boycott if they are that bothered by it, and then the next time Hill pulls something like this maybe she'll be shitcanned.

For the record, I think Schilling is scum, Hill sucks, and I don't watch anything on ESPN other than Monday Night Football.

+1.

I'll add this. Just checked her Twitter feed and she asks this rhetorical question:

"Do you know the difference between Twitter and TV?"

Sorry, but that is disingenuous and she knows it. Everyone in her position on a network like this -- without exception -- is strongly encouraged by the network to leverage the hell out of every social media platform in sight -- and that may be putting it mildly. It builds her brand, the show's brand and by extension ESPN.

That is precisely why ESPN issued its statement and, in fact, was required to do so as a practical matter.

Goddamn it -- at least be honest about what is going on here.

Man, conservatives only have control of the Presidency, Congress and the number one rated TV news network on cable. I wish those guys would get a break for once.

It's probably been mentioned before, but I was watching yesterday sportscenter, and realized they have SCAM right on the bottom right of the screen

I know it is SC:AM. for sportscenter AM, but all I saw was SCAM, which is a lot about how I feel about the network at the moment

Right there with you, in part as protest, and more so because I hate sports stories and takes. I want to watch the product, not people talking about the product.

With that in mind, I just deleted the espn.com page. Can someone recommend a streamlined results portal where I can get score updates not muddied up with the "top 50 point guard" or "Stephen smith takes on Lavar" sort of content? Tsn.ca seems decent.

Made the switch to cbssports.com a couple of years ago and can't really complain about anything they do.

Cbssports.com guy here. I think it's excellent and not too cluttered and it is also very easy to navigate. I dropped ESPN a decade ago and everytime I go back, I remember why I left. I visited that site multiple times a day in 2004 and was even an insider and they forced me to change because it was so cluttered and horrendous.

Today at the WH briefing SHS called for ESPN to fire Hill.
RSBN TV‏Verified account @RSBNetwork
White House: @espn host @jemelehill's comments about President Trump being racist a 'fireable offense'.
Except that Trump is a confirmed racist. Just like his daddy was a KKK member. She should be punished because she like Schilling broke the rules set forth by ESPN about media use. So she isn't wrong but if you want to put policies in place to stop people from posting controversial stuff on twitter you need to treat people accordingly. I'm ashamed of the 2004 and 2007 titles because Schilling and Papelbon are Trump supporters. So I actually don't have a problem with Hill telling the truth except for all republicans being racist of course. That's not true. A lot are just misguided and don't have the correct opinion. Stuck in 1910. Progress people. Progress.

Hill should be fired because she isn't very good at her job. I feel like now the narrative for this will be that people don't like Hill because she was anti-Trump. That may be true for some; but it will overshadow the fact that most people that dislike Hill don't like her because she sucks. It's funny, Bryan Curtis had a curiously timed feature on Hill today in the Ringer about how Hill is taking backlash for bringing liberal politics to ESPN and that is why there has been so much negativity towards "The 6." I definitely think there are people out there that don't want to see a black woman talk about social issues on their sports broadcasts; but I also think the show isn't doing very well because it sucks for many separate reasons.

At the risk of being redundant, ESPN's greatest offense here is making me defend Jemele Hill, who has been one of the more consistently lousy presences on their network for a long time.

The tepid Republican leadership response to Trump's UVA debacle left the Republican reps by and large open to such criticism. Extending it beyond that is too far, but I can imagine women and minorities watching the overall response to the incident lashing out in such a way.

Either way, this certainly shouldn't be on the radar of the freaking president, let alone one who has used Twitter repeatedly for years to trash people.

Did not know whether the show was doing well or poorly; like others, I am a live event only with ESPN and have been for some time.

But she is dead. Not now -- the network cannot be seen to succumb to pressure from Trump, and it has already decided that a very mild sanction is the way to go. But she is dead because she emblematic of the politization of everything and has demonstrated she cannot be trusted.

You can't be in the business of alienating people, especially when you are struggling.

Are you ashamed of the 2013 team as well? I would not be surprised if at least a few of the members of the team such as John Lackey, Will Middlebrooks were Trumpeteer's as well. In fact there are a holes jerks, racists and sexists on every team. If you are concerned about an athlete's political beliefs you are going to go crazy. Even Yaz was one of Tom Yawkey's closest buddies. Very few athletes are worthy of our respect outside the arena such as Mohhumad Ali, Bill Bradley or Colin Kapernick. My advice is to root for the laundry.

I was responding to Tyrone Biggums' quote, perhaps he was being sarcastic? She can say whatever she wants about the President but when she falls into the "all Republicans are this or that" trap she loses me, so ridiculous to paint all with the same brush when that's exactly what you're pissdd at others for doing.

Oh please, he miscalculated in a major way and is now sniveling "I won't do it anymore, promise!" way to have a backbone Kap.
The dude has given $1M in straight cash to charities that support related causes. Give me a fucking break with this. He's raised more awareness for this issue than any athlete in recent memory and has paid the price by getting blackballed out of his profession by old rich white guys.

Tyrone you did not respond to my question. Are you sickened and embarrassed by the 2013 team as well? There were Trumpeteer's and racists on that team as well. There is no team in the history of sports with the possible exception of the 1936 US Olympic Team made up entirely of saints. Just root for the laundry and not the athlete.

He redid his contract with the 49ers so that he could become a free agent because he believed he would be signed somewhere else. That is the definition of a miscalculation. That doesn't mean that he hasn't donated his own money or that he hasn't raised awareness, but I doubt he expected that his NFL career was over.

Ah, I missed where TB said that in his original post. I don't think she said anything like "all republicans are racist". The closest I found was this:

Jemele Hill @jemelehill

Replying to @DonnyParlock and 2 others
And while you can certainly criticize black ppl for supporting Dems, the other side has done nothing but endorse/promote white supremacy

Not as much as the Schilling teams. Anyone who supports 45 needs to have their heads checked. I will never acknowledge him as my president. Period. He's a racist pig. HRC is the rightful president.

I understand and respect your opinion but at the same time can you root for a team knowing it's representing your city and has people like Schilling? In good conscience? It's why I stopped watching the NFL this season and won't until Kap is unblackballed. I'm actually disappointed the Pats didn't at least look at him as a possible Brady successor. I get it but I'm not surprised since all 32 owners are on the same page.

Looking at his stats from last year and some of the QBs around the league, he's being blackballed plain as day. I guess he miscalculated to some extent, but only in that the owners around the league value certain... things (cough)... over winning football games. I mean, these are the same people that are willing to sign people who beat up their wives/girlfriends in order to win games.

The owners are afraid of the fans. They brought up Kaep's name on WFAN a few times earlier this summer and people called in and went nuts. It was mostly in response to the cops/pigs socks not so much the anthem protest.

I mean, his jersey is still selling in the top-50 and he isn't even employed. There's still a pretty big fan base that supports him too. The day the patriots start making decisions based on callers to K&C... Oomph.

Ray Lewis seems to believe the Ravens were going to sign Kaepernick... until Kaepernick's girlfriend sent out a racist tweet

I don't know why this isn't brought up more. 10 players protested in one way or another last year. 9 of them are playing this season. The one guy that isn't also:

1. Wore the police pig socks.
2. Sent a tweet comparing modern day police to slave catchers.
3. Praised Castro and told Cuban Americans (paraphrasing), "Sure Castro broke up families but hey, the police and justice system do the same in the US." Try making that argument to older Cubans in this country.
4. Has a girlfriend who compared Ray Lewis to a house slave and Steve Bisciotti to a slave owner.
5. Refused to vote because it would be showing support for a "system of oppression".
6. Kinda stinks at his job.

Personally, I don't give a shit if he stands for the anthem or not. But let's not pretend that his protest is the same as safety Eric Reid or some other player who has also been kneeling. Whether you're pro or anti Kaepernick, everyone should acknowledge that his actions have been far more polarizing than what other players have done.

Edit - For the record, I love what the Bennett brothers and Doug Baldwin have been doing to raise awareness about an important cause. But I gotta say, I'm not a big fan of how CK has done things.
