Miami (oh, Miami!)
Listening this AM. Good job all around on #7.

What do you think will happen with your recording schedule? I'd love to hear you guys do a weekly recap, and/or use such a recap to track a particular issue or two across the season. I think Podcasts are the perfect medium for that.

Thank you for listening and for the feedback!

We are trying to do this once a week with episodes going live Monday mornings. Next week may be an exception, though, as I'm traveling from Tuesday night through next Tuesday night for the Easter holiday. (Bringing my six month old son up to Connecticut to meet a bunch of family and friends)

And while I don't know about dedicating a segment every single week to a single topic, the idea of checking in periodically on something over the course of the season is a nice idea. We will certainly discuss it and see if we can come up with something.

Thanks again!

Episode 9 is up.

This week we talk about Chris Sale‘s insanely low run support, Pedro Martinez‘s take on Dustin Pedroia, Matt Barnes and Manny Machado, Eric Thames and his video game production, the feckless Toronto Blue Jays, and pick our next units (bullpens) before wrapping up with a quick discussion on Michael Chavis and Josh Ockimey both coming out of the gate on fire.

Great job, again. Only criticism is that the sound levels are too low.
It seems to be on par with the other baseball podcasts I listen to. Interesting.

And we've set up an email address for people to submit questions or comments to. If you want to share a thought, suggest a segment, or ask a question you can send it to SoSHCast@gmail.com and will do our best to address it on the air.

Thanks, as always, for the support!

I usually listen to this sandwiched somewhere in between Rogan, Maron and Simmons. This last episode I had to crank the volume way up on my iPhone when it started and turn it back down when the next podcast started. I don't think it's an issue on my end, but it's possible.

I noticed it on this last episode as well, and I don't recall it happening before.

After a one-week break due to the holiday weekend, we're back with Episode 13. We discuss the EdRod injury, the "company" that Deven Marrero's multi-HR game puts him in (offering the rare opportunity for a Cesar Crespo name-drop), the Mike Trout injury, and the potential of a Rafael Devers call-up. As always, feel free to send comments to us either here or through SoSHCast@gmail.com.

(Also, we think we may have fixed the low-audio issue. Let us know.)

I'm in the process of editing episode 20 and one of the things I have to do every week is cut my audio when Justin is peaking since Audacity picks up a slightly delayed and echo-y bit of Justin's mic at a really low level. It creates a distortion effect if I leave my background audio in there. It's usually not an issue as I almost always turn off my AC before recording, but this week it was imply too hot to do so, especially since my infant son was taking a nap and elevated temperatures (as in getting up into mid to high 80's) isn't recommended while they're sleeping, heh. So ever time I'm cutting my audio, there's a noticeable difference in the background noise.

The issue is one that is persistent with Audacity and I haven't found a fix for it. And while I can live with it most weeks when my AC can be turned off, it would be nice to cut back on my editing time by not having to drop my track every time Justin talks.

So does anyone have any suggestions for a recording program that won't pick up on Justin's audio at all? Something free or relatively inexpensive (20-30 bucks or so?) that I can try instead of Audacity next week?

Thanks in advance.

Also, we stopped bumping this because we weren't getting much interaction and didn't want it to turn into a spam thread. We figure most of the people who were in the thread have subscribed and get updates on new episodes when we post them.

Is it an actual routing issue bringing Justin's audio into your track somehow, or is it something more physical like your mic picking him up off your headphones?

Re: Noise problems, you're correct in identifying noise dropouts as an issue. Normal room tone on its own isn't really a huge problem though; we're all used to hearing ACs and the like pretty constantly, and our brains are really good at running them out as long as they aren't getting in the way of comprehension. Having a loud AC drop in and out is far more distracting. What you want to do in these cases is actually record a minute or so of just the room tone with no talking, so you can paste it (crossfaded) into the gaps you're chopping out so it's smooth and consistent. There are de-noising plug-ins you can use that can "learn" the noise and lessen it, but they can make the dialog pretty squirrely if you overdo it, so you definitely want to use a light touch and err on the side of a "natural" sound.

For other software options, there's always Reaper which is free, but I find it really odd that it would be audacity introducing your feedback issues.

Yeah, I usually have a 30 second clip of room tone I can pull form when I need to but I was in a rush yesterday and forgot. And since the echo in Justin's voice is far more of a problem than my room tone cutting in and out, I'm going to have to live with it this week. My goal is to not have to drop my audio for anything more than coughing or bumping the table or other momentary noise blips, though, so needing to drop room tone in that often is a step in the opposite direction.

As for Audacity, it's not picking up through the headphones, I don't think. I have separate USB mic I record with and then use headphones with a standard 3.5mm plug. I suppose the mic could be sensitive enough to pick up on the sound, but most of the forums I see discussing it suggest a link between Audacity and Skype of some kind as the cause. So I wanted to try a couple of free or cheap programs (with free trials, hopefully) until I found one that didn't pick up on Justin's audio like that.

I'll give Reaper a try. Thanks.

We had a planned break two weekends ago, and I had to travel unexpectedly at the last second this past weekend. We are going to be recording again on Saturday.

Yeah, agreed. It's hard to say for sure without seeing the whole setup, but it would be surprising if the problem, whatever it is, didn't crop up pretty much the same way in any other mixing/editing app.

BTW, Reaper isn't technically free last time I checked, but it's honor system licensing and the cost is just $60 if you're not using it in a commercial setting making >$20K a year. I use a different DAW (Digital Performer), but I've played around with Reaper and it's very solid, full-featured software and seems stable. They also have a great user community.

You guys are doing a good job, keep it up! I've been editing a podcast for my NGO employer since the beginning of the year, so I've become really interested in the technical challenges. I used Serial as a benchmark for level-setting. They seem to keep RMS levels in the -24 to -15 range most of the time, centered around -18, so that's the target I aim for.

Yeah, I make sure my background noise/room tone is virtually non-existent so that Justin's can carry that, then manually drop my audio every time I'm not speaking to keep the echos out of the exported audio. It's functional, but not as quick a process as I'd like.

I'm going to try setting up a two machine system at some point where I'm recording my local audio on a different computer than the one that the Skype call is running on. Just need the time to actually test it out before a recording day.

As always, thank you for listening and thank you for the input!

Episode 22 is up. There will be a dot com post with the link up in the morning, but I figured some people might want to kill some time this afternoon listening to it, so here's the soundcloud link, or you can find it with your favorite podcast app.

As always, we appreciate the streams/downloads and we encourage you to send us questions or to leave comments. Have a great rest of the weekend!

There isn't an episode recorded for this week because we have been working out a merger of sorts. We are rolling SoSHCast into Sports & Sorts. I've been doing a twice a month appearance on a Friday half hour show for a little while and since we were overlapping a bit with content already, and Justin had to step away with his twins due next month, it made sense to consolidate efforts.

I will be updating the thread with the new rss feed and will link to the new show page from all of the places where SoSHCast gets posted/mentioned to make it as easy as possible for people who want to keep listening to do so.

We are so very grateful for the support we have gotten here and on the various social media platforms. It's been enormously fun to run out the show in its former format, but I'm really excited about where the future will take us.

The new show will be a mix of Sox and Yanks perspectives instead of both hosts being from the Sox side, and may have a little more general MLB discussion than we tended to have. I'll still work in a healthy amount of prospect talk, and will endeavor to do draft and IFA signing period coverage like I did this past year in future seasons.

There is also a longer Tuesday morning show that my co-host does with another guy which is more Yankees focused on the baseball end, and covers all the major sports plus occasional PGA and tennis talk for anyone interested. There will be a mention of my name and a link to www.sonsofsamhorn.com in the description of every episode I take part in, so they'll be easy to spot.

So thank you again for making the last five months possible. If anyone has any questions or thoughts, I'm happy to discuss.

The first official episode since we rolled SoSHCast into Sports & Sorts was recorded tonight. It will be uploaded some time tomorrow. Here's the RSS feed for the show (I'll add it to the OP as well): http://sportsandsorts.libsyn.com/rss

I plugged Ian York's recent article about Mookie during the episode and a link to it will be part of the episode's description. You can find it here: http://sonsofsamhorn.com/baseball/hitting/hitting-visual-analysis/mookie-betts-hitting-2017/

We talked about the banner briefly, the Indians' run, Joe Girardi's quick hook, Mookie's offense this year, David Price returning as a reliever and had a bit of general division banter. These usually go up around lunch time so be on the lookout for it and let me know what you think!

Just listened to it as I did my AM work, very good job man!!
Did you listen to the episode from 8/31/17? That was sort of our test run with the current format and is what led me to explore combining our efforts. Last night's episode will probably be uploaded around lunch today.

The 8/31 episode was fun, though. We had the Sox and Yanks about to square up and that was right after the Justin Upton trade.

Is Sports & Sorts not available on Stitcher? I've searched but I can't find it.

Okay, so apparently Stitcher is really specific about search criteria. Search like this: "Sports & Sorts With Shane & The Bri Man" without the quotes. Make sure to use the ampersands and not the word "and" in either spot. Otherwise it won't show up.

The show won't be at the top of the list, but if you scroll down a bit it'll be there. Let me know if you have any more trouble.

New Episode out!

We talk Alex Cora, the departures of Brian Butterfield and Chili Davis. There's some Joe Girardi talk along with Shane's dream team for a new manager and coaches. Plus, we touch on Pedroia's surgery and what that might mean for the winter.

The Sports & Sorts Sox/Yanks combo show will be firing back up near the end of spring training. I'll be sure to bump this thread with a link when it does
